The Louisiana Supreme Court disbarred New Orleans attorney Ashton O'Dwyer. Mr. O'Dwyer was a favorite target, I mean topic, over at NMC's blog when he was still alive. JJ would be remiss in not honoring NMC by posting this decision. It's rather entertaining but then again, the subject is Ashton O'Dwyer. An online food fight has developed over Bill Minor's legacy. The noted journalist and columnist died earlier this week at the age of 94. Accolades were thrown his way as many honored him. The Clarion-Ledger's Jerry Mitchell called him a "model of journalism" and remembered his life:

Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason responded to a sexual harassment lawsuit in U.S. District Court on March 2. Former Hinds County Chief Deputy Cheryl Matory and Lieutenant Tomeca Barnes sued the Sheriff Victor in U.S. District Court in January. The lawsuit contained quite a few salacious details.

Senator Harkins stands up to the good ole boys or.... The A.G. strikes out.
State Senator Josh Harkins just taught Jim Hood and the Mayor of Bay St. Louis that the old proverb "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" is still true. The Attorney General and controversial Mayor teamed up to gut a "good government" Harkins bill that was passed by the legislature a year ago. The bill banned cities from paying the salaries of all interim municipal appointments after six months. It would fix the problem of Mayors tagging their appointments as "interim" so they could avoid confirmation votes. However, Mayor Les Fillingame went whining to the A.G. and Mr. Hood was more than happy to help him. Their shenanigans did not go unnoticed and Senator Harkins got a stronger bill passed and signed into law this week that put the two officials in their place.

It is becoming too much of a familiar story in Hinds County. Hoodlum
commits crime. Police does its job and catches him. Hoodlum stays in
prison for a year or two. He gets back out on the street and terrorizes
the community some more until he is locked up again. The case of Denarious Watts is
one of the better examples of the Hinds County Catch & Release

Bad boyz, bad boyz......
The Mississippi Department of Corrections, Madison Police Department, and Jackson Police Department issued the following press releases and pictures. It was a busy day on the crime-fighting front so they were combined into one post.
Will Vidal Sullivan's probation get revoked?
Vidal Sullivan was on probation when he was arrested and indicted for armed robbery. He was convicted of aggravated assault in 2006 and sentenced to serve ten years in prison. However, he was released from prison on November 15, 2012 to serve probation for three years. However, Sullivan stopped reporting to his probation officer, thus "stopping the clock" on his probation sentence. He has approximately four years of his prison sentence to serve if his probation is revoked.

Beer sales coming to Tiger Stadium
Funny how economics changes things. LSU is "working aggressively" to bring beer sales to Death Valley. The Baton Rouge Business Report reported today:
TIGER projects cost was always over $35 million.
The TIGER grant projects will cost $38.5 million and thus eat up nearly half of a proposed $80 million loan. The grant will fund a desperately needed improvement for North State Street from Sheppard to Hartfield. However, the grant will also fund the extension of West County Line Road from its current east end to North State Street. The extension will cross a railroad so the grant will also pay for the construction of an overpass for the railroad line. Jackson officials cite the cost of these two projects as the main reason for borrowing $90 million against the 1% sales tax revenue. Some officials claimed the cost of the projects doubled but the original grant applications say otherwise.

Mayor's lawsuit dismissed.
The court fight between Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber and his former executive assistant took another turn last week. U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan, III threw out Mayor Yarber's lawsuit against Kimberly Bracey. Mrs. Bracey sued the Mayor and city of Jackson in August and made several salacious allegations.

The Gutter Punks
The Gutter Punks of New Orleans. They look so homeless as well as disgusting. It seems more and more of them are popping up like mushrooms. They sprawl out on the sidewalks with their dogs, look and smell as if they haven't had a shower in weeks, and beg for money. A homeless crisis of sorts, right? Guess again. They are called Gutter Punks for a reason because they are anything but homeless. It's an adventure for many of them. Check out this picture taken in front of a French Quarter hotel:
Vidal Sullivan is back in jail.
One of Frank's favorites is back in jail. A Hinds County grand jury indicted Vidal Sullivan for armed robbery and felon in possession of a firearm in on February 23. His bond was set at $300,000. The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Jeff Weill.

Kidnapping a judge is never a good idea. Attorney General Jim Hood issued the following statement:

J.C. Penney announced it will close five stores in Mississippi communities – Columbus, Corinth, Greenville, Meridian, and Oxford. Some good ole boy politicking apparently took place when the Stonebridge Public Improvement District was created. The Brandon Board of Aldermen voted to approve the creation of the district. However, one of the Aldermen voted to approve the creation of the PID even though he worked for the developer of the PID. Earlier post on bond default.

Carlos Moore & McDonald's mother change story.
Attorney Carlos Moore and his client, Yvette Mason-Sherman, altered some key facts in the lawsuit they filed against Wayne Parish in Hinds County Circuit Court. Mason-Sherman sued Wayne Parish, his business partner Jimmy Ratcliff, and Performance Oil for wrongful death in the death of her son. Parish shot and killed 17 year-old Charles McDonald, Jr. during a struggle over a gun at Performance Oil on McDowell Road on July 21, 2016. A Hinds County grand jury indicted him for first degree murder in October. He is free on a $50,000 bond.

The media was all agog over the arrest of 1998 Mississippi Melinda King Sanders. One must forgive them as they tend to go rabid when they think they see a pageant queen fallen from grace. Sanders was arrested on March 2 for credit card fraud. The media had a field day reporting the arrest and posting the mug shot. The arrest generated no small amount of interest on social media as well. However, part of the ordeal ended for Sanders when the charges were dismissed yesterday in Flora Municipal Court. However, as Paul Harvey would say, there is a Rest of the story.

Hambrick killer tries to blame victim.
More details about the murder of Eric Hambrick emerged last week when a transcript of his killer's sentencing was released. Arkel Coleman pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November after he was indicted for first degree murder in Hambrick's death. Hambrick was a MEMA employee and a fixture in the Mississippi Opera and First Baptist Church choir. Coleman claimed that Hambrick asked him to trade sex for money. He said he hit him in response to the alleged proposition.

The Stonebridge public improvement district defaulted on $22 million in special assessment bonds that were sold in 2007. Stonebridge opened to much hoopla in 2008 right before The meltdown began. The Mississippi Business Journal reported in May 2008:

Partying with The Chief
Hinds County thief Lashaun Hudson is apparently having a good ole time in the Marshall County Correctional Facility. Hudson was convicted in 2014 of several counts of burglary larceny of an unoccupied dwelling and receiving stolen property. However, Hudson is living it up in jail as he smokes dope, sells dope, and is about to get out on parole. See for yourself.

Mississippi Secretary of State Dibbit Hosemann issued the following press release.
Rudy sues CMU for $6.3 million.
Madison County Engineer Rudy Warnock sued Canton Municipal Utilities for $6.3 million in U.S. District Court on March 9. Mr. Warnock claims that CMU breached three contracts it entered into with him in 2016. CMU hired Mr. Warnock as its sole engineer in August but terminated him a few months later.
Judge Green curseth the Blessed
Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green sent Blessed Adams back to prison last Thursday. Ridgeland police arrested him in January for strong-armed robbery, possession of marijuana, failure to yield to the police, and simple assault after he maced a clerk and then stole money from Old Canton Liquor and Wine. Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal called him a "serial robber".

Wingate whalloped.
Lawyers have complained for years that U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate's docket moved slowly- if at all at times. Such tardiness caught up with Judge Wingate as the Chief U.S. District Judge prohibited Judge Wingate from accepting new cases until his caseload is in order. The order is posted below.
