What is Oxford’s fascination with throwing beer all over themselves at sporting events? It started a few years ago with their make believe baseball “tradition” and now all over their beloved oak trees during football season. All this upper class talk to smell like fermented grains all day.
Yes, this ritual behavior is completely ridiculous. But, believe it or not - many of these boys become men through their affiliation with those greek organizations that function as surrogate families with freedom from authority during the young adult reach for independence. When too much alcohol leads to injuries, of course it's preventable, and regrettable.
What's truly ridiculous however, is that many of these young men will perpetuate the cult of arrogance that permeates Oxford. Many women see right through it (after getting used/hurt) and run the opposite direction. Others run towards the douchebags because of their daddy's money, etc. - then get used/hurt, and run away later.
11:25, I’m unaware of any fraternities when I was in one in the late 70s that would punish that behavior. Just drunk boys being drunk boys - the headache and muddy ripped blazer would have been their punishment the next day.
Gotta love it when a Dawg like 12:52 tries to psychoanalyze UM students. I’m guessing during rush 12:52 was stuck in the parlor with Sidney, Jugdish, Mohammed, and Clayton.
12:52 may not see the risk of frat alcohol, but I know it. My son had to quit college and spend months in rehab. Yes he took responsibility for bad decisions but the enabling was thickly pervasive in that frat atmosphere. He has been sober ten+ years but I resent his ever being in a frat.
@ " believe it or not - many of these boys become men through their affiliation with those greek organizations that function as surrogate families with freedom from authority during the young adult reach for independence."
Good to see the future top tier MS men engaging in this behavior. The left isn’t going to like this batch of future leaders. Beautiful. Hey guys, the future looks damn bright!
I would expect this type of behavior from MSU fraternities but not so much at Ole Miss. I seriously regret being in a fraternity. I have had 4 fraternity brothers that drank themselves to death and that’s just ones I know about. I am sure there are others.
Nobody who uses the word frat was in a fraternity. That said kids these days are different than 1980s and 1990s. They don’t drink and they seem to all be fitness models. Maybe if they would congregate some and dance a little maybe they’d feel better about life? I don’t know. I had a good time and made good friends to this day.
A couple of points: 1. Drunken college guys doing things that pretty well represent what drunk kids do, i.e, stupid and silly shit, is not new or news. 2. I was in a fraternity and some drank to excess, a small number didn't drink much if at all, and most drank about like average kids of the same age, college or not. Today, most are a pretty typical example of a cohort of young men, again college or not. Some did well, most did OK, and some flamed out in various ways and to various degrees (pardon the pun). My wife, who was in a sorority, has the same general view.
There's a reason for the above: college kids, Greeks or otherwise, as a large cohort of society as a whole are a cross-section of society, so it is not new or news that they more or less mirror society as whole. Would we as parents encourage our kids, boys and girls, to join fraternities or sororities? Yes, we would and did. They turned out fine and are glad for the experiences and ties, as are we. Is it right for every kid? Nope. Are there problems? Yep. Such is life.
It’s easy to blame fraternities (I was in one, they’re not “frats”) for excessive drinking, but when you put 18-year old boys in a situation with other 18-year old boys, and no parental supervision for the first time in their lives, some will find some shit to get into. The independents in my dorm at Ole Miss were the wildest hooligans on campus, and many were into hard drugs, which was very much frowned on in most fraternities. Not being a formally organized group, however, the collective misbehavior of the boys in my dorm would never be as easy and convenient to be scrutinized or condemned by others as a fraternity would.
I'm sure all of the critics never heard of The Dutch Bar here in Jackson. None of you know which MS GOP leaders were in fraternities, and which were in the White Citizens Council. Grow up people. Indeed, too few parents knew then or know now what their sweet Janes and Johnnies do when they are at their own parties! Pots calling out the Kettles!
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything). Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up. In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production. Note: Security provided by INS.
Trollfest '07
Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both will entitle you to free drinks.Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required, just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '07 is for EVERYONE!!!

You know they have to keep all the trailer Parker activities hidden… they just want to talk about the hood
Wonder how their heads are feeling this morning?

A beer soaked frat TeaSip keeps flies off the coeds?
Back in the day, if any pledges acted like that in public there would be serious consequences from the actives.
What an embarrassment.
lol—11:25, I seriously doubt that. And most of those guys don’t look like pledges.
Old times there are not forgotten by the overfed rich fraternity boys.
Sorry but all I see is young men being actual men. Y’all are so soft.
All you commenters grow up. Just good ol' drunken college fun.

Compared to "back in the day".....this was mild soy boi.
That 98 percent acceptance rate…….

Gotta love it when a Dawg like 12:52 tries to psychoanalyze UM students. I’m guessing during rush 12:52 was stuck in the parlor with Sidney, Jugdish, Mohammed, and Clayton.

11:39/12:52(2): I was actually a fraternity pledge, and then an active, at Ole Miss “back in the day.”
So I actually have an idea what I’m talking about.
Can you say the same?
Anyone who uses the term “soy boi” was never in a fraternity, and has probably never touched a girl.
@ " believe it or not - many of these boys become men through their affiliation with those greek organizations that function as surrogate families with freedom from authority during the young adult reach for independence."
Nope. Don't believe it.
1:27, Let me guess. You went to college in Starkville.
Nope, 5:15, just a little north of Starkville.
Reading these comments leads me to one simple conclusion. “You’re all worthless and weak! Now drop and give me twenty.”
Hell yeah boys!!!!!! I, for one, have hope for this generation of young men! HYDR!
Starkville college low T goofs and the massive butthurt is telling. It’s ok, little buddies, this is actually a good thing and should be encouraged.
Wtf is soyboi

Future Mississippi lawyers and politicians learning how to screw over the good taxpaying people of Mississippi. Same at MS State and JSU.

I've had stomach cramps that I enjoyed more than I would enjoy that.

You should have seen what happened to a frat brother who got engaged to a sorority girl. Where are those videos?
Imagine getting butt hurt over someone calling a fraternity a frat.
Not Oxford , thought they were so perfect !!
Over dressed drunks in Oxford. Something new here ?

I doubt these guys care what lonely old men have to say about them.
9:12, The White Citizens Council was a shameful response to Brown v. Board of Education in 1955.
But by citing them you seem to completely disregard the last 50 years of progress.
I got $20 that The University Grays of old would whip the pants off these UM students of today
