Kiffin Apologizes

It appears Lane Kiffin is walking back some of his comments about Ole Miss.  Blake Levine reported:

Why are we paying attention this asshole?

Where is the apology? This is the classic "I'm sorry you're mad" non-apology.

Anonymous said...

If you are explaining, you are losing.

Anonymous said...

Kiffin apologizes? What apology?

Anonymous said...

He needs to stay in his lane.

No do-overs. Words mean things and they stay on the web forever.

One year ago, Ole Miss fan was telling everyone who would listen that Kiffin LOVED Mississippi, his kids are all settled into Oxford, Kiffin is now sober and a fine Christian man, blah, blah, blah.

As a State fan I can confidently say .........stfu Lane. I warned my Ole Miss friends about their happiness when they hired this pile of cat crap.

Take it from a coach, what Kiffin said about recruiting is absolutely true. While there are many prejudices in south Louisiana . It’s a much more safe from the everything is racial life in Mississippi and people feel that freedom in Baton Rouge.

Anonymous said...

Lane just confirmed facts. Recruiters use Ole Miss history against them all the time.

12:44 PM, stop lying. I've been to Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas.

No apology needed Kiffin...

Anonymous said...

Lane must not know that Mississippians proudly wears racism like a badge of honor!

@12:44
Right - Baton Rouge is an friendly crime- free oasis in the midst of land surrounded by racial strife and turmoil.

As a present head coach of a major university, I will say that Kiffin is afraid to shake hands. He's one weird dude.

Anonymous said...

Texas can't shake it's cowboy image. Tennessee can't shake it's country hillbilly image. Louisiana is the French cajun creole gumbo haven. They don't try to shake their national images which have deep cultural roots. It's damn hypocritical for the Ole Miss Rebels to think they can be Ole Miss and somehow shake the well earned national image. Lane only responded like all non-residents of the Magnolia State would when asked. Ole Miss no longer pays him so why lie?

Anonymous said...

Ridiculous. If Kiffen had stayed they would love his dirty underwear.

My grandfather coached football at ole Miss, and he played a large role in recruiting potential players. The then-current flag and mascot absolutely made out of state parents fearful that the state’s history and general social attitudes had not changed since the 50’s. And many of them wouldn’t let their kids play at Ole Miss, fearful that they would be treated like a second class citizen in this state (or worse).

Yes, the image is an obstacle for ole Miss football recruiting. Yall claim that yall like it when people “tell it how it is.” Well, all Kiffin did was tell it how it is—and now yall are mad. Fascinating.

Anonymous said...

Is Lane pretending like St. George, Louisiana doesn’t exist? Feel a little gross stooping to this level.

Anonymous said...

Kiffin is too funny.

This "hot yoga" man-child will do/say anything to get the spotlight back on HIM ... even if it's for two minutes of coverage in a women's magazine.

As has been said, his split with LSU is inevitable within the next few years. That will be his final and most drama filled middle school lil' girl break up.

And yeah, I'll give him credit ... he's a great coach and worked wonders for Ole Miss.

But I predict LSU is his last D-1 gig as a Head Coach.

Anonymous said...

Yea, sure we do. Maybe you see life through a racial lens. Most of us live our lives without ever thinking about race. It must be hard to be you.

Anonymous said...

2:01 It's certainly not true that those black football players are treated like 2nd class citizens at Ole Miss. On the contrary they are treated above 1st class. Well paid. It's the other blacks who aren't athletes that are treated like 3rd class. It's pretty common knowledge.

Anonymous said...

2:01,

And what decade did your grandfather coach?

Anonymous said...

Baton Rouge is Jackson if Mississippi State University were in Jackson. The only reason it has held on is because the college is there.

Anonymous said...

Earlier, yes, but Ole Miss's recruiting is fine now, as is Ole Miss in general. Look at its success. Ole Miss's athletic opponents may wish Kiffin's comments were still true, but coaches at other schools know Kiffin is merely trying to stir the pot to help LSU.
Rent free, Lane. Rent free.

OM fans were all talking about Kiffin's rediscovered faith back when they hired him. Basically, the fans *wanted* to believe it. Happens all the time, schools make a (supposedly) winning hire and the fanbase falls all over itself explaining why the new coach is the human embodiment of all heavenly virtue. And, of course, it's never true, no matter the coach and no matter the school.

I remember talking to a couple of OM alums at a church Christmas event right after Kiffin was hired, and they were sharing all the "insider knowledge" about the coach's faith journey and how he was quietly leading Bible studies for players in Florida. I told them they were pouring it on a little thick, and that I wondered if anyone really knew where the man stood on anything. One of them replied that "as the Good Book says, by his fruits we shall know him."

And I guess we do, now.

Lane may very well be a great football coach, but first and foremost he is the NCAA's biggest shit stirrer. And I am a MS State fan.

Anonymous said...

Finebaum said he was around Kiffin on multiple occasions and repeatedly heard him bitch about the Ole Miss administration -- but it was NEVER about race, NEVER about the flag, and ALWAYS about money for players and the program. Politicians like Gunn rolled the flag into the narrative to get it changed. You think 17 or 18-year-olds, or their grandparents, give two shits about a flag? They're worried about scratchin the new rims on that new ride some booster just bought. I hope LSU gets the hell beat out of them all year -- and not because of Kiffin -- just because they're LSU.

Anonymous said...

3:11–the 90’s. Why is the decade all that relevant when there’s enough there for coaches to still be saying it today.

Anonymous said...

That doesn’t take away from the point. The point is that this state, including Ole Miss, has a perception issue (based on very real stuff from our past), and that perception issue is dulling our recruitment abilities.

The fact that the players may or may not be paid well doesn’t negate that point

Anonymous said...

Who cares what some "black out of state parents and grandparents" think anyway. As long as their sons and grandsons say "show me the money!" all that 1960's stuff is irrelevant anyway. Lane knows that and he sounds stupid talking about it.

Krusatyr said...

Hundreds of young MS Confederate Rebels, Civil War dead, are buried on Campus in a mass grave on a hill top overlooking the track field. Most never owned slaves and fought for MS. Not for slavery. These 750 casualties of the 1862 Battle of Shiloh were patriotic to their state and their families. Ole Miss need never apologize for their namesake boys who gave their lives valiantly for this state.

Kiffin is an autistic degenerate who makes inappropriate Tik Tok with his daughter. Other than that he’s a great guy.

So true ... and this Gunn character will never be "Guv'nah of Miss'sipy.

I think Lane will lead the Tigers to many victories, maybe even a SEC Championship, but I can't see him winning a second round championship playoff game.

Kiffin is doing a great job of digging his own grave.

I predict his "fall from grace" won't be on the field ... but from a salacious situation with a cute lil' LSU coed.

Kiffin just hasn’t had a reason to be the center of attention recently and needed some controversy to keep the talking heads saying his name for his ego…. Lol

Anonymous said...

Coach Kiffin is not wrong. Old Miss is a bastion of the Confederacy.

I don’t mind that. But it’s true.

So don’t get your feelings hurt when it speaks the truth.

Hotty Toddy!

What an attention whore.

One of the earliest slave auctions in America was in NYC continuously from 1600s under Dutch rule up to 1762 under the English, who operated the auction at the corner of Wall St and Water St.
The animosity against MS and it's symbols had nothing to do with Ole Miss during the Civil War. It was directed at the White groups who formed all over the South, including MS, to oppose and resist the Northern tyranny of Reconstruction and later groups all across the country (incl Colorado) refusal of Jim Crow Whites to accept the mandates of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 (passed by GOP, signed by Eisenhower) and subsequent terrorism and atrocities of the Klan, highlighted in "MS Burning".

Well now, Lane Kiffin may be stirring the pot, but he did not exactly invent Ole Miss's history.

A lot of folks are carrying on like he insulted their mama, when all he really did was say out loud what the rest of the country already thinks when they hear "Mississippi."

And watching some Ole Miss supporters bend over backward to pretend that Confederate flags, Colonel Rebel, and all that old baggage never shaped the school's image is something to behold.

You can call Kiffin a hypocrite, and you would not be wrong. But if one offhand comment can rattle this many people, maybe the issue is bigger than one football coach running his mouth.

Sometimes the truth stings worse than a yellow jacket under a lawn chair.

Too little, too late. Reminds me of the Steve Kiner "Archie Who?" affair (1969). Would love to write Golding's pregame pep talk before the LSU game this year.

Yup. Sarkisian, in comments picked up by On3, leaned into the tired and predictable angle questioning the school’s academics in the context of recruiting.

The "tired an predictable angle" of race and low academic expectations in Oxford are not "angles"....they are fact, and still going strong.

I don’t look to Kiffin as a life coach, but I don’t shake hands either. It’s a filthy custom.

If 99% of the world believed that McDonald's served spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, and beer, it wouldn't matter that it does not. Like so many other things, what potential customers believe (and tell themselves) counts. When there are NO facts to support a mistaken belief and, for example, it is easy to show that McDonald's does not serve any of that and never has, a fair number of that 99% can easily be swayed into believing something closer to the truth. But when there are at least some facts to support a not-entirely-incorrect view, and Ole Miss and Mississippi do have a history of racism, the best that can be done is to show things are changing. That's only a possibility if both are actually changing and changing in meaningful ways at a meaningful rate. The only opinions that matter as to "meaningful" are the opinions of those outsiders who the insiders are seeking to change. In this case, it does not matter in the least what Ole Miss boosters think and tell themselves, it only matters what those they seek to recruit think and tell each other. "Right" and "wrong" do not enter into that discussion.

That said, Kiffin was and is a scumbag, before OM, at OM, and now, at LSU. For the time being, he and his scumbaggery are LSU's problem. I suspect that if he falls out of favor there, he's probably finished as a big-bucks coach. None of that, however, matters as to Ole Miss's and Mississippi's image problem.

Anonymous said...

It is obvious to recruits and their families that Oxford and Baton Rouge are totally different environments. Both are technically small towns but Baton Rouge is surrounded by a very urban area. Oxford is not. I suspect that and travel time for families, makes a difference to some recruits and their families.

If you admire Lane Kiffin, that means you never met him. As they say the dude just ain’t right.

Kiffin's latest apology: "I'm sorry that I'm sorry."

Interested reader. said...

Coach 12:44.... How bout this?
Baton Rouge is consistently ranked among the higher-crime midsize U.S. cities, with violent crime rates far above the national average.
Oxford, by contrast, is generally considered one of the safer college towns in Mississippi, with far fewer homicides and violent crimes overall. Its crime profile is more comparable to other SEC university towns than to large urban centers like Baton Rouge.
For perspective:
• Baton Rouge violent crime rates are commonly reported around 900–1,000+ violent crimes per 100,000 residents.
• Oxford’s violent crime rate is only a fraction of that.
A practical way to think about it:
• Baton Rouge = major Southern metro with significant urban violent crime issues.
• Oxford = relatively low-crime college community centered around University of Mississippi

"Oxford...is...one of the safer college towns in Mississippi..."

Um, being in the top few...among a few...ain't exactly braggin' rights.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
