Bill Crawford: Millsaps, Ole Miss Top College Scoreboard Earnings Report

Millsaps College edging out Ole Miss was among the interesting takeaways from the recent update to a key earnings metric by the U.S. Department of Education. The DOE released College Scorecard data showing median annual earnings for college graduates four years after they graduate.

Millsaps’ median graduate earnings of $67,303 just beat the $66,243 reported for Ole Miss/UMMC.

MUW at $62,987 joined these two as the only four-year institutions topping the national average of $60,428.

Only Meridian Community College at $50,810 topped the national two-year college average of $50,128.

All Mississippi four-year institutions and 14 of 15 community colleges exceeded the high school median of $29,193 – the nation’s lowest; the national average was $32,842.

Other results included Mississippi State at $59,311, Mississippi College at $55,434, JSU at $55,318, William Carey at $54,242, Belhaven at $51,795, Blue Mountain at $49,347, Southern Miss at $48,593, DSU at $47,248, ASU at $45,495, MS Gulf Coast CC at $44,103, Pearl River CC at $43,603, Northeast MS CC at $43,163, Tougaloo at $42,641, Northwest MS CC at $42,368, East MS CC at 42,022, Itawamba CC at $41,849, Rust at $41,313, MVSU at $40,972, Hinds CC at $40,042, Holmes CC at $39,984, MS Delta CC at $37,960, Copiah Lincoln CC at $36,902, Jones College at $36,540, Coahoma CC at $31,140, and Southwest MS CC at $27,408.

Colleges that accept federal financial aid must report data for the College Scorecard. The earnings data tracks graduates who are working and not enrolled in a higher education program. Earnings for four-year institutions where many top students immediately enter graduate school and for two-year colleges where many students transfer to four-year institutions may not reflect the actual value of their undergraduate degrees.

Regional labor markets and job mix can greatly influence median earnings. The number of graduates employed within the state versus out of state matters – Mississippi salaries lag those in other states. Also, only 41% of jobs in Mississippi – driven by our mix of retail, service and agricultural jobs – require more than a high school diploma.

Top fields of study heavily influenced median earnings. These included: MSU Electrical, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering at $106,839, $95,968, and $93,893 respectively; ASU Registered Nursing at $93,159; Southern Miss Polymer Science and Registered Nursing at $92,919 and $72,411 respectively; Ole Miss Registered Nursing, Accounting, and Finance at $87,701, $85,482, and $80,488 respectively; MS Gulf Coast, Southwest MS, and MS Delta Nursing at $76,778, $76,451, and $75,723 respectively; Millsaps Business Administration and Management at $76,477; Mississippi College Registered Nursing at $71,800; East MS Precision Metal Working at $50,571; and MS Gulf Coast Electromechanical and Industrial Technologies at $48,000 - $54,000.

Keep in mind that average doesn’t truly report how many Millsaps alumni earn over $250k per year with a liberal arts degree. A lot of you mouth breathing hayseeds mock my education. But I likely earn more than all of you magatards.

Does that include going to work for Pops?

This is the dumbest ranking and use of data I have ever seen when it comes to colleges and universities.

What is sad is that we have a federal agency that spends billions telling us what we already know. Pull the plug now!

Form 1040, Line 11 ... Put up.

I seriously doubt the reliability of this statistical info. Crawford seems to rely on any government statistics that proves his opinions. He is a Millsaps graduate, a school with a failing enrollment & financial collapse.

My son graduated USM with a degree in PolySci and DID get a job in Athens GA working in PolySci! He doesn't quite make what is the listed expectation, and unfortunately everything over there is SO expensive.

Exactly. Bogus report.

"Keep in mind that average doesn’t truly report how many Millsaps alumni earn over $250k per year with a liberal arts degree."

The facts and figures regarding Mississippi schools use median data, not averages. An actual graduate making $250K should know the difference.

That said, it blows the whole "college is a waste of money" trope right out of the water.

This is Xactly the attitude of you with educations towards people who do not have them. If your F$#@! nose was any higher on your head you'd drown in a rain storm...On the other hand I can't wait for you to bring your pickup into my shop for repairs...Be seein you...

The damage to society via United Methodist affiliated Millsaps College’s leftist indoctrination, has been tremendous.

Before any parent spends one dime for a so-called education from Millsaps, research the financial terrorism the United Methodist Church unleashed on those of us that chose to disaffiliate from their ungodliness.

I went back to get my degree. When I earned my degree, I was fired from my job at the same time. When your boss says you have nothing to worry about that is when you need to start looking for another job. I guess, I'll be driving an 18-wheeler which is the last thing I want to do. Mississippi job market sucks!!!!!

Very noticeable among influential degrees is nursing. If JSU had a nursing degree it would be in the top three in median earning. No matter it will never happen. Remarkable what they do with so little.

Millsaps grad - paid 7 figures in taxes many years. That said lots of UM grads made much more than me. Find what you are good at and do it and have fun. Quit comparing checkbooks. Life is short and at 60….your friends start dying. Live life. Have sex. Drink for gods sake.

Our Republican governor, Tate Reeves, is a Millsaps grad. So was Johnny Carson.

Carson earned his degree from the University of Nebraska. He attended Millsaps before joining the Navy.

Hmmm... That 99% admission rate for Ole Miss must be working -- and educating Rhodes Scholars. Ole Miss has 27, Mississippi State has 2, Southern Miss has none.

All you “experts” do realize (I hope) that all of these starting salaries are self-reported and on the honor system. The whole thing is a joke. You can’t make a kid tell you how much he is making, and some lie and over-state what they are making. This is not reliable data by a long shot. Just another worthless government report.

1:50, according to the Department of Education:

"This information is generated by Federal Student Aid data systems, with individual records matched against administrative W-2 and 1040SE records at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)."

I'm pretty sure no one overstates their income when it's time to repay student loans, or pay federal taxes.

Stop and think for a moment about how many Milsaps and Ole Miss grads are out of state residents who take out of state jobs that pay more and skew reporting figures. As Twain said, “There are lies, damned lies, and then you have statistics.”

Dude, my friends started dying long before 60. And if I hadn't quit drinking, I would have too.

The vast majority of male Millsaps grads that I know are right of center or don’t talk about politics at all nowadays.

Female Millsaps grads on the other hand…

8:11 Making more than all of us. What a loser.

Might make sense to take four year cost of attendance and see what the ROI is, I'm thinking UM might be further ahead.

I have a degree from Ole Miss and Millsaps. I worked full time and went to school through age 37. Yes my degrees helped me get jobs but if u really want to grow your career and learn how the rest of the world lives and leave Mississippi especially if u are not a white man. U are wasting ur time here if u want to make a difference. Good ole boys have ruined this state. You will use your energy in a more productive way and you won’t have to mingle with idiots and small brains. You can actually use ur skills to change the world. If you are young, smart and motivated, get out!!!! Use ur brain to the fullest. Don’t waste your time here. It really is a much brighter world without the silly discrimination the white Mississippi man loves. Yes I made more money but never as much as my male counterparts. Don’t repeat my mistake! Luckily I was able to do the silent quit for 10 years and collect my inflated salary from tenure. I spent that time and their resources building my retirement and making sure my family does not repeat my mistake of working here. So I guess I was paid fairly for my last 10 years. But I still had to settle for less. Why did I not leave while I could? LOVE. I married a rooted man. Luckily it is my kids that are pulling him away from
MS. Love will make u do stupid things but it also saves u. Patience paid off. None of my kids or grands are here. They are reaping the benefits of more opportunities elsewhere. Thank goodness. Unfortunately, I still have to bide my time here since I’m taking care of parents. I am trying my best to be patient but if you think the good ole boy system is bad, move over to eldercare. It really sucks.

I own bars. Glad you realized you had a problem and quit. Now I’m speaking to people without addiction problems. Drink up!

That comment on the DOE site is BS. I was tasked one year to beg graduating students to fill out the survey that asked for the data. And why would you assume every student has a student loan? Many of the best student don’t (heard of scholarships)?

May 31, 8:11 AM,

get off the phone, your lunch break is over. Wal-Mart shoppers are relying on you to finish mopping the floor, Mr. $250,000+.
In my experience, high earners don't go around telling what they're earning.

I find it hard to believe that a middle-aged, professional-career adult with multiple college degrees habitually writes using "u" and "ur" instead of "you" and "your."

But I guess it's possible. It would explain the income disparity, compared to professional colleagues.

Is UMC data a part of the OM data? That kinda skews things

8:26, I’m an attorney, but I don’t around telling people to get into car wrecks.

Does earning more equal better person? Does that make you a superior human being? Your comment shows that earning more doesn’t make you a better person in any way. Good job!

12:34, my church disaffiliated. I love my alma mater though. GO MAJORS!

There are many jobs in MS. I just went from mechanic to teacher. I could make more being a mechanic but my impact would be greater as a teacher. The only person that will put you in that truck seat is you. Have a greater expectation of yourself and find a better path.

Anonymous said...

I can understand the point you are making. But, you want to know a secret? The “good ol’ boy” system affects White people too. If you don’t know someone, White or Black, you will not get that job. Why do the same people get elected, promoted and glorified? They play the game to get a specific result. My advice, play the MS game if you want to advance here.

4:42 PM, and the leftists running the United Methodist Church….that believe in mail in ballots…. that believe that not even an ID should be required to vote in our country’s elections….required that you be present for the disaffiliation vote, didn’t they?

It didn’t matter how long you had been a member, it didn’t matter how much you had donated, it didn’t matter if you were in the hospital with no possibility of being there, you had to be present on that day, at that time, for that 2/3 vote to disaffiliate requirement, didn’t you?

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

7:07, yes, I did, but my feelings on disaffiliation don't at all impact my feelings on Millsaps. As Millsaps alums know, the United Methodist Church's involvement is actually pretty minimal. Very little influence on the college overall. Disaffiliation sucked for sure. LOTS of thoughts on that.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
