Brown water is flowing through the faucets of some Jackson homes, especially those in Pear Orchard Park and Waterford Place. However, there is an explanation for the discoloration.
JXN Water Manager Theodore Henifin said manganese levels in the Ross Barnett Reservoir rise at this time of year. It is usually not a problem as rain water dilutes the manganese. Unfortunately, we are enduring a bit of a dry spell right now.
Higher manganese levels have not been a problem in the past as the O.B. Curtis plant treated the water. However, the conventional side is down right now, leaving only the membrane side to treat water. The membrane is not as good as the conventional part in filtering the water of manganese.
Mr. Henifin said the water is safe to drink but advised against washing clothes if brown water is coming out of the faucet as it might stain the clothes.

Right. It’ll stain your clothes, so don’t use it to wash clothes, but feel free to drink it. I’ve tried to keep an open mind about Teddy, but, this crap is why I haven’t drunk Jackson water for 12 years. Was born here, raised here, not leaving here. Teddy’s bot earning his fat paycheck. Give somebody else a shot.
"Brown water is flowing through the faucets of some Jackson homes"
It's only that old Jackson Water "boo boo".
The unpaid chimpanzee/zoo water bill may have had something to do with it.
KF explained what was happening 9:15
Lots of comments on Nextdoor social media reporting that JXN Water is not answering their phones.
9:57 I just called Jxn Water. They picked up on 2nd ring.
Not true 9:57 cause I called today.
They must not be calling the right #
I always get an answer.
Has Hennifin given results of testing (mg/L)? Manganism is a neurological effect, from regularly drinking water containing high manganese levels, especially harmful to children. Like a previous commenter, I have used only gallon bottles of tested spring water for drinking and filtered water for cooking. We use Jxn Water from the tap only for bathing, washing and the yard.
How is flushing going to help if the problem is the Rez???
Also Ted’s employee, Terrence Byrd says one side of Curtis can’t handle the manganese and the other side is not in service due to construction improvements. Sounds like membrane side is offline. Picked the wrong time of year for that kinda work!!!
Greenville still have brown water?
Greenville has had brown water for decades. The locals say they love it (bless their hearts).
It's also a fact that Greenville has slid from one of the largest, most productive, industry laden cities in the state...to a dungeon of drugs, gangs, out-migration, terrible schools and piss poor municipal leadership in the South.
Brown water fosters the disappearance of brain cells and makes you dumber.
Greenville has brown water. Greenville is the pits and the people are dumb. Connect the dots.
Mix brown water and weed, now you are killing some brain cells
What to worry?
Manganese is a naturally occurring mineral found in rocks, soil, and water. It is essential for human health in small amounts, playing a role in bone formation, glucose metabolism, and wound healing. However, excessive exposure to manganese can lead to health issues, particularly affecting the nervous system and cognitive functions
It is ABSURD that I cannot wash my clothes at home!!! My water bill for 1 person was over $130 last month. The bill for my sprinklers that I have not used was $20. I’m tired of paying for others who don’t pay.
When will this be resolved???
Thank God we’re finally waking up to the lack of leadership at JXN Water! CLR and cheap cleaning vinegar rescued my laundry the other day, but this is some mess.
2:16 this is not a mess. They explained
it to the citizens. You really don't know
how water systems work, do you?
12:12 does that $130 include garbage?
JXN Water may pick up the phones but they cannot/will not help. They 'have to have someone call you back in 1-3 days'. I have never received a return call from them.
They do help people. I know of it.
Some of y’all are too busy drinking Ted’s bath water.
12:07 starting next week Jxn Water will
have where you can see someone in
person. Check their website next week.
