Madison-Rankin County District Attorney Ashley Allen issued the following statement.
Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Bubba Bramlett announced today that Shunquez Harris, 17, of Canton, pled guilty to strong arm robbery in Madison County Circuit Court and was sentenced yesterday to the maximum of 15 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. On October 11, 2024, the Canton Police Department received a call from a concerned mother and her son, who is also seventeen. The mother stated that her son had been robbed of his shoes while in a gas station in Canton. Officers were able to obtain surveillance of the suspect entering the store behind the victim, flashing a handgun at the victim, and the victim taking off his shoes and handing them to the suspect. Officers recognized Harris in the video from previous dealings with him. The victim was able to confirm Harris was the person who robbed him of his shoes. Harris would later admit to the robbery to investigators with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and Canton Police Department.![]() |

The Defendant elected to proceed to trial but ultimately changed his mind and entered a guilty plea after voir dire. The State dismissed another armed robbery indictment against Harris as part of the plea as that victim had moved out of state. District Attorney Bramlett stated, “Please let this case put all young people on notice in Madison and Rankin counties: I do not care how old you are. If you commit crimes with a firearm in my district, I have original jurisdiction over your case. You will be indicted as an adult, and you will face prison time. This teenager lost the next 15 years of his life over a pair of tennis shoes. I will not stand for senseless acts of violence against the citizens of Madison and Rankin counties.”

Gotta be da shoes. I didndu nuffin.
Did the victim get his shoes back?
Maybe the prison will give him a pair of tennis shoes to wear. That would be a fairytale ending to this story.
Well done Mr. Bramlett! Hopefully, he will not receive any parole. It was just a matter of time before he killed someone.
Good.
"What are you in for?"
"Stealing some kid's tennis shoes"
Not alot of street cred here
Can we put enough tags to save this on the internet for the next 5-10 years? Don't want someone like the Institute for Justice to argue he should be released, it was only shoes public outcry. It was armed robbery!
It's not about the shoes he stole, it's about the gun he used and the threats he made to do it. There's a difference between a robbery and a theft.
That's how Canton teens roll.
Do a robbery in Madison County and you're a "shoo in" for prison.
The willingness to take someone else's life for their tennis shoes is beyond tragic. I can't imagine having to experience something like that and process it. Something you usually only see in the third world, where people are murdered for their cell phones. So sad it exists right here, in Mississippi. Hopefully the victim can live a full life.
It sounds like the perpetrator already had a history of doing this, which is also unimaginably sad--to be that disconnected from others and living things at 17. Hope he can be a success story and be rehabilitated in prison, because for his sake and our sakes, he will re-enter our society one day 15 years from now.
Auntie: "He's a gooda boy. He needed the shoes to walk to VBS."
Whenever 'shun' or 'demon' are woven into names, they seem to become self-fulfilling prophesies. At the very least, they serve as warnings.
Any bets that he dropped out of school before the 11th grade?
15 years? Really not long enough. If you're running around flashing guns for shoes, imagine what you are really capable of. Good riddance!
It's Canton, an annex of Jackson.
I hope somebody puts this quote on a billboard entering both counties
Wonder how many have been killed over their Jordans and Starter jackets back in the day?
Officers recognized Harris in the video from previous dealings with him.

Young man you heard the beginning of the gangsta movie/rap video but too high to comprehend the ending.
Thanks to the DA, the only way to get these fools attention is stiff punishment!
To all Big Mama’s, tell your youngings that Canton is in the jurisdiction of the Madison County DA and he will protect the citizens of his County!
Somewhere R Warnock chuckles...
