What did Leon Trotsky, Josef Stalin, Mahatma Gandhi, and Lee Harvey Oswald all have in common? Tying these infamous men into his sermon on the opening lines of the Sermon on the Mount, the late Dr. Frank Pollard mourned how they went to church as young men yet turned away because of the hypocrisy and shallowness they saw. Indeed, Stalin studied for the priesthood until he became disillusioned.
Some pray loudly in public. Others pen long effusive prayers on Facebook. Citing Matthew 5, Dr. Pollard preached we should pray in private and focus on living faith in public. Then there is the story he told of Norvell Slater. Go to 21:00 in the 1997 sermon posted below for a lesson in forgiveness. Enjoy.
Scripture: Matthew 5: 17-47

Really good point. First church I went to as a kid, the preacher yelled, screamed, threatened hell. It was horrible for a kid. I thought---if this is church, no thanks. I don't want some man screaming at me and I dont know what I did wrong. Teenager saw some folks just smiling then lying thru their teeth. Again, I thought---no thanks. Finally dawned on me, look to God. Look to the bible. People come in all shapes but our Lord is constant. That did it. Sometimes people let you down. But God doesn't.
