Jackson State University issued the following statement.
We are aware that a shooting took place late last night on Dalton Street involving two individuals that are not affiliated with Jackson State University. We are thankful that no students were involved or harmed.
At the direction of Dr. Elayne Hayes Anthony, acting president of Jackson State University, a security plan was implemented for homecoming that included an increased security presence and checkpoints to enter campus for the Homecoming weekend. Those measures will continue. We would like to thank the JSU Department of Public Safety and the Capitol Police Department for their immediate response to this matter. We ask that everyone please remain vigilant to report any concerns to the Jackson State University Department of Public Safety.
Kingfish note: What the press release does not state is one person was wounded in the leg.

Not familiar with Dalton Street. Is it on the campus of JSU?
While the press release is quick to credit the interim president for her security plan and even quicker to distance the university from the shooters...was this weapon-discharge an outgrowth of the homecoming festivities?
Are there other universities in Mississippi that beef-up security and experience gunfire during homecoming?
Thankful for the Capitol Police....not a JPD unit in site, I guess?
It wasn't an actual shooting. It was a "matter."
Leg shot equals poor target acquisition or sloppy trigger pull.
How are the JSU spin doctors going to explain a second shooting where the student died? Will they call that a "matter" also?
I guess the "gun free zone" (GFZ) rules haven't kicked in yet?
Bad news for Anthony becoming permanent.
Maybe it is time for JSU to move to Madison.
