Update (2/6/23): MBI is investigating the death.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones issued the following statement.
He had been held at the Raymond Detention Center since June 9, 2021 for the charge of Capital Murder stemming from a 2019 JPD investigation and a hold by MS Department of Corrections. There is no foul play suspected at this time.

Right to a speedy trial is not available in Hinds County.
Been there 2 years and waiting on trial?
If, u could mine the lead in the Hinds County judiciary....we would all be rich
"There is no foul play suspected at this time."
Might actually be a man taking responsibility for his action. But I'm betting his momma calls a press conference at the insistence of the Jack Legs lining up.
Time for the Feds to take over! It’s not safe there for even killers. Just wondering anyone know how long it was before he was found and did he have a roommate?
Bet them white shirts( shift supervisors) getting their lies straight and cooking the logs!
Sheriff how many more suicides before election?
Federal Jail take over in 3 - 2 - 1...
He had only been charged, not convicted. Why so long for a trial?
Been in jail for 19 months awaiting trial? Is that normal or is that just normal in Hinds Co?
Not going to help the county's fight against the consent decree
Agreed. Two years is too long. But people will bitch about the State setting up the CCID courts to speed this along.
2:49 - Is the delay by the court or the suspect? A lawyer who chooses to do so, can delay a triaal for quite a while, often by simply saying he is not yet ready and then asking for a delay. Yes there is a right to a speedy trial, but not a requirement. Just my speculation - I am not a lawyer and have never been in the criminal court system for anything.
It is really sad that this young man committed a crime and put himself in this situation to be housed in the Hinds County Jail. I surmise he had no hope, if this was a suicide!
I think it’s time for the DOJ to take over. The jail personnel in Hinds County cannot keep inmates safe for trail or transfer.
It’s not the Sheriffs fault directly, it’s the personnel he hired.
Sheriff it’s time to hire grown, hearing, seeing, caring and thinking men and women. No amount of training can help employees without those traits. Oh yea and common sense is a must.
7:03 - You say, 'common sense is a must', yet you had just a few lines back said he is guilty of committing a crime. How do you justify that discombobulation? He had never been tried, much less convicted, and had sat there for almost two years.
The real tragedy here is that he will no longer generate billable revenue for any of the great local attorneys!
The defense lawyers are not clamoring for speedy trials. They are ones asking for delay after delay because they know the longer it goes, the less likely their client gets convicted. Turnover in law enforcement is high and getting higher. It’s the judges who won’t push these cases to trial.
Captain Obvious. Our system across the land is long jail holds for those who cannot make bail. Then make pleas, time in Prison regardless of ability if funded to win the case. On Premediated murder, trial in a few months, execution by the state if guilty in several months, not decades. Yet some blessed and released, commit another murder, carjacking etc before trial on initial charges. This is not working in making 'we the people' safer.
Several of you have opinions about a 'delay', yet you base those opinions (lawyers, judges, etc) on nothing.
Then along comes 8:04 who, at first, blames it on defense lawyers, then winds up blaming it on judges.
8:04 nailed it. The defense attorneys purposely use delay tactics, and the judges allow it. Pay attention to local news reports of notable convictions. Many were for crimes committed in 2018!
I can’t blame guilty perps for wanting to delay their own trial. As bad as Raymond jail is, it’s still better than Parchman prison.
Years ago I got a DUI. The cop who gave it to me was the one who gave out the most DUIs for the year and was given a metal. My attorney delayed it until the DUI cop was given a DUI. He left the force and became a lawyer. They dismissed my DUI.
“ found un responsive and hanging in his cell by officers at 11:10 am”. What time they feed breakfast? Why find him at 11:10, was it lunch time? How many were on duty in that pod?
DOJ take over the Jail
I’ll bet you $100 he was deceased for more than 8 hrs. Lets be real no one checking on inmate movement.
Any word on the two (escapees) walk a ways, on one of the coldest night in December while wearing flip flops, orange jumpsuits hanging off there asses.
Climbed over razor wire fences walked to a church a mile away, drove all the way to Texas with no money, then pushed the truck in a lake north of Dallas Texas.
Now Sheriff, I know you know it’s time to fold. Let the DOJ have a try at it.
You just don’t have the right people in place to watch the inmates.
"...and was given a metal."
Given a metal what?
Sheriff you cannot lead your staff into battle for they have no will to fight. Some have no common decency which destroys the will of the ones trying to fight the good fight.
You have to weed out the bad seeds so the ones trying to do what’s right can do so.
As I said before, just ask the inmates
Signed, a former Corrections Deputy
Now DOJ take over
