Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces the conviction of Stefan Champion of murder in the 2019 shooting death of Jockeys Wright. Champion, whose trial was scheduled to begin today in Hinds County Circuit Court, changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced to serve twenty-four (24) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) for his role in the murder.
On May 22, 2019, Champion and co-defendant, Charles Willis, shot and killed 19-year-old Jockeyus Wright, as Wright was walking east on McDowell Road in South Jackson. The motive for the shooting stemmed from a prior dispute between Willis and Wright. Willis, who was convicted last year, is currently serving a twenty-seven (27) year sentence for Wright’s murder.
Champion was sentenced to forty (40) years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) with twenty-four (24) years to serve, and sixteen (16) years suspended, followed by five (5) years of post-release supervision. Under Mississippi law, Champion will be required to serve the entirety of his twenty-four year sentence without the benefit of reduction or parole.
“We are failing our youth when a social media dispute leads to one teenager losing his life and two others spending the majority of their lives in prison,” DA Owens said following the sentencing. “We need to ask ourselves what we are doing as a community to educate our youth about the value of human life and how to resolve conflict without resorting to gun violence.”

Kids raised with no parents. Thanks to the federal government.

You already know the answer.
how many convictions by a jury in Hinds County the past year?
I bet the outcome of a jury trial in HC signifigantly better than a guilty plea and jail
“'WE' are failing our youth when a social media dispute leads to one teenager losing his life and two others spending the majority of their lives in prison,” DA Owens said following the sentencing. “'WE' need to ask ourselves what we are doing as a community to educate our youth about the value of human life and how to resolve conflict without resorting to gun violence.”
WE? How about the parentS (plural) of these youths? As long as society accepts (promotes) the single parent (grandparent) conditions into which these youths are born, it only gets worse from here...........
Remember a time when there was a concept known as "shame?" It was a concept that caused people to refrain from unacceptable behavior...or to at least consider it before moving forward. Have you ever thought about the fact that there is NO shame for ANYTHING in today's society? Our religious (moral) compass is gone, so it should be no surprise we are where we are.
We are where we are
And it is what it is.
It Ain't gonna change,
Might as well take a whiz.
I am middle of the road on most things but 3:44 is correct. "We" cannot parent a child born into the typical dysfunction of todays society.
As a former JPS teacher, it was unrelenting. Young kids, over and over, telling me about Mom's many boyfriends who hit her or living with grandparents that were trying to raise multiple generations of grandkids who'd been abandoned.
No matter how much "We" want to help, these kids go home and see utter lack of morals and no rules or boundaries. The family unit is broken and wont be repaired in my retired life. And "We" cannot raise other people's children.
