Bread & Circuses

The city of Jackson did not issue a boil water notice until late Saturday afternoon, a full day after the Mississippi State Department of Health issued its own notice. One would think Mayor Lumumba might have been troubled enough to brief his subjects or issue a boil water notice much sooner but he was tied up with more important affairs of state Saturday:

Yup.  While Jackson went without clean water, Hizzoner was passing out the goodies and yukking it up at Smith-Wills Saturday.

THE "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal --the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.

"But the Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious. When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. This was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince's own eccentric yet august taste. A strong and lofty wall girdled it in. This wall had gates of iron. The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts. They resolved to leave means neither of ingress or egress to the sudden impulses of despair or of frenzy from within. The abbey was amply provisioned. With such precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion. The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think. The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the "Red Death."  (Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque of the Red Death)

If you spent as much time lifting up the African-American community and celebrating our achievements, as you spend attacking our leadership, institutions, and magnifying the faults of our poorest, perhaps we could permit you to have a voice. But as it stands, this is a hate blog. And it is long past time to shut down this hateful menace.

Please don't be too hard on Hizhonor. The reason he didn't let his citizens know in a timely manner was probably he didn't know himself. There were other important press obligations and photo ops going on.

Elect a clown, expect a circus.

So, basically, Lamumba is modeling Trump - sit on your ass during a crisis hoping that if you ignore it, maybe it will go away or your stupid followers will decide that it is not a problem at all.

3:04 PM
Put up or shut up: Name 5 achievements by Jackson "administration".

Anonymous said...

3:04. 1985 style blame is in the past.

you really think lumumba is doing good work? drink the water, walk the streets… wake up!

the mayor could be buffalo wing orange for all i care. he’s incompetent and needs to be removed from office before even more damage to the city is done.

@304pm...."we could permit you to have a voice??" We? Who is "we?" Are you in the band? Those going down with the Titanic had a band.

The "we" might permit "us" to have a voice. Nice. There are those of us who are not part of the "we" that have long since grown weary of being called names for merely pointing out factual information. I've been done. The concern for the leadership (if it can be called that) of Jackson should be that it appears that folks like Jeff Goode and others are getting close to being done, as well.

3:04 You have a point.

August 1, 2022 at 3:04 PM; blah, blah, blah, blah. we're talking about a capital city that can't go 2 months without having a boil water notice, that is, in most cases, the direct result of a mismanaged, unmanaged, incompetent, water department and mayors office.

kingfish could fill a book with the accomplishments of black people, but we aren't discussing that. we're discussing the absolute failure of this particular black man and his entire administration.

but i guess if we all decided to discuss the greatness of harriet tubman, martin luther king jr, booker t washington, clarence thomas, ben carson, and the multitudes of other highly accomplished black folks, instead of discussing the failure that is chowkey, then maybe everything in jackson will fix itself.

i also see you are a good little leftist based on your belief that you somehow have the right to allow, and not allow, someone a voice that disagrees with your own. that sounds a little bit fascist to me.

the truth is not racist. the truth is the truth. chowkey is a failure. an absolute complete failure. that is the truth. chowkey is a failure because he is a marxist democrat failure. not because he's black.

3:04, A hate blog? For simply pointing out the obvious? Maybe if our city leadership did anything right, he could “celebrate their achievements”.

" this is a hate blog. And it is long past time to shut down this hateful menace."

Put down the crack pipe sport model.
This is one a few sites where the truth is reported.
(And documented at every presser)

BTW, did you get your free bottled water today at your neighborhood Fire Station ?

3:04 is high on the list of the problems we face. Like in fairytales, he wants to ignore all failure. That’s the the problem. 3:04 wouldn’t know accountability if it slapped them in the face.

Anonymous said...

@3:56 Well said. You nailed it.

"Welcome to the finish line Jackson. This is your captain, Chokeway, speaking...please enjoy the ruins I have created for you."

3:04 sorry, but 'we' have already allowed KF to have a voice on these matters and his voice trumps yours. Get lost. We don't need the victimhood mentality disease rubbing off on anyone else. Good grief. You go have fun drinking the contaminated water while you and your pals try to find something to praise this pathetic excuse of administration for.

3:04. take a drive down Medger Evers Blvd....when the name was changed to honor Mr Evers from Delta Drive, I thought the community would show pride and keep it a safe clean street...but it's way worse than it ever has been...Shame those who disrespect Medgar so...change the name back to Delta Drive if you can't do better than that! pitiful...

Jackson is the worst city in the country and what does race have to do with it.

Anonymous said...

304:Yes, it is good to give credit to whom credit is due. However, it is equally important to call wrong, wrong, no matter who does it ---black, white, liberal, conservative. In the case of Mayor Lumumba, one would be hard pressed to render an objective assessment of his leadership as "good", effective or even adequate. A good leader builds coalitions, not divisions; sets appropriate, sensible priorities and goals; works toward those goals systematically and consistently; does not blame others for their own inadequacies and mistakes; seeks the betterment of all and does not alienate those in a position to help. Its not a matter of black or white, but common sense.

Disinformation. Doesn't count.

3:04: If that's all you want, go to the Mississippi Link and Jackson Advocate. They quit doing any real reporting many, many moons ago.

3:04 - Do tell. Since you're the new town crier and have announced it's high time to shut down the only pipeline this state has to the corruption in Jackson....Just how do you propose to do that?

You can't boycott the blog. You can't complain to the EEOC. You can't any longer scream RACIST and shut down purveyors of truth. It must be troubling for you. But, even more troubling for the entire state is the fact that people like you exist out there on the perimeter of the sinkhole that is Jackson...and that you support the totally disastrous mockery of municipal government that presides over our once beautiful and productive capital city. I guess everybody who read your post is left to wonder 'what's in it for you?'

But, please, while you're at it, list just two, no just one, thing your boy Chokwe has done that warrants 'celebrating our achievements'.

All you dumb asses that took the bait from 3:04 please stop and think about not giving these baiters a platform. Thank you in advance.

3:04 I think your racism is just pathetic. Keeping racism alive is really good for special interest groups who make big money off the issue. I can't believe they've kept it going so many years. It is really effective at creating division, tension and negative energy. It has destroyed Jackson. I wish you love and light and good things in your life. That chip on your shoulder must be pretty heavy. Maybe it is time to remove it.

3:04 pm You are wrong! Nothing Should be more important than the residents of Jackson as you pay the Mayors salary. There is No Reason for him to be out of town. Cell phones, land lines and internet/email can save the city millions in travel money.Heck there is even Zoom. The health and safety of citizens are by far the most important!

Color blind said...

@3:04. Playing the race card is out of style. Ignorance and incompetence has not color. And that’s exactly what we have in Jackson.

11:18 on Monday and the Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, Chockwe Lumumba is having a mental breakdown in his driveway. I’m calling 911 to get help, but they refuse to answer. Apparently, he is victim of high levels of turbidity and realizing the failures of anyone and everyone except for himself.

Sometimes I wonder if this is real life.

Kudos to the Kingfish for referencing Poe's masterpiece. I wonder how many people have read it.

Just between you and me, KF, it's plain to see people are sick up to here of 3:04's shit. It's all worn thin.

At one point I thought the problems associated with Jackson was from incompetence, I was stupid to think that. No body could be that incompetent. This is a direct result of intentional actions to bring down a once prosperous city. Jackson used to have a reason for me to visit and live there. I want it to succeed, if for no other reason that it is the capitol of Mississippi. The elected leadership, for what ever reasons, has decided to destroy Jackson. Greed, avaricious, envy, corruption and hatred apparently dictate every action of the current leadership of jackson. If there is nothing in it for them...... Where else in the country are you told to "Don't drink the water". You would think you are headed to some south of the boarder backwater ruled by some tin-pot drug lord. My question is "Why are they re-elected.

Anonymous said...

@9:43
No it is clear that KF is censoring the comments (including mine) that agree with 3:04. It’s also clear that KF himself is a shameless racist.

Anonymous said...

9:43. You don’t seem censored to me. Tell you what. Since 3:04 can’t list even some of the great things he says exist, why don’t you help him out. Jumping up and down and crying “racist” is childish. An insult is not a response to a point. Looking at things from a different perspective, even assuming some posters here are “racist” (however defined) how would that make an accurate statement about the state of affairs in Jackson inaccurate?

Anonymous said...

10:11, if Kingfish is so racist, why are you here reading and supporting his blog? If you don’t like it, move along. No one is making you come to this site.

Citywide Boil water 5 times in 20 months. Shouldnt that be enough for a state takeover of the city. To me that says total mismangement. How many boil water notices for city in prior administrations?

Anonymous said...

I dont know what is more surprising 5 citywid e boil water notices in 20 months or the fact the most incapable mayor ever (yep even worse than yarbrough or Frank) recieved 87% of the vote in relection. Like a wise man told me you cant worry about a mans problems more thn he does and apparently Jackson is happy with Baby Chok

Anonymous said...

And for those who say its not Chok fault Im sorry, He is the leader and its his watch. Good or Bad. Its not getting better in fact getting worse. So You have to fire the head. Im open to other solutions. But no giving these grifters a billion dollars to fix infrastructure we have seen their work on the water system. sorry give somebody else a try. I have a horrible feelings their woudl be lawsuits and consultants and ten years from now even worse infrastructure. Sorry not fiscally responsible.

The population of Jackson is not the only thing that has been dropping in recent years. The average IQ of the city has taken a big hit. Even rats are smart enough to abandon a sinking ship.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
