Fiddling, Fiddling, Fiddled

There is no other way to put it: Jackson's water system is on the verge of collapse.  Jackson's leaders shucked and jived  for years about the water system as they covered up its true nature,  but fortunately, the EPA called their bluff.  WLBT's C.J. Lemasters and Anthony Warren obtained the records Jackson gave to the EPA and reported their  findings last night.  Be warned: rage may bubble up within while watching their report. Here is a brief taste of what WBLT reported last night:

The documents paint a stark picture, showing that the Curtis plant, which provides water to some 43,000 connections, has just two Class A-certified water operators on the payroll, one-sixth the number it needs to be fully staffed.

A November 2021 email from then-City Engineer Charles Williams said that the shortages were so bad that if one more water operator left, the city would have to shut down one of its plants.

Meanwhile, timesheets for June 2022 show that water operators at the J.H. Fewell plant logged hundreds of hours of overtime to ensure a Class A operator was on duty at all times, a requirement under federal law....

Carter’s correspondence also reveals another, more troubling fact. Carter asked Public Works Director Marlin King multiple times for a “water/sewer loader,” a document that includes information on all positions currently filled, open and frozen.

She said she needed the information so she could “devise a plan” to bring on a part-time water operator to provide relief.

More than a month after asking for that document, though, she had still not received it, and as of August 18, no worker has been hired.

“Never has a PW director forbade a deputy director from receiving an employee loader,” she told King. “It appears you don’t understand the urgency of this situation.”

Ward 7 Councilwoman Virgi Lindsay first read the email when she was provided a copy by 3 On Your Side. “I’m about to cry,” she said. “I mean, that is unbelievable.”.... WLBT story.

Mr. Lemasters reported the story in two separate five-minute videos in the story.  Scroll down a bit to find the second one.  They are both worth watching and give the true nature of the crisis the administration deliberately hid for so long.

Kingfish note: There is one little interesting fact about this crew and it was true about Mayor Lumumba's predecessor as well.  This team has no management experience prior to their current positions.

Mayor: No experience managing anything

Chief of Staff: Academic who earned her PhD.

Chief Administrative Officer: Worked at Entergy but not in operations.

Public Works Director: Architect by training.  No expertise in Public Works.

There is literally no expertise among the leaders in how to actually run anything, much less a major city with a $300+ million budget.  However, they are good at looking sharp and manufacturing excuses.   None can make the simple sound complicated as this crew can.  Don't be shocked when the Mayor comes up with a new excuse at his press conference next week.  He has a particular talent for lying in ways that sound reasonable to the common folks but like an idiot to the experts.  Some may think I am being harsh but the WLBT report and the EPA records show this to be true.  They simply do not know how to run anything as they repeatedly flunk basic management tasks.

The EPA records show a Jackson is a prime example of a dysfunctional organization.  The leaders are barely qualified, experts on everything while knowing nothing while they run the few people who make things run into the ground. Suits are gonna suit and that, my friends, is the bottom line.

All true.

The problem cannot be resolved at the city level.

The most competent people would quit for lack of funding.

It’s a health emergency and the feds must take action to solve the problem.

It could conceivably require the Corp of Engineers to be put in charge to start a process.

Jackson does need a new water treatment plant- they simply need qualified, competent management and workers- PERIOD!
You are dead on KF- Lying Lumumba and his crew of DR's cant even spell management much less manage! Imbeciles.

Chief of staff- academic with no real world experience and living off taxpayers and she is a total fraud and a true idiot
The mayor is a total scam artist
Marlin king is a idiot for sure.

The mayor, maybe, but Mr. King sure was not particularly "good at looking sharp and manufacturing excuses". That guy looked like the biggest moron on the face of the earth

If you talk Lamumbalot, logic says it’s good, right? Present your Drake JR then use emotional appeals. Throw the Race card, then lie on how the State doesn’t pay it’s water bill….DARN!!! I’ve got the script down. I’m running for Mayer of Jackistan.

Too easily explained by Chowke as "administrative gaps, right". And throw in "supply chain issues" as well when it comes to finding a "Class A water operator", right.

Maybe Ashby Foote holds the secret to the 11 secret herbs and spices to get the City out of this jam. Otherwise the choices of Popeyes and Church's aint getting it done.

You know the shit is literally going to hit the fan when a deputy director goes on camera saying the director (her immediate boss) refused to give her the information she needed to do her job and hire more people. I pray they don’t fire her for that insubordination because she’s the only one that appeared to know what she was talking about.

Anonymous said...

Sen. Wicker is talking about building a new water plant. Da Mair might get his big pile of money yet.

Anonymous said...

Virgi can say she didn’t know but she could have. All she had to do is talk to the operators and ask the same question the reporters did. Management 101.

Anonymous said...

His honor baby Chowke always waters down the severity of this crisis.

Anyone have an old copy of the video game Sim City we can get the mayor so he learns what the responsibility of a Mayah is and might learn how to handle a few situations???? 😂

Anonymous said...

Most of the city council members are brain dead/asleep at the wheel. Combine that with Chowke and y'all have the perfect storm - the blind leading the blind.

Why isn't "Mr. Climate Change" Chowke concerned about the 10s of thousands of plastic water bottles that are currently required to nourish the sheeple of Jackistan?

There is a reason that every state agency has a deputy director...because the appointees are all political appointments that have no idea how to run anything, so they hire the deputy director who actually can run things. And that's how its always been and that's fine. Places like Jackson make a political appointment but then every deputy and assistant deputy 4 layers down is also political. Its just a big management payroll fest. Why the EPA hasn't taken the whole water department I don't know.

Anonymous said...

Every council person could have gone down to the plant and asked questions years ago.

Anonymous said...

6:11, when they hire the only person who knows what is going on, get ready for a whistleblower lawsuit and some really stinky water.

Gotta give credit to LeMaster. Dude is pretty good. Unfortunately he is white, so he’s the enemy.

Kingfish said...

They can’t go there unless the Mayor allows it. He won’t let them in. Seriously.

Mayor chewed out one member for an unannounced visit. Told the member to call him first to schedule a visit there.

This administration couldn't pour water out of a bucket with the directions on the bottom. (Not that they have enough to fill a bucket anyway.) Are they not at all civilly liable at least? Seems like a dereliction of duty at minimum.

By the time Wicker and the federal government get the money and build a new water plant (years)the City of Jackson will be abandoned (almost there now). Maybe that is what is needed, to just start over.
Having been born here and spent most of my life here I am amazed how quickly Jackson has deteriorated. Without clean drinking water, open sewage running in the street, a police force that is a shell of what it was, many streets almost impassable and crime out of control, the capital city is truly similar to a third world country.
Jackson may be an example of what this country may look like in the decades to come, with open borders and elected officials worried about staying in power than actually leading. But we have only ourselves to blame, after all we vote for them.

Right?

The Maher is trying to choke off the city so the state or feds are forced to do something. It's his strategy. It's going to get a whole hell of a lot worse before it gets better. Gonna be no garbage pick up and no clean water. It'll be a national embarrassment on a level we haven't seen.

Anonymous said...

Lumumba fired Cynthia Hill, Tim Liddell and Plies from the water treatment compound. His goal was to privatize the water, the same way his CAO done in Detroit. Lady's and Gentlemen it's a robbery. He call Freeing the Land before they Flee the Land.

If I had the EPA breathing down my neck, I’d want it documented in writing or on video that the mayor would not let me in the place. I don’t doubt you kingfish, but damn, he is just one man. One little man. I’d call the lady that the news people talked to. I’d go to her house. The staffing is public record. The council needs to step up.

Anonymous said...

Jackson is failing on purpose regarding water supply. They want the feds to take over on taxpayers’ dime (nationally).

Anonymous said...

Organized Crime will prevail and bring in their own water experts to bail wheel chock. He will also prevail at the elections for another 4 years.

Don Drane said...

It all boils down to this. Bennie Thompson has promised Lumumba and his regime, "I ain't gone let nobody hurt y'all. I gotcha back."

Anonymous said...

The feds will eventually come in and rebuild the system. Hizzhonner will then demand that the city be allowed to run the system. The feds will knuckle under because of RACCCCISM…..

These guys have spent their lives, or at least their academic careers preparing to drive a new Mercedes or Rolls Royce down a smooth road to their social science heaven on earth. The problem is, Jackson needs mechanics not drivers, who know how to fix a broke down Volkswagen or Chevy and drive it over potholes and ditches. The administration is only interested in their "vision" of a city which Jackson cannot be at it's current fiscal level. They simply are not qualified to address the many basic problems presented by a financially distressed mid-sized city like Jackson and there is no one in authority willing to take the heat and responsibility to say ENOUGH!

Special session to enact the necessary emergency manager legislation. Those emails raise questions as to whether someone should be indicated for deliberate indifference to the public’s rights (EPA legislation says clean water is a right).

KF, you nailed it with the making the simple complicated line. For those referencing the lack of management experience, did the mayor ever hold a paycheck job before his current position? Asking for a freind.

Take a look around the country and all the cities that are in trouble are run by democRATS. Hmmmm, think that is a coincidence? If we keep on pace, our country is headed where Jackson is, just on a grand scale.

How are homes being sold in Jackson?

Do not realtors have an obligation to disclose to a potential buyer the horrors of the water system? Does that not scare anyone away? Do they just say "you may need to drink only store bought water." ?

Anonymous said...

I hope it all fails and I hope the state and feds don’t help these idiots, because that’s what they’re expecting. I don’t mind paying a worthless water bill, I’ve been buying bottle watered for years, just to watch these freaks reap what they sow. I love watching train wrecks and dumpster fires.

Thank you, WLBT/CJ Lemaster, and Jackson Jambalaya/Kingfish, for reporting the truth. You stand alone.

You are the ONLY two sources that show what's REALLY happening. Every other news outlet just airs the mayor's LIES as if they were gospel, with nothing to counter them. Then people wonder why citizens of Jackson continue to support such a mayor. It's because they don't know they're being lied to!!

All they know is what most mainstream news outlets are reporting - which is "it's not the mayor's fault and "he can't fix this".

BULLSHIT!!!

We NEVER had this level of dysfunction until the current mayor took office and set about packing the municipal jobs with no-show cronies and family members... if he even bothered to fill them at all.

I am scared to death of how bad this might get by the next election, which is still YEARS in the future.

Media, grow a set!! Give citizens the INFORMATION they NEED!!!! Do your job!!

Marlin King needs to be fired TODAY! Promote Carter, she clearly has (un?)common sense and a work ethic and a desire to do the right thing!! AKA leadership qualities!

If management of the water system is outsourced, COMPETENCE, PERFORMANCE, AND PRICE (in that order) should be the only considerations! Stop worrying about the contractor's skin color or who they're related to or whose campaign they donated to! That crap ends in disaster!!

If Lumumba wanted to completely destroy his reputation and any chance of a political future, he's doing a great job. He needs to RESIGN TODAY and go home (or to see his side piece in Atlanta). We've had enough of him here.

"There is a reason that every state agency has a deputy director...because the appointees are all political appointments that have no idea how to run anything, so they hire the deputy director who actually can run things."

That's not true of every state agency.

"They can’t go there unless the Mayor allows it. He won’t let them in. Seriously."

One way around that is to call the MSDH or MDEQ and tag along with their inspector, who the city will have to let in. It's the law.

Kingfish said...

Virgi can go to hell with her phony tears.

You may remember when this website uncovered the EPA order and broke the news of its existence. Every time Foote or Stamps tried to bring it up, Virgi was the one who carried the administration's water and wanted to go into executive session. She sold out to the admin a long time ago. There is a great deal of collective guilt on her hands. Remember when Stamps tried to bring up Gold Coast? Virgi as Council President shut him down. It was Virgi who led the charge for the Mayor and moved the municipal clerk's office from the council to his control.

No one is buying the tears, Virgi. No one.

Anonymous said...

Kingfish, when people are in charge not to be successful, but to pick up a fat paycheck, they act like bullies to cover for their incompetence. How can the mayor deny the council members permission to visit a city faculty? I can’t see how he could have that much power. How can they be fully informed without such a visit?

This sounds like the superintendent of education in Simpson County - also a highly paid bully. The school board tried to get a bond issue passed (with him as the snake oil salesman) for construction of a new high school. One justification for building a consolidated high school is that the Mendenhall junior high is in terrible shape and needs to be abandoned. A citizen opposed to the bond and consolidation requested permission to visit the junior high to see the condition of the buildings for himself and His Lordship the superintendent denied permission to visit the school.

These kind of incompetent, overpaid, bully bureaucrats are probably the rule more than the exception.

Doesn’t matter if he is friends with Kim Wade because Kim Wade is just like Uncle Ruckus on Boondocks..

August 20, 2022 at 7:34 AM; wrong. the black people in charge here ARE incompetent, incapable, and corrupt. but it's not because they're black, it's because they are incompetent, incapable, and corrupt. if they were competent, capable, and uncorrupted, then things wouldn't be in the shape they're in, now would they? unless this was all being done on purpose, and that would be even worse than being incompetent, incapable and corrupt.

i honestly think the white people in jackson don't give a fuck who is in charge, as long as they have clean water to drink, bathe in, and cook with, or decently maintained roads to drive on, or a sewage system that wasn't pouring shit-water into the streets, or that wasn't dumping more than 50 million gallons of literal shit into local creeks, or a school system that was halfway educating the children, or some functional libraries, or a per capita murder rate that wasn' the highest in the country.

the only thing that was working before chowkey got his hands on it, was the garbage pickup. and he fucked that up. not because he's black, but because he is incompetent, incapable, and corrupt.

people like you are the racists, because you see race as the reason behind everything. i just want the most basic of city services to work. i don't care what color the person in charge is, just make it work.

Kingfish said...

Yeah, I'm not the one who crashed the water system, dumps 52 million gallons of raw sewage, came up with the Siemen's deal, and ran off the police while murders soared.

Just like Porter Bingham, he spouted the same line as he pillaged and plundered blacks throughout Mississippi. Where is he now? Turns out I was right, right.

I bet you didn't defend Carl Newman when they ran him off or Peggy or Darrell when they were called Toms, did you?

Anonymous said...

I agree completely with 9:01 a.m. and will add one more observation that is clearly demonstrated from the video clip of Chowke's outside presser at the water plant when he mentioned "the demographics of Jackson": he thinks he can use his race as an advantage.

Anonymous said...

That’s not the narrative kingfish wants to project.

Versus the narrative that the only thing stopping the Emperor from achieving and demonstrating even a modicum of competency is money.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of the Siemen's deal, I can't imagine it would take the Justice Department long to track down the missing settlement money.

I hope everyone has taken notice that the Fire Stations are not “filling up empty containers” anymore since they were caught using the same water out of the hydrants as the citizens were told not to drink. It goes to show you that these people think the citizens are dumb. The comment earlier about the Corps of Engineers taking the water plant over might be a good idea until it can be run by a private group. As I stated several weeks ago that Premium Waters in Wynndale draws its water feom the City of Jackson but they purify it before bottling it. It seems as if the private sector always has and always will be 10 steps ahead of government in any way shape or form.

Lumumba is angling for a billion-dollar bailout. Or was it two billion?

Anonymous said...

I don't doubt the mayor will prohibit his staff from giving media interviews after this fiasco. It's one way to hide as many shenanigans as possible.

Anonymous said...

This confirms what I’ve suspected all along … that human error is the biggest problem.
Lumumba is the city’s worst enemy and one of the biggest fucking liars on the planet. He will continue to lie and obfuscate, wave his hands around, and claim that the city will forever have a water emergency because the OB Curtis is so old. The truth is nobody wants to work for him or with him because he cannot be trusted.

Unknown said...

The Army Corps of Engineers would have that place humming in no time. Lumumba’s whole agenda depends on its collapse.

I live in Jackson and have for 40 years. My water is clean and I have plenty to eat and cook with and always have. I can afford it. I didn't drink the water but got bottled water I kept in a cooler for decades. Now I have a topline filtering system.
It cracks me up that y'all are all upset about Jackson and drinking water when EPA is NOT closely monitoring it.By the way, my unfiltered water doesn't look like the gory photos( I don't have rusted or lead water pipes) and hasn't throughout the crisis.
I also am amazed how many people don't they can let boiled water cool to bathing temperature or to store or put ice trays.
Is the mayor badly handling his press conferences and the crisis...yes. But, others kept the fact of a problem from the public for decades.

That’s right, 10:25. The Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act were just unnecessary restrictions on the wisdom and noble intentions of the private sector.

It’s ironic that the mayor said if you lose control of the water, you lose control of the city. He has lost control of the water and has lost control of the city. Jackson is a city in crisis: wafer, sewage, garbage, crime.. The basic obligations of the city government are neglected, and will remain so until there is reasonable and responsible government in place. Color isn’t the issue, competence is. At present the government of Jackson is sadly completely incompetent, the mayor particularly.

As a Mississippian, old enough to have gone to Jackson before they moved the MSU/Ole Miss games on campus, and who used to work in Jackson, operative word used to, I am appalled by how far the city of Jackson has decayed and degenerated into a cesspool of violence, corruption and is nothing but a festering, putrescence of hatred and crime. Corruption runs deep all over Mississippi, not just Jackson, and the only reason nobody is willing to stand up and stop the literal crap IE: Sewage Discharge anyone??? that is flowing out of Jackson is that somebody won't be able to get their pound of flesh and collect their payoff. Don't Tax me, don't tax thee, tax the man behind the tree. IF nothing is done, what a shame, HIZOHNNER will ride off in the sunset, with well groomed hair and beard, and his accolades from that prestigious liberal indoctrination camp to rise again all the while claiming to be another victim of whatever. If Jackson was not the capitol of Mississippi, I'd say let the residents of jackson finish what Grant and Sherman did and let it become Chimneyville again. It getting close. But it is the Capitol and as such needs the state to step in. The state or the feds need to take over the Water and Sewer Treatment plants, send collection agents door to door to collect over due water bills. I really don't want to Jackson to be a ward of the state, because then it will be my tax dollars used to pull them out of the hole they have dug them selves in. Having watched, for years, the City of Jackson and its So Called Leadership, both up close and from afar, I really want to say a Pox on all of them, let them rot in the stew they have generated, but unfortunately, the rats among them will spread like the plague if we don't do something soon.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
