The Madison Police Department issued the following statement.
On April 20,2021, at approximately 2:54 PM, an officer of the Madison Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a 2009 Mazda Tribute van on Highway 463, eastbound between Highland Colony Parkway and Interstate 55. The vehicle in question was suspected in involvement in a previous felony shoplifting incident at the Best Buy store in Madison. As the officer was interacting with the driver of the vehicle at the driver’s side window/door of the stopped vehicle, the driver drove off eastbound onto Highway 463 dragging the officer with the vehicle. As the vehicle turned south onto the Interstate 55 onramp, the officer was able to free himself from the outside of the fleeing vehicle. Other officers arriving on the scene gave aid to the officer while other officers pursued the fleeing vehicle south onto Interstate 55.
As the vehicle reached the 105 mile-marker in Ridgeland it
struck the left cement guard rail of the interstate causing two of the pursuing
vehicles to interact with the fleeing vehicle.
The fleeing vehicle came to a stop in the far-left lane of the southbound
interstate at which time the driver was taken into custody. There were no other occupants of the fleeing vehicle
and other than the two police vehicles, no other vehicles were involved in the
traffic crash. The Ridgeland Police
Department as well as the Madison County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the
accident scene.
The officer that was originally dragged by the fleeing
vehicle was transported to the University of MS Medical Center with
non-life-threatening injuries. The
driver of the suspect vehicle was identified as Jerrell T. Staten, age 21, of
Jackson, MS. He was transported to Merit
Health Medical Center in Canton, MS as a precaution to be checked after the
accident. Upon his release he will be
charged with Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer and Felony
Fleeing. Other charges are pending as
the felony shoplifting investigation continues.

This is a very good way to get shot by a policeman.
In fact, I'll even say it's an excellent way to get shot by a policeman.
Hey Jackson THUGS, keep your arses in Jacktown. Madison County won't put up with your BullS#%t!
Last time I checked there are no walls or fences between hind and Madison.. duhhh
Does felony shoplifting involve the theft of >$1000?
Wonder what he got hold of at Best Buy.
12:39 - The shoplifting charge is the least of this Jacksonian's worries; however: "A person convicted of shoplifting merchandise for which the merchant's stated price exceeds Five Hundred Dollars ($ 500.00) shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, punished as provided in Section 97-17-41 for the offense of grand larceny."

Perhaps the Mayor should ask BB to reopen their Jackson store so the people who take don't have to drive so far. It's not stealing, it's "taking."
Why would the officer put his self in a position to be dragged. I am not saying what the perp did was right but the police need to consider personal protection during traffic stops.
I bet he was just about to start college.
"Take what you need" says AOC.
"Last time I checked there are no walls or fences between hind and Madison.. duhhh"
I tried to follow your advice and 'check', but couldn't find hind.
Several years ago an Ole Miss campus cop let himself become far too sure of himself and his authority and reached into the window of a student's truck to turn the key off in an apparent effort to take charge. The student driver drove away dragging the officer to his death. I don't recall what happened to that student or to the SOP for officers on campus but something was lacking when such a situation occurs.
When an officer has the vehicle's tag recorded on a dash cam and the drover's face recorded on the vest cam why would there ever be a hostile confrontation without backup?
11:15 are you serious? "cop let himself become far too sure of himself and his authority and reached into the window of a student's truck to turn the key off in an apparent effort to take charge" The UPD officer was addressing a DUI, doing his job. Just let the drunk go and let the chips fall where they may. Is that what you mean?
Better re-read the statute as it is a felony if $1,000 or more
9:17 The cop should anticipate that the driver will flee. It's the cop's fault for not anticipating that? Now the cops need to anticipate that drivers in this day and age gonna pull a gun and shoot them. In anticipation, they rush to the car with guns drawn and you say police brutality . But I wonder if you are put in harm's way would you run to a smart ass progressive lawyer like yourself or the police you are denigrating here?
I've not been in this situation, but it's my assumption that if I'm at the passenger-side window speaking with the driver and he stomps the gas, I'm probably going to reflexively hold on to the door - otherwise I'm fairly certain part of me will wind up under the rear, right wheel. After about two seconds, I'll probably think clearly enough to push myself away from the vehicle and take the fall, clear of the vehicle.
Seems to me this is what is meant by 'freeing himself from the vehicle'.
9:55. You took my words. Those type of comments do more than explanations.
