Governor Removes Mask Order, Mayor Balks

Governor Tate Reeves ended his mask-requirement order yesterday:

Today, Governor Tate Reeves announced his new comprehensive Safe Recovery order as a one-stop resource for Mississippians as we continue to flatten the curve on new COVID-19 cases.

Throughout this pandemic, one of the top priorities for the Governor has been transparency and keeping Mississippians up-to-date on the state's response. Replacing the Safe Return order and its amendments, Governor Reeves has combined all social distancing measures into one executive order to ensure understanding and keep people better informed.

"I have always tried to stress the important balance of this time: we cannot allow our system to collapse, and we should not use the heavy-hand of government more than it is justified," said Governor Tate Reeves. "We have to tailor our actions to the current threat, and make sure that they do not go beyond what is reasonable."

The Governor made the announcement at today's press briefing, which you can view on our Facebook page here.

Under the new executive order, some social distancing restrictions have been eased as our new COVD-19 case numbers continue to improve. A few of the relaxed restrictions include increasing attendance at outdoor K-12 extracurricular events such as football games to 50% of seating capacity, limiting group gatherings when you are unable to social distance to no more than 20 indoors and 100 outdoors, and requiring masks for schools and close contact businesses like salons and barbershops. The order is in effect until Wednesday, November 11 at 5:00 PM.

You can view the text version of Executive Order No. 1525 here. Signed versions of all executive orders related to COVID-19 can be found on our website at governorreeves.ms.gov/covid-19
The order encourages the use of masks but does not require wearing them except for places such as schools. See H(d) below for more information about the restrictions.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba did not follow the order but instead issued this statement:

Mayor Chokwe Lumumba’s Sixth Amended Stay Safe Jackson Executive Order is still in effect for the Capital City, Jackson.  It is not rendered suspended or unenforceable by the Governor’s latest Executive Order – No. 1525.

nothing says "I am better than you" than limiting general seating capacity in football stadiums to 25% but only limiting enclosed club level seating and suites to 75% capacity, where tater tot and his donors sit... elitist pig! I can't wait to vote him out of office.

What's chucky going to do, write a ticket for not having a mask? I dare him. Has anyone even gotten a citation of sorts for not wearing a mask? What a do nothing, likes to hear his own voice, worthless mayor. Record killings in the streets and he's worried about mask mandated. Whereas he is an idiot.

8:02. can’t hit the nail on the head better. elites- all the rights. regular people- not so much.

8:02 I didn’t not know that. Awesome. We can cram a bunch of people in an enclosed space but can only allow a handful in the wide open outside space. What hypocrites.

I have to give credit to the governor. The Florida governor that is. Much tougher job and he is doing it much better than most.

Please explain this to me: the infection rate has gone down due in part to wearing masks. So now that the rate has declined we stop wearing masks? Nothing about the virus has changed; it is still as prevalent as ever and there is still no vaccine. Please explain.

Just when it looked like we were getting close to average. Does Tater think we are going to avoid the Winter surge just because he can't think more than two weeks ahead?

I understand having to balance the working economy with health restrictions, but there is no downside to a mask mandate other than to the "muh freedumb" crowd who hates doing anything for the public good.

Millsaps College must have a ballgame this weekend.

8:26 Gov. DeSantis and Tate must have gone to the same seminar on epidemics. Both states have average per capita cases, but are third and fourth highest in deaths per capita over the past week. That is a significant disconnect and looks like they are both artificially holding down testing to manipulate the results in their favor.

Go for it Tate, we can get the highest per capita deaths overall if you keep trying. We're already up to 7th and climbing.

Just a thought.....maybe the masks actually did very little. Perhaps it is a placebo, giving the more panic inclined among us some sense of safety as the virus runs its course; and we work on a vaccine that will be 50% effective at best.

I'm fairly certain my entire family had it months ago and never knew it. 3 of the 5 have the antibodies. No one ever felt sick, so no one ever got tested. I know of numerous other similar stories direct from an antibody testing clinic (several under one umbrella actually).

Have you been tested for it and/or the antibodies? If not, go get the antibody test. You will most likely be surprised. The actual infection rate would be staggering if everyone got the antibody test.

Mask don't do shit but make you feel better about something we can do nothing to stop and is picking off the absolute weakest of the heard. I know it sounds cold, but it's the bare bones truth. We are animals like all others at the biological level and are susceptible to a little thinning from disease from time to time. Always have been. Always will be.

If you believe wearing a porous cotton or plastic mask/bandana/neck gaiter is going to keep you from getting the WF, you’re gonna have a hard time.

No where in his declaration does it say you can’t wear a mask. Quite honestly his “Emergency Executive Powers” do not extend forever. At a point in time they run out, especially since the Legislature has meet and Sine Died without specifically granting that authority. If you believe it to be in the best interest of society to wear a mask then by all means wear a mask.

9:36, "Mask don't do shit but make you feel better about something we can do nothing to stop and is picking off the absolute weakest of the heard."

Been to school, son? You just spend all day on conspiracy websites? That's beyond stupid.

BTW, is that 15 year old Football player in Kosciusko the "weakest" of "the heard (sic)?"

Good Lord, son. YOU are the weakest. An IQ below room temperature.

@8:39 I agree completely with your point, though I disagree that masks make any difference. You're perfectly illustrating the hypocrisy and illogic of this issue. If they work so well they should be (and should have been years ago) mandated forever. Even if the flu is not AS bad as this it's still bad and kills thousands of people (including children, which COVID has not). If saving lives/preventing sickness is all the reason government needs to force you to wear a face covering that impedes your breathing, then they should be mandated forever, and anyone that doesn't comply doesn't care about other people.

I've been digging my face mask out of the dash board vent in my car for months. I take it off when I get in the car and rip it off and throw it on the dashboard like a Grey's Anatomy surgery gone terribly bad episode...

“Waaaaah, waaaaaah, I need the government to keep me safe and warm, waaaaah, waaaaaah”

@8:02 a.m. - You didn't know Covid only infects you in the cheap seats despite being allowed to have a more dense population in the clubs and suites? It also doesn't get you in indoor restaurants at 75% capacity? It's such an intelligent disease. If the MS GOP doesn't primary Tater tot, I'm done with them.

Anonymous said...

This is a medical issue that was decided entirely based on politics. Not a well thought out move by Tater and friends.

Anonymous said...

Waaaaah, waaaaaah, waaaaaah, my face is warm and my make believe disease doesn’t like these masks. I don’t care about anyone but myself waaaaah, waaaaaah.

Anonymous said...

If masks do really work why don't those who believe in mask just continue to use them? They can feel safe behind their masks. If your belief in your mask is not that strong then you need to stay at home. If a mask can stop a person from spreading the disease the same mask when worn by a person should stop that person from getting the virus. A mask does not only work in one direction. It either works in both directions or completely fails in both directions.

Wear your mask proudly knowing you are preventing yourself from catching the virus. No one will ask you to remove your mask.

I didnt vote for Tate but I'll vote to reelect him.

Genius move considering our RT value has climbed back to 1 again.

I’d be willing to open the whole thing up and see who is smart enough to take care of themselves. There’s too many people as is so if thousands of people over the age of 50 start dropping dead, maybe it will teach some people the hard way that politicians aren’t the people to listen to.

Chokeway should be worrying about the "Lead Virus" hanging out in the air of Jackson.......but then he don't hang out in da hood with the common folk!!

Mayor "yaps" would be more appropriate.

After all, the lil' Chihuahua pups love him.

9:36AM here addressing 10:15AM....notice that I included the designation of AM versus a lack of any in your address to me. That's just a basic sign of understanding that it matters. Only a fool or slothful soul such as yourself leaves it off. And yes, I have had plenty of schooling and education, more than I could or will ever use, but this is the internet. Does it even matter what you think or I say about that? It is not education that that allows me to spot a classic, self righteous know it all like you though. You ooze it.

And did you call me son? Do you have some tick like Biden....man? That is another sign of the weak minded. Do you say "um" often as well?

I don't know a damn thing about the 15 year old and neither do you. Do you know his medical history or his family's? Do you know his hereditary T cell ability? Do you even know what that is or why it matters? I seriously doubt you do.

Again....it's the weakest of the herd being taken. It is simple biology. It isn't my rule. It happens to deer herds. It happens to monkey troops. It happens to cattle. It happens to people. Eventually, we will be even more able to deal with it as a biological entity. Until then though, it will spread like wildfire and people will die.....the weak and compromised people, in one form or another.

And no, I don't subscribe to any conspiracies. I'm guided by my own beliefs and principles, none of which come from anything I have ever read on the internet.

Madison Central High School can have 50% attendance but Mississippi State is limited to 25 %.

High Schools that play at MSU stadium can have 50 % (Starkville High School)

This is like Tate shutting down the entire 33,000 Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Boneheaded move. Especially with Big Doners able to have 75% in a Suite.

No one ever mentioned how God is our Protector.
If after receiving notice of lifting the Mask Mandate and your decision is to continue wearing the mask, do so. If your decision is to stop wearing your mask, do so.
It has been placed rock solid that you can in so many words do as you please, but once again, the name calling is just ridiculous.
The City of Jackson Mayor is not an idiot, he is a person just as we all are.

I do not rely on you idiots or Reeves for accurate information re how to protect myself and my family from Covid.

Masks keep YOU from spreading the virus.

I don't know why it's so difficult to understand that masks don't protect you from getting the virus, they keep you from giving the virus to others and limiting the amount of droplets you inhale.

9:36am I'm glad you and your family had mild cases. I wonder how many you infected that didn't or who died.

Hope Hicks didn't necessarily give it to the President and First Lady, she is just the first to show symptoms. All three may have gotten it from an asymptomatic person( someone who feels fine). At least, two senators ( Tillis and Lee), Kellyanne Conway, and several reporters in the Rose Garden for the Supreme Court appointee announcement are all positive and quarantined. They all interacted with others. All had tested negative with the fast test that is only 85% accurate. See the problem yet?

Your ignorance is driving the politics which is the basis of the Governors decision. It should be science and common sense.

It is why we have the most cases in the World and the most deaths per capita.

Young people with ZERO underlying conditions have died. We don't know why. It could be they had more or repeated exposure. It could be that on that day, their immune system didn't response as well for some reason.

If dying and causing others to die is " just a part of life and no big deal" , then don't wear a seat belt, ignore all " reduce speed" signs and go 20 to 40 mph over the speed limit while texting. Since you are irresponsible about wearing a mask, you might as well be consistent. You might not kill someone else and possibly survive.

You have inconsistent and convenient ethics which is to say, you are moral only when it suits you.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
