Stokes goes too far
Airport makes more money but traffic falls.
Airports. Did someone mention Airports? The Jackson Municipal Airport popped up in the news this week as the Jackson City Council learned that Senator Josh Harkins will file a bill in the 2016 session of the Mississippi Legislature that will alter the governing board of the airport. The airport is currently governed by a board of five commissioners appointed by the city of Jackson. The bill will replace that board with a seven-member board representing Hinds, Madison, and Rankin Counties. Josh would appoint the members.
Make no mistake, this fight is going to be a battle royale. However, JJ is going to provide a snapshot of the current state of the airport as presented to the commissioners earlier this month. Most of the loudmouths opining on both sides of the issue have no clue as to what goes on at the airport. They should read the rest of this post if they want to learn.

Star Wars blast from the past
Does anyone remember this Star Wars trailer? First one ever and it was not exactly polished. Speaking of movies, has anyone noticed problems at Malco? Went last week to a 9:00 PM show. No cokes or other soft drinks. Popcorn stations were out of butter and popcorn salt. One kid running a cash register while others were just walking around doing whatever. Several other people said they experienced the same problems on other nights. It was the nicest theatre in the area. Hope it is not going down.
Update on Renaissance vandalism and prosecution
Renaissance developer Andrew Mattiace issued this statement today:
Changing demographics are a problem. Mayor agrees.
Emails between Ridgeland officials and their constituents show several exchanges over the changing racial composition of Ridgeland. Several Ridgeland residents complained about "Ridgeland school demographics" and the city becoming the "new Northeast Jackson". One email even called the demographics at Anne Smith Elementary School "a problem". Mayor Gene McGee wrote "You are so right" in a response to that particular email. The emails are posted below.
Rick Cleveland slams Manning "story"
Many of you are no doubt familiar with a website called The Onion, which produces satirical, often hilarious, “news” stories. I have no problem with The Onion. It sometimes makes me laugh.
Our problem these days is differentiating between The Onion and the countless news outlets, which are serving up ever-increasing volumes of blather and babble that sometimes read like satire but are not.
Exhibit A: An Al Jazeera report last weekend that purported Peyton Manning used HGH, a hormone banned by the NFL, to recover from a career threatening neck injury in 2011.

Can't have anything nice around here.
Update: Ridgeland PD said suspect is held on a $2,500 written bond. He is bound over to grand jury. The crime will be prosecuted as a felony due to the dollar amount. He has not been arrested before by JPD. He was arrested in September for doing the same thing to the horse statues in front of P.F. Chang's. The suspect is from Jackson.
Original post:
Can't have anything nice in this area. Some punk decided to go knock the hooves off of the horse statues that populate the fountain at the Renaissance at Colony Park. A man allegedly used a sledgehammer to attack the horse statues and Italian fountain. Ridgeland Police were called to the scene at 6:00 AM yesterday and charged Charles Branch with malicious mischief. The black male is thirty years old. He is currently a resident of the Madison County jail. It is not known what the bond for Branch is. JJ is working to obtain his identity and more information. See the damage for yourself. Free-lance photographer Rick Guy shot these photos for JJ.
Clinton raising money for rifles
The City of Clinton issued the following press release:
HUD sues Ridgeland; claims city trying to force out minorities
HUD accused Ridgeland of trying to force minorities to leave the city in a complaint served on Ridgeland December 4. The complaint paints a picture of a city concerned by the "changing demographics" of Southeast Ridgeland and Ridgeland public schools. The city tried to use several tactics to change the nature of Southeast Ridgeland. Needless to say, HUD noticed such efforts and seeks to bring the hammer down on Ridgeland.
MHP: 5 deaths, 85 DUI's, 250 crashes
The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued the following statement on its Christmas enforcement program results:
What story is told by these pictures?
Correction: >This post contained two pictures of Mr. Shackelford and a female. JJ misidentified her as Mrs. Thomas. JJ has other pictures of Mrs. Thomas and the women are similar in features. Apologies to Lindsey Thomas and Mr. Shackelford. The removal of the pictures obviously changes the nature of the story. We make a mistake on this website, we own up to it and don't bury it on the bottom of page B-18 in fine print.
Journalistus Maximus Jerry Mitchell reported that Madison County Constable Matt Shackleford might have engaged in some questionable behavior. The story appeared on the front page of the Sunday edition of the Clarion-Ledger. The article included a picture of the constable holding up a funny-looking plant. It is not known if he is indeed a horticulturist or has an affinity for plants of the distinctive green-leaf variety. The story then questioned his actions and relationship with the wife of Lindsey Kirkland Thomas. Mr. Shackelford arrested Raymond Ethan Thomas after Mrs. Thomas filed charges against him. The constable later arrested Mr. Thomas for allegedly stalking him as well. The charges were later dismissed or remanded. The couple is seeking a divorce. Mr. Mitchell only posted one picture in his article. However, JJ obtained more pictures which may tell the Rest of the story.

Some people are never satisfied

Daniel Henninger muses whether Christmas is passing away in the Wall Street Journal:
This is the year Christmas died as a public event in the United States.
Who is the good guy?
Award-winning reporter Jerry Mitchell delved into the Ethan Thomas drama in Madison County on the front pages of the Clarion-Ledger this morning. It seems that Constable Matt Shackleford is ensnared in the mess as he might have gotten a little too close to the wife of Mr. Thomas and has an interesting little green plant in his home as well. The Thomases have filed for divorce in Madison County. Mr. Mitchell writes:

The Board refused to pay them, while Mr. Warnock threatened to sue if they are not paid (letter posted below). Bert on the comeback trail
Here are the latest updates on Berrrrrrrrrrt Case.
Rick Cleveland: The last season
The first time Stuart Stevens and his dad went to a Sugar Bowl it snowed. This was New Year's Day 1964. Stuart Stevens was 11 and a dyed-in-red-and-blue Ole Miss Rebel.
That Sugar Bowl matched the Rebels against Alabama. Bear Bryant coached Alabama. John Vaught coached Ole Miss. The Bear suspended star quarterback Joe Namath. But Bama, quarterbacked by future Ole Miss coach Steve Sloan, won anyway, 12-7, on four field goals and seemingly countless Ole Miss turnovers. The game was played outdoors, as football was meant to be played, at Tulane Stadium (heaven rest its soul, and it did have soul).
Young Stuart Stevens, cold and bitterly disappointed, cried. His dad, Jackson lawyer Phineas Stevens, comforted him. It is one of the really poignant scenes in Stuart's beautifully written book, The Last Season (Knopf, 2015).

Bishop claims Election Commissioner tampered with ballots
Karl Banks may have started a fight over his loss in court but David Bishop didn't mind hitting him back today as he filed a response in Madison County Circuit Court today. You know the story. Madison County District 4 Supervisor and 32-year incumbent Karl Banks lost by two votes to challenger David Bishop. Banks filed a lawsuit in court that seeks to restore several absentee and affidavit ballots to the election results that oddly enough would make him the winner.

The Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance recommended that the Mississippi Supreme Court remove Madison Justice Court judge Bill Weisenberger from the bench. Oddly enough, Mr. Weisenberger would leave office at the end of the year anyway. The Commission also asked the court to fine the judge $1,000 and require him to pay $5,918. The punishments are related several events that occurred at the Canton Flea Market in 2014. The details are published below in a press release and findings issued by the Commission.

More Nobodies sue Ashley Madison
20 Mississippi John Does joined as plaintiffs a lawsuit against Ashley Madison in U.S. District Court last November. They seek an unspecified amount of punitive damages. The original lawsuit was filed by a John Doe plaintiff in September. All plaintiffs admitted they created user profiles on Ashley Madison and submitted pictures of themselves. Several claimed they paid the website a $19.00 fee to delete their information when they decided to quit using the service. The lawsuit reveals the true legacy of Ashley Madison- broken homes, sordid blackmail attempts, and what was in reality, an online scam.

More and more facts about the San Bernardino terrorist attack continue to come out as law enforcement officials and the media do their jobs. An American citizen hooked up with the wrong people, took a trip, came back with a terrorist wife, and we know the rest of the murderous story. Liberals jumped quickly out the gate blaming the NRA and racism for what took place last week. It's all about not letting a crisis go to waste, you see. However, if we are going to play the blame game, there is indeed one group who is morally culpable for what took place last week and has blood on its intellectual hands: the ACLU.

Rick Cleveland: Alcorn wins by breaking the glass
When Alcorn State first offered its head football coaching job to Jay Hopson in April of 2012, he turned it down. What has happened since should be a book and then a movie.
Problem is, even Hollywood might consider the story a bit inconceivable.
The Alcorn football program was a train wreck. The previous year's team had won just one conference game. Seven or eight of the top returning players had decided not to return. Fan support? Fewer than 500 fans had shown up for Alcorn's final home game in 2011.

This is quite a bit of football success for one small state. It's not unprecedented, but it is rather remarkable.
Smart football people often correctly say quarterbacks get too much credit for a team's success and too much blame for a team's failure. So let's put it this way: You can't blame Dak Prescott, Chad Kelly or Nick Mullens for much at all this season. They do deserve lots and lots of credit.

Stupid crook of the day.
This is what happens when someone lives in the most corrupt state in America. You grow up seeing everyone on the take and just assume when you go out of state that everyone else is on the take as well. A Vicksburg drug dealer found out the old saying about "assume" is true as well. Our friend Carol Robinson reported in Al.com:

Missouri native Kristy Mitchell was murdered in the parking lot of Logan's on County Line Road last night. The suspect allegedly murdered another woman, and went on a shooting spree that started in Jackson and ended in Ridgeland. Few people here probably knew Mrs. Mitchell. She was a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. Her Facebook profile shows she loved her bassett hound and wasn't afraid to take the ice bucket challenge with her grandchildren last year. Police euthanize five dogs in Gay Street attack
Correction: The story posted below has been corrected. The original post stated the home and dog owner was Hubbard Saunders of Douglas Street. The actual owner was Perry Richardson and the attack was on Gay Street. Mr. Saunders' name was posted after talking to JPD. However, JJ later learned the information was wrong. Mr. Saunders is not connected to this story at all. JJ apologizes to Mr. Saunders. Mistakes will be made but this website has no problem owning up to them. Comments with his name will be removed.
JPD euthanized five pit bulls and pit bull mixed-breed dogs after they attacked a homeowner and his friend late on October 1. JPD said the attack took place on Gay Street in Northeast Jackson. The homeowner was Perry Richardson. Police sources say the man was chewed up so badly that he resembled a homicide victim. The dogs then turned on the owner when he tried to restrain them. Police were called to the residence. One police officer said the dogs "were killing machines. They were not dogs." JPD seized the dogs and later put them down. This was the second attack by the dogs in six months. A neighbor stated in an email sent to JJ:

The main problem with K-12 public school education may not be the lack of funding. It's more likely the lack of competition. Public schools are government monopolies. Monopolies are protected from competition. They don't have to innovate to improve to survive. So they don't. They just get ever more bureaucratic and insular. The public school monopoly justifies its existence by its mission: to educate our children. The measure of its effectiveness is how much money it spends, not how well it prepares our children. Spending for Mississippi's public schools has increased every year for 20 years. ACT scores have flat lined for 20 years.

And Mikal fires back at the feds
Texas superlawyer Mikal Watts didn't take his indictment lying down but fired back at the U.S. Attorney with his own press release that is posted below. Read it for yourself.
Feds indict superlawyer Mikal Watts, brother, and others in BP fraud. Who is the Jackson attorney?
Updated 11:30 AM: U.S. Attorney press release included in post.
A federal grand jury indicted Mikal Watts, his brother David Watts, Greg Warren, Wynter Lee, and several other defendants for allegedly trying to use fraud to gain a share of the BP settlement proceeds arising from the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The indictment also alleges that Watts used an attorney in Jackson to further the fraud. The indictment states:
Hunter McGee charged with sexual exploitation of minor.
Hinds County deputies charged Jackson resident Barton Hunter McGee with sexual exploitation of a minor, sexual battery, and possession of marijuana on October 2. Mr. McGee is 43 years old and lives on Taylor Street in Jackson. He is currently free on bond. Judge Priester set bond at $33,000 for the sexual exploitation charge and $50,000 for the sexual batter charge.
BP & Vietnamese fishermen filed fraud lawsuits against Watts
BP alleged Texas superlawyer Mikal Watts committed fraud in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in New Orleans in 2013. The oil company charged that Mr. Watts attempted to defraud the BP claims process as he stated that he represented over 44,000 clients and made other false statements. Some of the choice allegations are:
Superlawyer Mikal Watts will be indicted in Mississippi today on phony BP claims.
Update: Yup, Watts is coming to Gulfport.

NAEP: Mississippi fourth-grade reading scores improve, "buck" national trend.
The Mississippi Department of Education issued the following press release:
Jackson seeks to create entertainment district.
Will bars be able to one day operate 24/7 in downtown Jackson? The City of Jackson will ask the Department of Revenue to designate a certain areas of downtown as a resort area and entertainment district. The request came before the City Council's Planning and Zoning Committee Monday. The committee did not vote on the request but decided to study creating the boundaries of a proposed entertainment district and adopting a long-range plan for downtown Jackson. The city has never adopted such a plan. Downtown Jackson Partners will work with the city in creating the long-range plan.
No Comment: Larita edition
This is an actual motion that still floats around on the agenda for the Planning and Zoning Committee for the Jackson City Council. You can't make this up.

Ole Miss FOOD FIGHT!!!
Daily Mississippi Opinion Editor wants to impeach an Ole Miss Student Senator for defending the Mississippi state flag. Canton's Sierre Mannie filed a petition on Change.org requests Ole Miss remove Andrew Soper from his position as a member of the University of Mississippi Student Senate. Mr. Soper circulated a petition last week defending the state flag. The petition states:
Klansmen charged with bringing weapons to Ole Miss flag rally
Scumbags gonna scumbag. The FBI arrested Kyler Campbell and Virgil Dennison for possessing two shotguns on the Ole Miss campus. The two men protested the vote to remove the state flag on October 22. They were escorted back to their vehicle by University PD. The police saw two shotguns in Campbell's truck and things went downhill from there for our two klukkers. It didn't help that "Campbell had pending felony charges". The affidavit posted below tells the whole story.

Hinds County justice: Get high, kill someone, go home.
A drunk driver who killed a man and injured a paramedic will stay out of jail and spend a few years at home under house arrest. Hinds County Circuit Judge Bill Gowan sentenced Robert Lee Howard, Jr. to 25 years in prison for one count of Aggravated DUI (Death) and another count of Aggravated DUI (injury) but suspended the entire prison sentence on October 20. Howard will serve five years of conditional post-release supervised probation for five years and then serve non-reporting probation for 15 years. Howard is 45 years old and a resident of Jackson.
OUCH!!!
Just someone wakeboarding in the parking lot at LSU last night. What could possibly go wrong?
Louisiana constitution protects public schools.... and decimates public universities.
Louisiana provides a horrifying glimpse at what can happen when something is protected in the state constitution. Unfortunately for Mississippi, too few people want to open their eyes and get that glimpse. The idea of looking at what happened to other states that placed public schools into a budget lockbox has rarely entered the current debate over Initiative 42. Such a self-absorbed lot, are we. The Louisiana constitution "protects" secondary and public education - at the expense of everything else. Supporters of historically black colleges and even LSU cringe every time there is a budget crunch as higher education suffers while public schools are shielded from budget cuts. The Louisiana constitution states:

The players of Scooba got into a brawl during a football game last week:
Trying to find a future in the Delta.
Washington ____ reporter Chico Harlan paid another visit to the Delta as he published another story on Mississippi poverty in the newspaper's Lost Opportunity in the Deep South series:
The day of his high school graduation, like so many of the days before, began with chaos. Ruleville Central had pledged to lock its front doors an hour before the ceremony to prevent a crowd overflow, and Jadareous Davis was still at his grandmother’s home six miles up the road, time slipping away. Davis scanned through his mental checklist. Shoes? His older brother hadn’t yet swung by to drop off a pair. Bow tie? Maybe he could borrow one from a neighbor. Pants? Davis wasn’t even sure whether the dress code mandated black or brown, and he called a friend for help.

War update: British attack French, Krauts bomb England
JJ is posting old front pages of the Jackson Daily News from the WWII
era to give readers an idea of what 1940 readers read on a daily basis
in Jackson. The only way they received their news was through the radio
or newspaper. There was the Movietone news at the theater but it was
somewhat dated when it arrived at the bijou. Most readers have either
watched programs or read books
about the Second World War. However, tv and books do not give one a
true feel for how it was to live back then and experience war news as
part of one's daily life. The JDN
front pages as the war seems more alive as each front page brought a
daily dose of news that seems surreal today. It is a different way of
looking at history and one that I think the reader will enjoy.

The city of Jackson issued the following press release:
Travelstead faces up to 40 years in prison
Attorney General Jim Hood issued the following press release:
Foote wants to post zoning apps and agendas online.
Jackson Ward 1 City Councilman Ashby Foote proposed placing all zoning applications on the city website within 72 hours after they are submitted to the city. He also proposed placing all agendas for the Planning and Zoning Commission on the city website as well, 72 hours before a commission meeting. Mr. Foote submitted the proposal as a resolution. The resolution was submitted to the city attorney so it could be re-drafted as a proposed ordinance or order. The Planning Committee will address the proposal next week.

Truth in humor
I found the South Park episode about Whole Foods coming to town. It is posted below and well, there is a great deal of truth to this parody.
Priester was going to release suspect in Kendrick murder. Prosecution: What is a felony-murder rule?
Judge Melvin Priester, Sr. reduced the bond for Lauren Shell Blackwell to $500 for the charge of Capital Murder in the death of 81 year-old Lee Kendrick at a preliminary hearing last Monday. The Pearl resident was shot to death in an a vacant apartment at Cedarstone Apartments in Northeast Jackson on August 31. Blackwell was denied bond when first charged with murder and auto theft. Judge Priester also granted bond of $500 for the auto theft charge. He sought to release her on her own recognizance but awarded a bond upon a request from defense attorneys. JJ obtained a copy of the hearing transcript. The transcript gives a clearer picture of what did... and didn't take place in the courtroom that day.

The Murrah High School Drum Corps shows some serious chops last week:
Raymond Ethan Thomas is arrested again
Our favorite psycho just can't stay out of trouble, can he?
You can't make this up.
I went to City Hall in Jackson and watched the City Council in action. There was nothing to remind one of the days of Stokes and Louis Armstrong. Stamps, Priester, Foote, and Hendrix were present. However, what I saw made me wonder if the city council is actually capable of governing Jackson. Look at this picture:
Ridgeland paid $22,500 to company to monitor social media.
The City of Ridgeland paid $22,500 to Edgetheory, LLC from October 2013 to December 2014. Edgetheory was formerly Leadify, LLC. Ridgeland hired the company to monitor social media conversations about Ridgeland and take "ownership" of those social media conversations. Edgetheory also provided "engagement monitoring". The Madison County Journal reported in October 2013:

Priester reduces bond to $1,000 in Kendrick murder.
Hinds County Court Judge Melvin Priester, Sr. reduced the bond of Loren Shell Blackwell to $1,000 today at a preliminary hearing. JPD charged her and Walter Lee Young with capital murder in the death of Lee Kendrick.
PEER on education: Perfumed princes get more money, teachers get less.
The PEER Committee issued a report last week that stated Mississippi spent more money on administrators and contractors but less money on instruction since 2005. In other words, the generals took care of themselves while the troops suffered on the battlefield for lack of support.

Trollfest '09
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.
Note: Security provided by INS.
Trollfest '07
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both will entitle you to free drinks.Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required, just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '07 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.
