Carjacker indicted
The hoodlum who carjacked the wife of Merrida Coxwell was indicted for the crime last month. A Hinds County grand jury indicted John Gregory Rollins for carjacking Tara Coxwell at the Car Care Clinic on I-55 North on March 8. The indictment also seeks to classify him as a habitual offender. Rollins is a participant in the Hinds County Catch & Release Program:

Legislative leaders brought in an outside expert from the Tax Foundation to push the theory that Mississippi needs to make its business taxes more competitive. She argues lower business taxes, offset by higher user fees, property taxes and expanded sales taxes, will make Mississippi more competitive for business and jobs.
While this approach may make the state more business tax competitive, there is no evidence it will result in more business growth and jobs. Taxes are just one of the many factors businesses consider when looking to expand or open new locations. Market size, wealth, competition and growth prospects; workforce size, skills, wage levels, and future availability; transportation and utilities access and costs; quality of schools and other lifestyle amenities; incentives; and other factors are equally if not more important than business taxes.

Ben Allen to D.A.: Do your own homework
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith asked for everything, including the kitchen sink and all indoor plumbing, from Ben Allen, his lawyer, Kamikaze, Downtown Jackson Partners, and other lawyers in a bizarre motion for discovery that was filed on October 20 in State v. Benjamin Allen, III. A grand jury indicted the DJP Executive Director in March for ten counts of fraud and embezzlement. The grand jury also indicted two employees of the State Auditor for allegedly obstructing the investigation of Mr. Allen. However, Mr. Allen and his lawyer, Merrida Coxwell, fired right back at the District Attorney in a response that was filed Monday.
There is NO shooter at UMMC.
UMMC sent out by mistake an active shooter alert. There is no active shooter. Needless to say, it freaked out more than a few people as JJ got several text messages from readers who thought it was real.

Troopers acquitted
The NHTSA offers grants to law enforcement agencies for DUI enforcement. The grant pays troopers to work DUI enforcement on their off days. Such an arrangement has several benefits. The troopers have an opportunity to earn more money. The Mississippi Highway Patrol gets to put more troopers in the field to arrest drunk drivers at no extra cost.

DPS stonewalls again
The Mississippi Department of refuses to answer whether Penny Corn is still employed at the agency. Ms. Corn served as the Grants Director at the Office of Homeland Security at DPS. DPS settled a sex discrimination with Ms. Corn for $75,000 in April. Numerous sources at DPS informed JJ that Ms. Corn was terminated last week. JJ submitted the following public records request to Communications Director Warren Strain last week:

Savages
A man was shot and then beaten at a convenience store on McDowell Road Monday. The video posted below shows two men approaching another man standing outside of the store. Another man gets out of his car, walks up to the victim, and then shoots him several times. The trio of thugs then chase down the victim and begin to kick him while he is on the ground. JPD is looking for the suspects.

The Clarion-Ledger laid off three reporters and three editors today. The identities are not known.
Update (10/26/2016): Here is the list: Sherry Lucas, Mollie Bryant, David Bean, Daniel Pauling, Ben Kelly, and Ralph Baldwin. Not who I would've cut but that is just me. ;-) Best wishes to these guys and hope they find something worthy of their talents and experience.
Kelly Williams: Wait for the Thud
Obamacare and Mississippi Power’s Kemper County Lignite Plant are a lot alike. Both are big expensive over-hyped complicated unworkable government experiments. Both are destructive. The Chicago Tribune (an unlikely critic) recently wrote this about Obamacare: “… it flunked Economics 101 and Human Nature 101.” It explains why and concludes with: “The next President and Congress either reckon with Obamacare’s failures or … wait for the thud.”
Update from court
Judge Larry Roberts upholds the three indictments against Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith. Judge Roberts rejected a motion to disqualify attorney Jim Waide from representing the D. A. Judge Roberts also refused to dismiss the three-count indictment against the District Attorney and a two-count indictment against Assistant District Attorney Jamie McBride. The court quashed a subpoena issued against Judge Jeff Weill's staff attorney as well.

D.A. goes to war with Judge Weill

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith subpoenaed Circuit Judge Jeff Weill's staff attorney to appear at a hearing scheduled to take place this morning in State v. Robert Shuler Smith. However, Kate Steiner filed a motion to quash the subpoena yesterday. Special Circuit Judge Larry Roberts will preside over the hearing today.

The Mayor sues Bracey for defamation
Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber responded to a sexual harassment lawsuit with both barrels blazing today. Mayor Yarber answered Kimberly Bracey's federal complaint and then filed a counterclaim against her for defamation. Mrs. Bracey was Mayor Yarber's executive assistant and is married to Santore Bracey.
Is the D.A. grandstanding or is he a victim?
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith is trying to keep a transcripts where he repeatedly uses the "N" word out of court. Mr. Smith included several transcripts of recordings between him and former Assistant District Attorney Ivon Johnson in a motion to exclude tapes and transcripts that he filed last week. A grand jury indicted the District Attorney last month for three counts of improperly helping criminal defendants. However, the A.G. accused the D.A. of grandstanding with the transcripts.

These questions popped up as I read a story in The Commercial Dispatch. While the story was about universities providing emotionally safe places for students, it made me wonder about safe places for people of all ages in our communities.
