Update: MDOC reponded to a JJ inquiry regarding whether it would revoke Carter's probation with this statement: "We have asked that a hold be placed on this offender for probation violation." MDOC now wants Carter. It remains to be seen if the Hinds County District Attorney will revive the armed robbery charge that was remanded to file. Question for Mr. Carter: How does it feel to be so popular? Flowood wants you, MDOC wants you, even Robert Schuler Smith might want you.

Judge John Emfinger sentenced Blair and Michael Porter to 15 years in jail with 10 years suspended. They must register as sex offenders and be placed under supervised probation for five years upon release. They will be electronically monitored during probation. They will serve day for day while in prison. The DA first recommended 7 years but the family of the victim asked for 5 years in jail. The video of the hearing is posted below.
Police reports show how sick the Porter case really is.

The decision was made to publish this post for several reasons. A horrible crime took place. However, the details of these crimes are usually kept secret for obvious reasons. Every measure was taken to redact information that might identify the child or her family. Former WLBT News Director Dennis Smith was consulted. He read the report and gave some very welcome advice. It's a story that needs to be told and should be reported. The reports are not for the squeamish, but people need to see exactly how these crimes take place. They also need to see the lengths to which brainwashed victims will go to to protect the perps.
Former Ridgeland High School softball coaches Blair and Michael Porter pleaded guilty to one count each of sexual battery of a child. The child was a student they had known since she was in eighth grade and was a 15 year-old member of the team when the crime took place. The Porters are husband and wife.
Posted below is the raw police report for the investigation. There is no way to sugarcoat it. The material is disgusting and sickening in nature. It shows how two coaches exploited a young girl. They both performed sexual acts with her. They took a young girl and ruined her life. Law enforcement sources said the victim was very uncooperative. The word "love" was used several times. They even tried to blame her when caught. What stopped them was a parent who dared to be a parent and not take her child's word as gospel truth. The parents demanded answers and would not stop seeking justice until it was served.

Update: The words "debacle" and "bailout" were used by the Clarion-Ledger and Madison County Journal about in their headlines about the bill. Parkway South has not defaulted on the TIF bonds.The Galleria TIF has not failed and is producing. The county is restructuring the bonds so as to match payments with revenue. The TIF included tax-exempt property, which obviously is self-defeating. The original post was based upon what was reported in the two newspapers. More information will be added if it becomes available. County sources said county officials did not ask for the legislation nor did anyone ask the legislature to draft the bill.

Two former Ridgeland softball coaches will plead guilty tomorrow in Madison County Circuit Court. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 1:00 Pm. They were indicted last year for sexual battery of a minor.
The Fondren Park fracas and ruffled feathers
The post about the shooting in Fondren Park ten days ago ruffled some feathers among those who use the Nextdoor app. Its a great app and a valuable tool for many neighborhoods as it allows neighbors to get important information out quickly to their community. Some people were irritated and accused me of unethical conduct for reporting messages posted on the Nextdoor application that were about the Firefight in Fondren. One person even accused me of violating the rules of Nextdoor and exploiting the incident to generate traffic for more ads. An explanation for that post is in order.

Comparing Apples to Pineapples to Oranges
How does the processing of criminals in Hinds County compare to other counties? Defenders of the status quo in Hinds County argue it is not reasonable to compare Hinds to Rankin or Madison as there are much more violent crimes in Hinds even on a percentage basis. Its a fair point to make and at times is a case of comparing apples to pineapples. However, there is one county where a more fair comparison can be made.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Schuler Smith responded to an earlier post about the Melvin Potts prosecution in an interview with WLBT. Melvin Potts was indicted on February 5, 2013 for armed robbery with a gun. He was arrested for allegedly killing JSU professor Dr. Garrick Shelton in May 2014. His Hinds County case was continued no less than eight times while he goes to trial in Madison County nine months after his arrest. WLBT reported:

A bill banning the practice of setting minimum prices for contact lenses died in committee this week. 1-800-Contacts pushed SB #2016 after leading contact lens manufacturer Johnson & Johnson established a "floor price" for the sale of its contact lens to patients. The bill was opposed by the state Optometrists Association and multiple ophthalmologist from around the state. 1-800-Contacts is based in Utah. The company is the Goliath of the online contact lens industry as it enjoys over a 70% market share.

Leigh Ann Ward's killer is free.
Ethan Van Sice is no longer in jail. MDOC granted "earned supervised release" status to Ethan Van Sice on October 3, 2014. Van Sice was convicted of vehicular homicide in February 2012 for the death of MRA teacher Leigh Anne Ward in 2010. He only served 2 1/2 years of a six-year prison term.

A suspect is in custody for a counterfeit check case from last week in Mountain Brook Village. A counterfeit check was used to make a $13,000 purchase on Jan. 27 in the 2800 block of Cahaba Road. Raymond Ethan Thomas, age 38 of Ridgeland, Mississippi, was arrested on Jan. 30 for first-degree theft and possession of a forged instrument. He is now in custody at Jefferson County Jail.Jail records show he is no longer in custody.

A Tale of Two Prosecutions
Melvin Potts goes on trial February 23 in Madison County for first degree murder and auto theft. The indictment charges he killed Dr. Garrick Shelton on May 21, 2014 and stole his car. Remember that date. Dr.
Shelton was a professor and Department Chair at Jackson State University. He was stabbed to death. However, the twenty-one year-old Potts is also a participant in the Hinds County catch & release program.
Bobo to plead guilty.
Josh Bobo entered a petition to plead guilty to one count of unarmed carjacking and one count of simple robbery on December 29, 2014. A grand jury indicted him for carjacking and armed robbery last September for a violent rampage that took place at the Ridgeland Wal-Mart in January 2014. District Attorney Michael Guest recommended Mr. Bobo be incarcerated for 15 years with 5 years suspended. The petition and indictment are posted below.

Young trial postponed.
The trial for Tommy Young was postponed from today until May 18, 2015 by Judge Bill Gowan. The continuance was granted since Mr. Young claimed he got a new attorney and needed more time to prepare for trial. He is now represented by Faye Peterson. His previous barrister was Dennis Sweet, IV. Mr. Young faces eight counts of armed robbery, carjacking, and aggravated assault. This is the second time his trial has been postponed. He was indicted in March 2013. Judge Gowan revoked his bond on December 12, 2014 after he did not appear for a hearing in court.

The legislative fight over the MAEP initiative grown pretty hot at times as Republicans added an additional amendment to the ballot. Needless to say, the measure did not go over well with Democrats. Supporters of a an initiative to "fully fund" education under the MAEP formula obtained enough signatures to place the proposed amendment on the ballot. However, the law allows the legislature to place alternate amendments on the ballot as well. The Democrats had a few things to say about the vote:
