State Bean-Counter Shad White issued the following statement.
Today, State Auditor Shad White announced the arrest of Former Guntown Alderman William Daniel Davis and his cousin, former Public Works Operator Robert Lee Davis, for alleged fraud or embezzlement in public office.
Between October and November 2024, the pair allegedly conspired to defraud the City of Guntown through billing the city for the installation of a residential sewage line at a private residence belonging to Daniel Davis, causing a loss of $9,950.
“Our team at the State Auditor’s office has zero tolerance for those who think it is acceptable to steal taxpayer dollars,” said State Auditor Shad White. “We will continue to do everything in our power to find individuals who think they can get away with taking money from the taxpayers of Mississippi.”
William Daniel Davis and Robert Lee Davis each face up to 10 years in prison and $5,000 in fines if convicted. All persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

“Guntown”. I thought you were talking about Jackson
I think they spent most of that on food and beer!
Damn Kingfish, I am surprised the Senator from Guntown, The Chad, has not already put out a lengthy statement on the situation! I am sure he will take credit for the bust and will have to wrastle shad, with a little "s", on who gets the credit.
Excellent!! Good work Shad and others at your office!
All across America: eliminate all grift.
Couple of stereotypical fat, dumb-looking Mississippi inbreds.
I have no problem with this if all residents get the same opportunity and treatment.
Y’all can’t do this shigity in small towns where eyes are always looking except when a crime on person is committed, then they don’t see or say shit!
Ol' baws didn't spend it o gym memberships
It will require liposuction to claw back this corruption.
I’m all for rooting out corruption, and there’s plenty of it in Mississippi. However, I can’t help but wonder how much it cost to investigate $9,950 of “fraud or embezzlement.” I’m not saying they shouldn’t be prosecuted, but what’s the ROI on this one? Is it possible that there is greater corruption the esteemed auditor could be (should be) pursuing? I don’t know. Maybe this was the last of it and the state is pure as snow now. So many of these press releases from White are just… underwhelming.
Ain't that the truth. No branches on those family trees.
"Low hanging fruit" comment in 3, 2, 1.
7:32, the ROI on this is not as simple as subtracting the investigative costs from the recovery. It’s the deterrence - if Shad only went after big fish, there would be a lot more little fish committing financial crimes.
Shad has fallen mighty low to go about busting Cabbage Patch Kids.
@10:38 you ain’t gotta worry about him getting big fish. He covered for all the big fish. Daddy pheeel would put bta if he didn’t.
"...billing the city for the installation of a residential sewage line at a private residence...causing a loss of $9,950." Is this akin to trying to use public funding for an access road that extends your neighborhood entrance into a shopping area traffic light?
Teddy Roosevelt once said when they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer “Present” or “Not Guilty”. That statement rings very true, “allegedly” for the Senator from Guntown, whom I’m sure knows these guys well. Hide your wives, daughters and wallet.
@7:32 Fair point. So you are saying that we should never investigate a murder. Because it costs money to investigate, and then more money to house the murderer. Yet, because the victim can never be brought back to life their is no financial gain. So all murder investigations are losing propositions financially.
