Country music legend David Allen Coe passed on the great honky tonk up in the sky. He was 86 years old. To say he was controversial is an understatement as David Allen Coe defined controversy with his rather, um, colorful songwriting. He was truly someone who DGAF.
Those who attended his shows soon learned it was a good idea to dress cool as his contract required the venue to turn off the air conditioning. Something about he got used to living without it in prison. You might see a great show (Hal & Mal's) or see him play six songs (Texas Dance Club) or three songs (Fire) before storming off the stage, ending the show. There were no refunds. A David Allen Coe wouldn't even make it to the recording studio in today's world of bro-country and corporate country.

Whoop-te-doo. He wrote like 2 good songs.
Outlaw living is hard, and outlaw country music was the best, RIP.
If That Aint Country I'll Kiss Your A$$!
I liked his music so much. His "perfect country song" is a hoot. RIP
From the song You Never Even Call Me By My Name...
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song and he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country & western song because he hadn’t said anything at all about mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, or getting’ drunk
Well he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me.
And after reading it, I realized that my friend had written the perfect country & western song and I felt obliged to include it on this album.
The last verse goes like this here:
Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train
Totally disrespectful, Kingfish, for you to type, "Finally passed away". He was an artist of his own imagination and creative writing. Saw him twice at Hal & Mals. Whether you liked him or not, he was a performer with a huge following.
Racist old white guy that dropped N bombs in his songs, good riddance
Your response to David Allen Coe's passing is a prime example of what is wrong with social media.
Disgusting degenerate scumbag. Outside of his early country his music is pure poison on society.
His underground albums are masterpieces of down-to-earth artistry. “Dropped N bombs in his songs,” oh, anomie. Oh, perdition. How now shall we carry on with our existence?
That's... deep
Strange, how the double standard exists in contrast to all the women hating, violence promoting gangsta rap "music" ever since. The door swings both ways, and the "culture" doesn't like it. Grow up. You're either racing toward a higher culture, or a lower.....the lower you go, the less credibility you have as a "culture".
Huh, who could have imaged such was even possible - a complicated man with a lot of facets, and it cannot be pigeonholed in a few lines by people who only had very superficial knowledge of him, if any at all. What kind of crazy shit is that....?
