Well, well, well, Ward 5 City Councilman Bryan Grizzell defended getting a big fat raise on the pages of Facebook yesterday. Read for yourself.
Council has not received a raise in 24 years. Foote and I disagree… and maybe he worked it differently from others… which is why nearly 67% of Ward 1 had something else to say. This increase takes place in 2029. Most of us won’t even get it. This is planning for the future and is in line with similar councils in similar cities. Some council members and Aldermen make over $80,000 and no one has a word to say about it… They get vehicles… even the county supervisors (also part time and makes close to $60,000) get vehicles…. Jackson council members get none of that. We use our personal funds for much of what we do…. Well.. I DO. All of the clerks make more than we do… most full time employees make more than we do.
Everyone wants others to do the work but don’t want them to be compensated for it. Most of the pay that I do get goes right back out the door and into the community. Plus, if you want more professional leadership, you’re going to have to pay a better salary… especially when it comes to carrying such a high level of accountability because we can lose our personal assets. Heck… I’ve gotten sued more times in 4 years than most city employees in their lifetime… and not for anything I’ve done!Employees who make less are at the will and pleasure of their directors and the mayor. They determine their pay. Council does not have a primary hand in determining what city employees make. Directors need to understand their budget and make the necessary proposals and movements to manage their budget and their workforce. That is not on the council.
What Councilmen and Ealdormen are getting paid over $80,000? Just curious. Inquiring want to know.

He's probably referring to Vicksburg. They're the ones everyone talks about, but they also only have two...
Pudgy's textbook narcissism on full display.
Hassan chop! That's why it is called public service. Plus, have any of you public servants actually made Jackson a better place since being elected? Want more? Perform better.
Pay 'em what they are worth.
Give him a break! He has a chance to be the next John Hohrn, cause this probably the only job he got.
"Pay 'em what they are worth. "
Then they would all quit. ;-)
As unimpressive member of the Council as there has been in some time and that is saying something. Feels so entitled he already assumes he'll survive the next election cycle.
Don't worry, Grizzell still gets his JPS salary for doing absolutely nothing.
pretty sick burn on Foote tho
He's a joke. Even if those alderman were making 80k, what is the financial health of those cities compared to Jackson who cant even fill in a pothole without getting a grant or issuing a bond for it?
"All of the clerks make more than we do… most full time employees make more than we do."
Perhaps they do more than you do.
I believe the pay for city councilmen (persons?) is a known quantity. And that the position is filled by people who actively campaign for the job. If a person takes a job voluntarily and knows the pay beforehand, then I fail to see how they have any reason to complain. Or perhaps that person didn't have the common sense to investigate beforehand, in which case that would explain a lot of the actions of government officials. Ready, fire, aim.
Plus, if you want more professional leadership, you’re going to have to pay a better salary
No, what happens is you get a bunch of broke-dicks who can't hold jobs running for the position because it's their only chance in life at a salary.
Surrounding municipalities raised their mayors salary and alderman’s salary to attract better quality candidates. Clinton’s is my first thought of an example. The mayor is getting a $20k raise. Is it wrong for Jackson to want to do the same?
The intention is exactly the same. It’s on the educated and qualified citizens in Jackson to actually run for the office.
All of this is hilarious.
Our state legislature did the same thing last year with MS being in the poor financial shape that it’s in.
There’s no public outcry about our legislature incompetence though. Looks to me the city of Jackson is following the great leadership model of our state elected officials. Seems fine to me.
Our state legislature voted to raise statewide elected officials salary and is set to increase from 25k 60k in some instances. Where’s the outcry? Governor salary went up $40k
If it is true that the raise does not kick in until the 2029 council is seated, I can support it. We need good people to run and in the current environment it’s about impossible to find anybody. But supervisors do not make almost $60,000. That’s greatly exaggerated.
@10:00 Clinton has a glimmer of a future. Jackson has NO future.
As one of the 67% who didn't vote for Ashby I sure as hell wasn't voting for a pay raise.
Nor do I remember Grace or Jasmine arguing for a pay raise as part of their campaign platforms either.
This whole increase was an 11th hour gambit and I'm guessing only the sitting council people knew the card they were planning to play.
Agree with the comment above. Grizzell acts as if his next re-election is a shoe-in. His attitude reeks of entitlement.
You just described the Yazoo County Board of Stupidvisors… one cuts yards and lives with his mother…wears a flower in his lapel though at board meetings…
Say no more - look at the new mayor for the perfect example.
In the current environment of Jackson, you will not find anybody regardless of the salary. And if anyone runs because of the salary, that is not who you want.
Supervisors in Hinds absolutely make 60K. Do your research.
You people just want to complain. No one said anything about the governor, attorney general, and all of the state judges getting a raise. Just hush! Everyone doesn’t want to be “Mississippi Poor” and neither do you.
Supervisor pay is set by state statute and based on county population. The highest is about $57,000 and Hinds County hits that mark. They have vehicles because their districts are larger than any city ward. However, imho, the supe whose district is practically the county seat city shouldn't get one. That city takes care of his district and all he does is kick in some county funds.
Hinds was $45K til a few years ago. However, they don't need vehicles as there is a County Administrator who handles all executive functions. If they need to "ride the roads" to check them out, fine, let them check out a vehicle from the fleet for a few days and return it.
Competency and actual job performance mean nothing to @10:46.
Rankin supervisors have nice lifted pickup trucks. That’s acceptable right?
What an intellectually dishonest drama queen.
I noticed Grizzle didn't list his accomplishments - or any improvements in his district - to justify a pay raise.
Elected officials get way more than they deserve. ! They know what it is when they decide to run for office so shut up cry babies 😭
And they make way too much
And they make way to much plus the big black suv
