As movie made 85 years ago, that everyone has in their movie library, sells out when few other movies sell out. That says a lot about the quality of movie scripts today.
I'm sorry, but I have never understood how a movie that at its core glorifies the South's sedition and condones the institution of slavery can be considered to be a great movie--especially today. If I sound like a "Karen", then so be it.
"I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies."
Frankly my dear, I do give a damn 😀
Rode up to Memphis to see it many years ago. Six hours is a long movie.
Put a knife under your theater seat to cut the pain.
2:02, I believe it is just under 4 hours long, not 6.
It doesn’t have a 30 minute video lecture before showing it, giving it “context”?
1:18 PM it's only a movie get over yourself.
1:18 Gone With the Wind broke ground for black actors in film. Hattie McDaniel added to that list of firsts by accepting an Academy Award for her role, something that had not happened for a black actor prior to that. It was indeed set in the time of slavery, but it humanized those that the institution had sought to dehumanize, just as Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington did more recently in the film Glory.
@1:18 PM - History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from, and if it offends you, even better, because then you are less likely to repeat it. It's not yours to erase, modify, or destroy.
You folks are all correct about history. However, it is undeniable that the movie glorifies the sedition and slavery which led to 650,000 deaths in the Civil War. On the other hand Glory stands for the principles upon which our great Republic stands--Freedom, liberty, and self-sacrifice.
Apparently 'Ole Salty' doesn't know the definition of sedition, or if he pretends to, he should know that in 1860, as in 1776, states had the same right to disassociate themselves from the union of states as they had to join it.
I don't care whether Salty listens to ME...but at least listen to what Abe's cabinet members said on the subject.
Susan Dabney Smede wrote a book called "Memoirs of a Southern Planter" about her family's large plantation in southwest Hinds County that is fascinating, historical, and pre-dated Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind". Having read both books, I believe Mitchell liberally "borrowed" from Smede's book. I highly recommend Smede's book to anyone who is interested in local history. The Dabney family descendants still live in the area as do descendants of their former slaves.
The American Civil War was fomented by Europeans with the end goal of establishing a European controlled Central Bank of the USA. The CSA was backed by the European Central Bankers. When the CSA lost, it was left in financial ruin and debt to the European Central Bankers who lost nothing. This is because the CSA currency they created wasn’t backed by European gold, it was backed by Southern collateral. The European Central Bankers did not accept slaves as collateral. Only Gold, Silver, and Real Estate.
Regardless, the Republic was able to keep the Rothschild Bank from taking over until they fomented another war, a Great War. Then the Creature from Jekyll Island was created and now your money is worth a fraction of a penny of what it was worth in 1914.
Hey 5:17!
Don’t go interjecting facts into this….
@7:49 PM - It's "Memorials" of a Southern Planter.
It glorifies sedition? I argue just the opposite. It is an anti-war movie. It starts out with the hotheads wanting a war. Ashley tries to tell them how horrible war is, they won't listen. Rhett spells it out for them and for his troubles, the hotheads want to kill them. Who needs canon factories after all. The hotheads say a gentleman can lick 20 yankees, I take the movie to use that to point out how arrogant and stupid they were.
Then it shows the horror of war for the losers. Crops gone, cities burned down, devastation deluxe. There was no Marshall plan. after the war The starvation on Tara was real as there was much starvation after the war was over. Scarlett says to hell with Southern honor when she starts doing business with yankees, despite what Southern society says about her.
Awesome! Taking the whole family.
@1:18
The version of the movie you watched must differ from the one I watched.
8:47--You make an excellent point.
WTF Mississippi?
Art anybody? This is an artistic, in so many genre as every film is, cinematography, music, sound, the actors, directors, et.al. as is every film made. We need to look beyond our own expectations and biases of how things happened then and enjoy the art of a great historical event. That’s why it won awards, including Hattie’s!
I mean, really, what the fuck?
Here’s the program folks. If Gone with the Wind offends you, then don’t go see it. If you find it enjoyable for whatever reasons appeal to you then go enjoy it. This same principle goes for all movies, comedy shows, concerts, etc etc. No one really gives a damn about your feelings.
strap this one on saltwaterpappy ,,,,,,,,,
history doesn't exist for you to like or dislike,,,,,,
it exits so that people like yourself might learn from it
I'm glad that I was able to get a good discussion going.
