Armed Mother Shoots Attacker, Protects Children

This post is reprinted with the permission of the Taxpayer's Channel (Greenwood).

A mother, along with her three children, were in their home today near Gravel Hill in Carroll County, when a man smashed his truck into their dining room and pursued them through the house wielding a knife.

But their father, who was at work in Greenwood at the time of the incident, had trained them all to seek safety in their "safe room."

The suspect was identified as Steve Lamar Goss, Jr., age 42 of Greenwood.

Steve Lamar Goss Jr, age 42

According to a press release issued by the Carroll County Sheriff's office:

Goss had driven his 2500 GMC Pickup Truck into the dining room of the home after he had been unable to compromise the front door. The mother prayed and her children recited scripture even as they heard Goss kicking in the doors inside their home. He eventually found them hiding in the closet that was designated as the family's safe room. The mother shot him as he entered the closet still holding the knife. Goss then fled the scene.

Deputies intercepted him on the road with a felony vehicle stop, whereupon he exited his vehicle and fled for refuge into Acy's Store.

The suspect was arrested by Carroll County deputies in the store, and was transported to the Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm.

After receiving treatment, he was booked into the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility on four counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary.

At the time of today's incident, Goss was out on bond after being previously charged with possession of a weapon by a felon.

Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker commended the father for having an emergency plan, and for preparing his wife and children for just such a situation:

We can all learn a lot from this family about the importance of having an emergency plan in place in our homes and most importantly the power of prayer.

I thank the Lord for this father's preparation; the bravery shown by the mother and children, and that what could have been a tragedy was transformed into a testimony of their faith in God.

Center mass, Mom.

There seems to be a pattern - white men with tats all over their neck and sometimes face need to be put away (down).

I highly suspected that he lives in a crappy single-wide. I looked him up and bada bing, he does.

A shotgun would've been a good choice.

This POS should never be out of a prison.

These were affluent people. Expect more of this to happen as the last of the middle class is destroyed. The middle class is the buffer between the poor and the rich. Once they are gone, Americans are just 3 missed meals away from breaking down the gates to their neighborhoods and overwhelming the rent a cops and taking everything the rich have including their lives. This is why Zuckerberg is building a bunker in Hawaii.

Does he have a connection to the family? Not implying anything; I'm just wondering how he came to pick out that particular house.

Read a somewhat similar story a few years ago. Mom and Dad were at work when a thug kicked in the front door. 12-year-old boy and his two little sisters retreated to the designated closet where the Dad had used freezer tape to make an "X" on the inside of the closet door.

When the thug turned the closet door handle, the boy put his Dad's.357 Magnum on the center of the "X" just like his Dad had taught him and pulled the trigger. Perfect center mass shot. Police found the thug expired in the front yard.

It will be interesting to find out why this individual did. There has to be more to this story. However, there's no question but that this person needs to be firmly dealt with upon conviction. Since the fool was out on bail when he did this, bail should be revoked and he should be held without bail pending disposition of these charges against him. It would be nice to think that he will be sentenced to consecutive terms of imprisonment upon conviction, but under Tate Reeves influence before Tate became governor the courts seldom impose sentences that effectively mean life. Not that Tate soft on crime. It was all about how much it was costing the State to imprison the gracious plenty of felons we have here.

Prayers for this family and children who had to endure this while their dad & husband were at work.

Notice the high sheriff gave credit to 'prayer'. Prayer didn't save those lives - a gun did, along with her knowledge of how to fire it.

Use of the word “fool” to describe this piece of trash is incorrect. He may indeed be foolish but the primary problem is that he is evil.

Too bad the mother didn’t fire multiple rounds and hit center mass. If he were dead we wouldn’t have to pay to house him the rest of his life. Don’t just “shoot to stop” as the professional instructors advise, at least in print. Shoot until they are dead and maybe you will save future potential victims. Just never say that you shot to kill. “I was afraid he would kill me” are the key words.

Prior to hitting the paywall of a certain local news outlet, I obtained the juicy, salient “fact” that these people were neighbors of some sort. One can purchase the entire article for $2.00. In fact, there was a smorgasbord of subscription options. For instance, a resident of the trade area can have one year of Tuesday-Saturday editions delivered to his/hers/their doorstep for $348.00. Nonresidents get that exact same offer for a mere $528.00.

After zero deliberation, I declined.

I figure I’m set for the time being, with eight months left on my NYT online subscription (archives, magazines, full array of daily games where you don’t get cut off the Spelling Bee after one pangram, the whole she-bang) for $1.00 a month.

Good Point. Hunker down until its safe again in the free world.
Which it will never be.
What was this puke after? (motive?)
Revenge for being slighted.
Sexual favors?
Strong women!
Mother did right calling on a higher power.
At least she hit the criminal & saved herself & the kids.

the taxpayers of Mississippi would appreciate a little jail yard justice.

2:07, both saved them. You're mistaken.

Looks like Goss FAFO

Dude is a married father of 4 boys and owns his own business. There certainly has to be a LOT more to this story! Can't wait to hear what comes out.......

Anonymous said...

I bet their ears are still ringing.

@1:32 - Most men with neck tats are fathers of four boys. Next.

Anonymous said...

There is more to the story. Carroll County is a huge drug area like inner city Jackson. Goss owns a successful construction company.

Anonymous said...

Too bad for him that crank heads don’t eat. Because Acy’s has absolutely the best cheeseburger I’ve ever had. Not even a close second

Neck tattoo guy is a business owner? Who the “F” would hire this guy? Damn it’s too bad he wasn’t killed.

Prayer is all well and good but prayer without a gun doesn’t help much. More pistol practice and less praying might result in a better earthly outcome for these type situations. I can’t speak for the eternal outcome but not being a victim in this world is a pretty high priority.

Anonymous said...

@11:07 - You don't know that. It's simply your opinion. We do know the role the weapon played. The other is pure conjecture.

Anonymous said...

@4:12 AM. Its my opinion too.

Leviticus said...

@ 1:08 - Regarding prayer, you're certainly welcome to have and hold your opinion, and I respect that right, but don't try to pass opinion off as fact.

Anonymous said...

Praying is no different than wishing. The only difference is if you pray and don’t get your way then you are supposed to beat yourself up for not being a good enough Christian. The gun saved their lives and that is a fact.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
