So much for open government at the Hinds County Board of Supervisors.
The Board voted to start having work sessions outside of the regular Board meetings. The work session is where the real dirt will take place while the regular Board meetings will be used for taking votes and certain ceremonial functions. There is just one wee little difference between the two meetings.
The regular Board meetings are live-streamed on the county website. The work sessions? Well, if you want to see what your elected representatives are doing, you will have to go down to the work session to see what is taking place.
If you want an idea of what will be addressed at the work session today, check out the agenda posted below.

Thats odd to move to cover that much business under the cloak of a work session. There isnt anything to be gained from this move other than shade.
It may be the only way to prevent the meetings from descending into a broadcast clown show. Some of the people elected in Jackson and Hinds County cannot resist the urge to play to the cameras and grandstand whenever the opportunity presents itself. It wastes time and looks real bad. In another city or county this may be unacceptable but here, I don't know.
I'd be curious to know if this violates statues regarding meetings.
Watching sausage being made-
No. No requirement to stream.
Transparency only applies to others, not to us.
I don't see 'streaming' mentioned; however, there's this...
§ 25-41-1. Legislative Declaration
It being essential to the fundamental philosophy of the American constitutional form of representative government and to the maintenance of a democratic society that public business be performed in an open and public manner, and that citizens be advised of and be aware of the performance of public officials and the deliberations and decisions that go into the making of public policy, it is hereby declared to be the policy of the State of Mississippi that the formation and determination of public policy is public business and shall be conducted at open meetings except as otherwise provided herein.
And here we go again. Secrecy. The majority of us have jobs that require us to not be present while these jokers play their games. It’s how we make a living. Funny thing is, they say the same about what they are doing but they know it’s illegal.
This move is all Graham.
Doesn't matter if it violates anything. No one enforces anything against Hinds CO or Jackson, so they do as they please.
It would appear that it must be public.
I support the move to having these bi-weekly work sessions - it will eliminate much of the wasted time spent during the required meetings for the 'recognitions'; the 'reports' from the other elected officials; and start the discussion of major decisions ahead of the vote.
Would livestreaming (as LF, the interested but possibly lazy reporter wants) be a good action. Yes it would, just as the decision made several years ago to livestream the regular board mtgs.
No, there is no Open Meetings violation, as the public is invited - in fact encouraged (here is where the public can come and spout their opinions) to attend.
In fact, this might help eliminate some of the previous violations of the Act - those 'non-meeting discussions (where wink-wink there were never three Supervisors present) when details of actions were worked out.
Push for livestreaming. Who knows, they may well do it - these primadonnas do like to preen before their constituents every chance they get.
But in reality - how many folks really watch the weekly mtgs - other than to see the circus that occurred regularly between Archie and Calhoun these past few years.
Really KF - take a poll. We know YOU want it so you don't have to get up and out to grab something to write about. But find out how many of your readers really watch on any regular basis the livestreamed meetings of the HCBOS.
Does anyone watch the livestream? Seriously, other than a handful maybe and if you did waste that much time watching these clowns (time you will never get back) do you really think they are going to do anything different? Do you really believe that your opinion matters? I understand that many of you believe that you can make a difference, unfortunately you are out numbered by the uneducated, illiterate, uninformed who routinely vote for the same people who are sinking the ship known as Hinds County.
This is not a closed meeting. Sounds like anybody is welcome to attend. The whole video stream is a charade ever since they put the covid screens up. Can't hear a thing anyway.
So are they still drilling a well and building a water tank at the new detention center??? If so, I assume they would get off of the City of Jackson water system?
Next up...Supervisors raise their pay to equal double their present salary since they are meeting twice as often to solve community problems and push Hinds to the forefront.
And just who the hell (which supervisors) do you people think will stop whatever they're doing to attend the work sessions?
"Leftenant Gramm" has to be at least as old as Woody Assaf would be. They were on the air at the same time.
They can stay locked in a room all week! They need to be discussing why them damn killers, carjackers and robbers were being held in the youth detention center!
That, for sure is gonna cost the county a lot of money and grief.
Just hope they don’t kill anyone while out on the town!
If the voters re-elect these same people then they are ok with these secret meetings.
Good luck Jackson.
