Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds Count District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II announced the successful prosecution of Willie James Bingham in Hinds County Circuit Court. Bingham was convicted of First Degree Murder in the 2018 shooting death of Clifton David Nelson.
On March 24, 2018, Edwards Police responded to a report of a shooting outside a convenience store at 104 Withers Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim’s body lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his abdomen. Nelson was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Following the successful prosecution, Bingham was sentenced to life in prison.
DA Owens stated, “We want to tell the victim’s family that we are sorry this happened to their loved one and we hope the fact that the perpetrator has been brought to justice and has answered for his crime will bring some closure to the family as they continue to grieve.”

"2018" Justice delayed is justice denied.
I agree with 8:43
This murderer was out long enough to claim covid unemployment and housing benefits and live a comfortable scummy life for nearly half a decade. Not to mention how many fresh victims he could claim in that timeframe. What an absolute disgrace!
He hasn't 'answered for his crime', Jody II. He's only been convicted. He will not have answered until he's wheeled out under a sheet.
Our criminal justice system allows more delays that any other profession.
And the stakes are pretty high given that it often involves murder.
I get that it is fair to allow reasonable time for information to be gathered, but it feels like we have redefined "reasonable" in this and most every other aspect of life.
Why not allow delays. The justice system has the mindset that the perpetrator is a "captive audience". Along with the prima donna judges and prosecutors they try the cases when they're damn good and ready. They dont give a fat rats ass victims families or anything else other that what will give them the most good press and re-elected.
Damn, that means he will be off the streets for nearly a year.
I think Jody Owens is doing a good job. Cases are actually being tried, despite Covid-related delays, and convictions obtained. Keep up the good work, Jody.
