Mayor Explains Water System Challenges

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba objected to the Mississippi State Health Department's boil water notice issued Friday for the city of Jackson.  Mayor Lumumba issued a statement that explains his position as well as the challenges currently facing Jackson's water treatment plants. The statement is posted below.

I really don't care how bad it gets in Jackson and there are a lot more like me.

Insert Bart Simpson clip:

"I didn't do it. Nobody saw me do it. Can't blame me."

Anonymous said...

So, they joined the MsRWA at least a year ago, and just asked them for assistance "early this summer"? That would be after June 20th -- right?

What a bunch of incompetent buffoons.

Anonymous said...

We get it. Nobody wants to work for the city.

HOWEVER

This narrative omits any mention of WHY the mayor objects to a state-issued BWN or what took the city a full day to come in line with *ahem* a KNOWN safety issue.

Anonymous said...

So what is Lumumba's point? That Jackson should be exempt from issuing boil water notifications?

Anonymous said...

Race card is all Chokwe and his administration can bring to the table and even black voters are tired of it. He’s in office providing no services or help to these poor people of south and west jackson

All of the employees that knew how to do anything retired. They were replaced with cousins, nephews and friends. Same can be said about EVERY department in Jackson. None of the employees know how to DO anything.

He’s got so many excuses. Excuses for new trash service that city council didn’t approve. Excuses for water plant and EPA findings. Excuses for water plant and Ms Dept of Health. Excuses for trash trucks at airport. Excuses for not posting crime stats. Excuses for not charging customers for water. Excuses for 911 calls not being transferred. Excuses for crime. Excuses for not filling potholes. The people of Jackson voted for this. Enjoy

"The City’s inability to hire and retain these maintenance workers, as well as Class A certified Water Plant Operators, is the same type of issue that other businesses are experiencing in the current labor market"

You are a municipality, not a business. Other municipalities are not experiencing the same type issues, well maybe Flynt, Michigan.

Anonymous said...

Getting rid of the residency requirement and paying a competitive wage would fix this.

Anonymous said...

Name one city in the U.S. that is in so bad shape that their workers would come to work for Jackson. With the poor working conditions, no spare parts, ignorant racist mayor, and add on the good chance of being killed if they ever step out on Jackson streets. Anyone who would willingly come to Jackson would be nearly as bad as the people already in Jackson.

A couple of years ago the place where I work hired a new employee. He had worked at the Jackson water plant but was white and was sent packing so a black man could be hired.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the mayor should address why water treatment plant operators don't want to move to the murder capital of the country to work for substandard wages? The few areas of the city such people would want to live in have a 911 system that doesn't respond to their calls and attempts to report crime are rebuffed by some clown employed by the city telling them to hang up and call the capitol police.

But can the mayor stay in Jackson for a week straight?

Anonymous said...

He was wound up... all that hand waving and shouting and he said absolutely nothing.

Anonymous said...

These aren't the documents he said he would produce to the media. This is bullshit outline points he came up with.

Mayor "Transparency"

Anonymous said...

Translated very simply.

We provide the water and are legally responsible to do so. We bill for the water we provide.

We are not competent to do so. We can't run our business. We can't hire the proper people to perform the service we are legally responsible for. We try hard. But we can't do it.

Excuse us for not performing.

Who to believe? A mayor who hid an EPA order requiring Jackson to fix its water system - the same mayor who has lied many times about his administration's lack of maintenance & inepitude in operating the city's water & sewer system? Or should we believe the state health department that has been on the side of public health for the city's suffering residents & businesses from the beginning?

Anonymous said...

Are these the right docs? Both are dated before the latest boil water notice.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Terry Williamson wrote all of this... Where is the documentation / responses from MDHS or MDEQ. Also why is Terry writing a memo to the mayor explaining the problems at the water plants? Shouldn't the public works director do this? Given that the letter was written on July 22 and memo was created last Monday, it can be assumed that the city new the latest boil water notice was coming, and chose not to give a heads up to the public. Instead they created "documentation"....

Finally, who checked the work of the contractor to ensure the panel was installed correctly, before issuing payment?

Always and excuse, never a remedy...

Anonymous said...

Same 10:17.

Why would I care? People are allowed to choose the leadership and residential location that offers the things that they enjoy.

If Jackson is your bag of tricks, enjoy.
To each their own.

Anonymous said...

In other words, the mayor doesn't know English, and he and the city council are ineffective.

But to be fair, the MSDH has a long and deeply entrenched culture of arrogance, so maybe it's a legitimate competition.

Anonymous said...

The mayor brings up some valid points. Personnel is a real issue for them. They need qualified people. The mayor is correct.

The problem is that Jackson has spent years hiring friends, even if they don't meet the qualifications. They have spent years refusing to hire certain people because their skin was white. And now the mayor correctly says they don't have qualified people. But if they had hired people based upon qualifications and skill, they wouldn't be in this predicament.

Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight... the water in Jackson is not clean enough to drink. This is a determination by an agency which looks at water from all around the state. The Mayor thinks that even with water that does not pass muster there should be no warnings given out; in other words, the water is not good enough to drink without boiling but let the residents drink it anyway. This is another example of Jackson's new mantra -- "Say it ain't so even if it really is, besides there are a lot of people who will buy whatever we pump out."

Anonymous said...

Also why is Terry writing a memo to the mayor explaining the problems at the water plants?

Probably the only person in his administration who can string a couple of sentences together.

Anonymous said...

@12:37, whole damn thing for the Emperor is about narrative control. C'mon, they had a damn hazardous substance leak into the environment and kept it from the public. If he was white, conservative and/or Republican this bullshit he is pulling would already have received national visibility and scrutiny.

Anonymous said...

Jackson and especially JPS hires based on skin color!!! It’s unreal
Zack Wallace hires whites and that’s about the only person in Jackson. All others whites be damned
It’s major discrimination… JPS is the worst about this.

Anonymous said...

This just in, the mayah says water is no longer wet. News conference to follow.

Anonymous said...

We object.

Anonymous said...

If the mayor objects he should tell the people that it is ok not to boil the water. The lawyers from the Flint, Michigan case would love to have him personally culpable.

Anonymous said...

August 2, 2022 at 11:52 AM -- "We try hard."

Maybe they try hard to cover it up, but there's no evidence of an effort or urgency toward anything. Except maybe the garbage contract...wonder why?

Tijuana of the South said...

If the Jackson unwashed masses have no potable water, let them eat cake, right?

Anonymous said...

The mayor knows the people living in Jackson will soon be gone. It could be by being murdered on the street, leaving the city in disgust, to poisoning by the water they are forced to drink. It really doesn't matter. They will not be around long enough to matter.
Now that there are no more abortions the population will be replaced quickly with new lids who do not know how much of a joke the mayor is.

Anonymous said...

And so Ladumbo has some paper ginned up by somebody else with a bunch of excuses for problems he should have solved, to try to cover his @$$ and look like he is maybe doing something when all he's done is have some paper ginned up by somebody else with a bunch of excuses for problems he should have solved.

“No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!”

Anonymous said...

Off topic but how is it ok for a food truck to setup right outside baggage claim at the airport. I believe it was Dabs chicken and waffles. I can’t stop for more than 30 seconds but this guy gets clearance to setup generators and serve food?!

Anonymous said...

Someone from the media needs to press Lumumba on the residency requirement for City of Jackson employees as possibly being a roadblock for qualified employees. Also, why is he as mayor of Jackson, going to all of these speaking engagements paid for by other woke/liberal/progressive(if he can use buzzwords so can I) cities and getting paid. I bet if you were a city employee on the clock and making money in other metro area cities, you wouldn't have a job.

In reply to 3:02 p.m. I said...

Look. When some outfit claiming they've got money to hand out hand over fist for fighting urban crime hands you $700,000 large to hand over to your sister, it's only polite that you show up in Atlanta to hear their sales pitch, right.

Anonymous said...

The media allows him to get away with everything he says. Except kingfish!!! The local media all tiptoe around him… it’s bc they don’t want to be called racists.

Anonymous said...

Hehe lookit the spelling of the Mayor on the CC line of the Terry Williamson letter

Anonymous said...

Have we been consuming bad water since July 9? Time to get MBI involved.

Anonymous said...

@10:46 Same for Hinds County all over. Look at the Sheriff's Office. Tyree and Taylor hiring on all their buddies as quick as possible.

Anonymous said...

Worst run City in the country with out a doubt!

Anonymous said...

Ha! I saw the chicken truck at the airport yesterday. I knew I was back in Lumumba’s land.

Anonymous said...

Except kingfish!!! The local media all tiptoe around him ...

Anthony Warren has it figured out. CJ LeMaster to a lesser extent since Lumumba's sycophants started cooing in his ear.

Anonymous said...

Personnel is the damn job. Providing clean water is the job. Folks are tired of hearing why something couldn't be accomplished. Stop talking and f-in get to work. So sick of this shit.

Anonymous said...

The wise solution is to change the definition of “safe” and admire and praise oneself for profound mitigation tactics.

Krusatyr said...

About 50,000 water users in Jackson get turbid equity-water piped to them free. That's better than carrying five gallon buckets, two at a time, up from the ditch where the trash is floating and occasional folks lie succumbed in the weeds.

Anonymous said...

Whatever happened to the one percent tax money, and more recently the Seimens settlement money? Just curious.

Anonymous said...

Lumumba repeatedly waives his arms and says he's not at expert, then goes on to allude that the Dept of Health parameters for boil water notifications are open to debate.

Anonymous said...

If you listened to his pathetic presser, around the 22 minute mark, he admits that the boil water notice may remain until the completion of work at the plant which he stated will be late October. His argument that the BWN should be lifted because testing is inconsistent and the water is not unsafe to drink all the time is whacked. If the EPA and various agencies examine the state of the water system any closer it may lead to it getting shutdown altogether. Putting forth excuses for not having sufficient or capable staffing only spotlights the same fact. Explaining the failure to secure outside experts assistance emphasizes incompetence. He may have to resort to vetoing the Bowl water notice. Chokwe is in way over his head.

Jackson residents want this jack@as in office obviously otherwise they would vote in a competent individual.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
