Who is Strong-Arming Whom?

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba claimed Waste Management was trying to "strong-arm" Jackson in garbage contract negotiations. Check out this letter:

Meanwhile, the Mayor discussed the garbage contract at a press conference today.  Start at 8:30.

A nice shiny Bentley would make this go much smoother.

This egomaniac Mayor baths in his own blather.

Don't blame WM at all. A new one-year contract is nothing but a one-year extension. Screw Lumumba.

Step 1: create a crisis
Step 2: provide a solution (the garbage co. the mayor wanted originally)
Step 3: mayor gets what he wants
Step 4: Jackson continues to lose

"Not collecting enough from the water bills"....hahahaha....what water bills?

Anonymous said...

"Other cities have reached out to Jackson to hear what we're doing".....hahahahaha...seriously doubt that

Anonymous said...

So, how do we, or who do we, the citizens of Jackson respond to that one day per week isn't an acceptable option? The image of a full week's of overflowing garbage on our streets is just one additional picture of our city's decline.

As goes in the mayors La La Land. The last three mayors actually. Just get the man his kickback, Dr. Dobbs group quit paying.

We don’t have these problems in Flowood.

MEMO

TO: Mayor Gumflapper

RE: Roadside collection requirements

SOURCE: City of Jackson Solid Waste Division:

Place trash bins roadside before 7:00 AM on your pickup day but no earlier than 6 :00 PM the evening prior to your scheduled collection.

The last 3 minutes of Chowke's ranting presser tell you all you need to hear. Should be entertaining in the least to find out just who are his new "temporary" garbage men. Maybe they'll be "credible messengers in training" wearing horizontal stripes?

Hopefully the press in attendance reads that letter to realize how they were spun.

Anonymous said...

4:18 : The press hopefully will do what ? Lol, the press, in part, are the reason Jackson is as bad as it is. Who was the last elected official with a D behind his name held accountable ?

Anonymous said...

Hey Virgi, before the next RFP why don't you get off your butt-kissing ass and ask us in Belhaven if we want to move to garbage collections only once per week.

The answer is NO.

Anonymous said...

The Mayor is so ignorant. Waste Management holds all the cards they know that they are the only people who will pick up the garbage. So the only option for the mayor is to talk bad about waste management and hope the bad publicity will make them change their mind. Honestly i don't think waste management really cares if they get the business or not. To me it's funny that they are making the mayor look like a complete fool. What's the worst that can happen, we add some more trash to the composting heap called Jackson, MS

Anonymous said...

Looks like open warfare now. Spears are flying everywhere. Guess the nuclear option is more of a probability than a possibility with the leak of the letter by WM.

Anonymous said...

contracts like this require expensive up front investments (trash cans, trucks, etc.). Those expenses have to be recaptured over time (6 years) to make the contract feasible. 1 year is ridiculous and the City knows that.

Anonymous said...

No Mayor. You haven't been telling the public nor my Council representative for two years that your intention was to move collections to one per week. No Mayor, you are lying.

Anonymous said...

I’ll wait for Jackson Free Press, MS Today, Clarion Ledger and the local news stations to ask hard questions about this completely avoidable fiasco

Can we keep Waste Management and eliminate the marxist mayor?

Once per week pick-up from giant garbage ovens up and down the street will emit an incredible, nauseous knockout miasma.

Dead skunk, rotten egg, rancid roadside kill, sun baked stench of a mayor: "It smells like Lumumba out there!"

WM has done a great job in my neighborhood twice per week for decades. The Boy Mayor is ignorantly presumptuous to micro manage garbage trucks to require two hoppers at $15/hr when one at $20/hr better serves Jackson; plus the decision is not the little commie creep's purview to begin with.

Gum Flapper Slapper said...

Jackson can get by on once a week. The gum flappers in Canton went to once a week. You'll get use to it. If your pickup day is on Monday you got it made.

What I cant figure out is why WM can afford to pickup twice a week those that live out out in the county.

Anonymous said...

I hope Waste Management walks away on October 1 and leaves Jackson with no garbage pick up service.

This is the first time I have ever listened to this clown, and it will definitely be the last. As one of the few remaining white people in the once lovely hamlet of Tchula, all I can say is "the citizens of Jackson elected that clown". Tchula is a garden spot compared to the "Bold New City". We have no problems when compared to Jackson.

If I didn't know better, I would swear that I was watching
a Key & Peele skit ... every time this idiot opens his mouth.

You know it's us white folks fault. I remember when I was a kid growing up in the NE USA and the mob ran the garbage pickups. There was no real problem and they ran on time. Maybe we could get the gangstas involved. Pickup trash and drivebys from vehicles akin to tanks.

So why did WM refuse to hire the Mayor’s sister as a high paid “consultant”!

The mayor needs to worry more about employees working or under contract with the city than wm employees or others. Look at the zoo. Severely understaffed since his radical takeover. He said the animals were being well cared for during its closure. Yet for four days a red river hog escaped and ran lose in the zoo. The red river hogs were forced in the heat of summer to be locked in tiny barns for months during construction. Several were severely injured due to these conditions. This all happened in June of last year but wasnt reported to USDA until December. That's part of the reason the inspection was moved up by two years and the mayor and interim zoo director are scrambling around. Ask yourself why are herd animals been living solitary for over four years now?

What difference does it make whether the trash is picked up at 7:10 or 11:05? Ignorant people... get yo trash to the street by 7AM!! Why would they entertain those stupid people with those sort of questions? If it ain't there by 7, yo bad!!!!!

Suggesting that those issues are concern shows their stupidity.

Who the hell is Chase Bryan? I would have thought Dorsey Carson would be WM’s attorney of record. Hey, Chase this ain’t a golf course, the hazards are everywhere. BTW, it would seem that Chase the golfer leaked the letter since it was addressed to him. Great way to build legitimacy on privileged communications, Chase! Must be nice to be the smartest guy in the room.

847 - making a molehill out of an anthill. This regulation has been on the city books for decades. But everybody knows about what time their WM truck comes by, and if it is normally in mid-morning, they will take the garbage out when they want, but not necessarily by 7

and many people have been putting their garbage out on Sunday evening when their collection is Tuesday, but they cleaned up the yard over the weekend.

Those times in the city ordinance are not the issue, although if the contract did change residents would have to make the adjustment when the routes changed. Wouldn't take long.

The issue is the Mayor f***King the pooch in trying to muscle his way through the process; not bringing the contract he proposed to the Council in a timely manner. Then not selling the contract to get his votes lined up. Not just once, but twice.

Then he combined the need for a garbage fee increase with the new contract. F**kup #2. There probably would have been a need for a fee increase, with either contract. But he let them get combined into the same discussion.

If that wasn't enough, Hizzoner the Mayor f**ked up again. #3. He combined the once a week proposal into the entire message.

Going to once a week should happen, and it wouldn 't be so bad as all these Karens here want to sing. Most cities have gone to once a week and it works fine. Overall it should save significant money - but since FU #2 got mixed into the story, the rate hike with limited service (#3) gave great arguments that shouldn't have been combined.

Baby Chockwe got it all wrong. Thought he could follow in the role of his POTUS and declare what he was going to do, damn the torpedos. But this time, he overplayed his pair of dueces.

Don't know how he can claim now an emergency - as Foote said, all he has to do to solve the disaster he has created is to bring a contract to the Council that the majority can support. But Baby Chock doens't understand that this is still an American Democracy, not his daddy's Republic of New Africa where he dictates all.

8:50 - I would bet that there are plenty of folks that have had access to this letter other than just your golf buddy, or whatever, of Chase Bryan.

Once these games get to this level, the "leaking" of a letter revelant to the questions at hand is easily done by more than just the person that was addressed by the incompetent city attorney. Hell, it might have even been done by someone within the city under today's situation

Hizzonor is working hard to ensure his constituents pay more for less services. As near as I can tell from across the river, that’s what they elected him to do.

Well if they fuck this up and my garbage is not picked up I can assure his highness it will be dumped at his office front door downtown!

but the mayor has a back up minority group to service the trash pickup....yeah right...that will be run like every other department in chockwe city!

Nothing a little palm grease cant smooth over.

What ? Only now leaking something is bad ? Democrats ....good for me but not for thee party. Lol, imagine in 2 months all that piled up garbage.

Anonymous said...

Isn’t WM owned by the Teamsters? Chokeme may want to do some research before he starts trying to strong arm people…

Anonymous said...

This looks too choreographed to simply be a response to an impasse in negotiations. Lumumba had to have known that a one-year contract would be a non-starter with WM. Standing up a replacement service provider in a matter of weeks will lead to massive collections problems. Simple question, why is it that everything this Mayor touches turns to shit? Name something, anything that hasn't.

Ben Dover said...

Last mayor same as this mayor. Oh wait, you morons re-elected this marxist fool chowke expecting different results.

Anonymous said...

Lumumba has no credibility as mayor, even with his own city council. How sad. He's in hail mary territory and could care less. This is Jackson. He needs to go.

Wow said...

Thanks for sharing the letter.

I do not think it is problematic for the mayor to advocate for the city of Jackson and to advocate specifically for Waste Management to do a great job. I have noticed they are often very late picking up my garbage. But it does get done.

I would be interested in seeing more data and how the mayor has access to the data he claims: "100 calls every collection day" about issues.

Is this a normal amount? 100 sounds like a lot, but probably an overall small percentage in terms of all the households they serve. What are the calls about? Are these serious issues or just posturing for another contract?

The problem is lack of awareness by the Mayor. Waste management is a publicly traded 15 billion dollar company. It's a different ball game.

Wow said...

I also agree with the commments--you can not micromanage a 15 billion dollar company and tell it its labor model strategy.

A shortened contract is probably the only strategy or tool the mayor has to make waste management realize the mayor is serious about the status of working with them.

But it's very interesting to me that waste disposal is such a central issue. If this strategy was truly viable--who are the alternatives to waste management? Are they truly better options?

It would be great to read more about the alternative proposed by the mayor and the alternative's connections to the Mayor if any.

Just read his op-Ed in the paper. It was garbage. Complains about not having any money and this “must take cost saving measures.” This isn’t a cost to the city, if they collect. It is a cost pass through paid by the citizens. Their needs aren’t being advocated.

Complaining about one person as a hopper, if people are sick or don’t show to work, the company still has to perform. Restaurants have staff out all the time and they have to keep on serving customers. It’s the same or similar.

Define "very late". Put up.

Does anyone else find it contradictory that Mayor Yammeralot keeps harping that FCC Environmental was going to guarantee two 'hoppers' on each of their truck when, at the same time, FCC was (supposedly) modernizing the garbage service with the introduction of new cans and semi-automated pickup of those cans? What in the world were the 'hoppers' going to be doing?

Anonymous said...

A shortened contract is probably the only strategy or tool the mayor has to make waste management realize the mayor is serious about the status of working with them.

One-year contract was only a ploy. How naïve are you?

Would anyone even notice if the garbage isn't picked up in the People's Republik of Jackistan? The flagship city with 100s of abandoned homes, pot holes with zip codes, broken water lines, broken sewer lines, daily carjackings...?

For you residents, get over your chronic denials and move.

@10:48, he conveniently doesn't elaborate that THE MAJOR PART of Jackson's problem is that after 4.5 years the Lumumba administration STILL can't reliably send and collect monthly utility (water, sewer, garbage) bills. So, to obscure his executive branch non-performance problem from public view Lumumba produced a new RFP (vs 2 years ago) that specially asks for only one collection per week. All that other stuff that he says he's been asking WM to 'cure' is BULLSHIT and PABLUM he's trotting out to keep the press and public from asking the HARD questions about the REAL problem -- the NON-COLLECTION of utility billings.

If Solid Waste is receiving 50-100 calls (2600-5200 annually) about garbage collection problems each week then time to FOIA the logs of those calls. Good luck because all those numbers are nothing more than another Lumumba off-the-cuff swag to mis-direct away from the REAL PROBLEM of COLLECTIONs FAILURE by Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

Plot has thickened into a nice ready to bake loaf of bread. The Mayor is breaking state law . Period. Wonder if the other company has already greased his pocket and now he's desperate.

Many years ago a friend addressed a garbage problem in Ridgeland by sending Mayor Gene Magee a Bahr of garbage. Problem got solved and my friend and the Mayor are friends today. Imagine a UPS truck dropping off a multitude of boxes of garbage at Mayor Chump’s house.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
