It appears Hizzoner the Mayor gave the game away when discussing the proposed Belhaven community improvement district last night. WLBT reported:
Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said the city has to be careful in awarding votes based on wealth.
Lumumba supports CIDs, in parts, because it could free up city resources to help less prosperous areas.
“If someone is willing to give more because they have more, we should take advantage of that so we can allocate (our resources) to those areas that don’t have,” he said.
Told ya. This is yet another example of why we can't have nice things in Jackson. The elected thieves see every good deed as an opportunity to screw someone. In this case, some Belhavenites want to create special assessments so they can improve the neighborhood through more security, better landscaping, and possibly infrastructure improvements. The proposed CID taxes are estimated to raise roughly a quarter-million dollarls per year, a drop in the bucket for Belhaven's infrastructure needs.
However, the Mayor sees that as an opportunity to cut spending for Belhaven by the same amount and give to other areas he thinks are more um, deserving of his favoritism. Yet another example of why we can't have nice things in Jackson.
What's funny is watching social media comments from Belhavenites who say the Mayor can't or won't do such a thing. You white folks be trippin'.

It's like that, and that's the way it is
How could the city possibly spend less on Belhaven, than it already is? The streets already look like like a shower of large asteroids has hit (or maybe an earthquake). Of course, that's an improvement over the rest of Jackson, which looks like the aftermath of a Zombie Apocalypse.
Come on man-Equity, not equality, is the "in" thing these days.
Got have the white folks to fund the collective, or cooperative, or whatever jive ass woke buzz words he pulls out for broke ass Jackson.
I told y'all that Mayor Bloviator is transparent!
That diverted $250,000 will fix a lot of things in NE Jacktown; you know...where Baby Chok lives.
The Belhavenites, they don't think it be like it is but it do.
Jackson's "leaders" would do well to learn from Walter Wrinston's quote-"Capital goes where it is welcome and stays where it is well treated".
Many, many people have been warning that this would happen since the outset of this CID garbage. Exactly like he raided the special infrastructure tax to bail out ongoing operations.
The white-in-denial crowd can never get enough of that good ol' Jackson kool-aid.
Even if Antard was to come back and try
to reverse himself publicly you know damn
well that he'll still siphon off the
equivalent funding behind the scenes.
This is nothing new. No "targeted spending" goes to Belhaven.
The maintenance of the "parks" has already been been turned over the Belhaven Friends of the Park.
No events are held in the neighborhood that aren't organized by neighborhood groups.
The Belhaven Improvement Association has replaced the street signs that were no longer even legible. BIA also pays for street and public area clean up. During the last Blue Marathon, neighbors organized a street clean up when the city said they wouldn't even clean up the route.
About all the city does is come in and dig up streets, fix the broken pipes, and leave.
Live in Belhaven.
Had words with my neighbor when she came on too strong trying to get me to sign on to this tax.
She was also hellfire sure that a vote for the Convention Center would magically transform downtown and turn Jackson around.
She also thinks the Chinese offer no threat to our country.
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" - Marx.
The mayor is only being honest in adhering to his principles. Yeah.
Hey David, that's a lot of egg on your face.
of course the mayor is going to take 250k away from belhaven. give 50k to five other areas critical to his re-election. that will shore up the vote an give him the win. no matter how bad the roads, crime, and education are.
Liberalism is a mental disorder.
950 - Belhaven Creek, announced recently in Northside Sun under $3 million contract by city. Jefferson Street being paved today. Greymont and Devine paved two years ago. New sewer line on Edgewood last November. Riverside Drive out for bids this month.
Lots to be done, but there is plenty that could be spent elsewhere once the Mayor institutes his policy of spending equity.
@9:55am - You sound somewhat intelligent, yet you still live in Belhaven. I’m confused.
Some animals are more equal than others.
DIM-O-KRAT voting is a typical waste of mind and not really so terrible of a thing to lose....
With 13 homicides to date in 2021, he could use the $250k to fight crime. But, he won't...
Time to get Brad Chism to do a poll to tell us what to think. His polls are always spot on.
You are already paying taxes. So, you set up a district to pay MORE
This isn't "liberalism." This is the politics and jealousy and resentment, which is what Jackson's leaders really stand for.
@10:43 Funny, I thought the same thing!
Of the few people I know who still live in Belhaven, 100% are what I'd consider to be intelligent people. That being said, to a person, they all take the position of "I love Belhaven, and I'll never leave, because I'm not going to let them run me out of Belhaven." So, what exactly does that mean? Does that mean you're willing to "show them" by being occasionally terrorized, stolen from, taxed to death, frustrated constantly, etc.? Is that the end game?
If / when you lose that "game" (in any number of ways), can't you see that people will just look at you as having been a complete idiot by ignoring the red flags in front of your face?
It's a tragedy that my hometown of Jackson is not getting better, but it's just not. And there are zero prospects of it getting better. In fact, trends show just the opposite. Things are getting worse. Much worse.........but those facts are not hidden. When the people in charge - the people you generally assume want to make things better - are openly telling you they are trying to make things worse, it's time to reassess your home delivery address.
Seems simple.........but that's just me.
Living in Belhaven by choice and complaining about infrastructure, crime etc. is like living in the middle of a swamp by choice and complaining about mosquitoes.
@12:24pm - About as bad as living under an HOA.
I love living in Belhaven. Absolutely there by choice. Many great projects going on currently. Brewery coming this year. Great restaurants. Awesome neighbors. For those of us who enjoy urban living it is wonderful...I’ve never understood why others so rude about it. Come visit, enjoy our restaurants, take a walk and enjoy the unique architecture of MS Largest Historic District. So much to be thankful for.
I chose to live in Belhaven and love it. It’s not a “game”. I’ve never understood why others are so rude and bitter about it... There are many great things happening in Belhaven right now! New developments, many investing in updating homes, brewery coming this year, great neighbors... Come grab a bite at one of our awesome restaurants and take a walk around to enjoy the unique architecture of Mississippi’s largest historic district. A fun and unique place to live and call home. Love it!
@1:02 / @1:16, please tell us how great Belhaven is one more time!
@10:24am - Living in the South is a mental disorder.
People in Madison and Rankin like to poke fun at Belhaven, Fondren, etc. out of insecurity about their own decisions. They know that they abandoned the city and need to feel justified in that decision, because there is always a nagging sense of guilt and regret.
I live in Jackson and can't say I've ever spent any time feeling satisfied that someone in Brandon got screwed by their HOA. Got nothing to do with me. If you're happy with your choices, why expend the energy gloating about someone else's? Life is too short.
1:02pm and 1:16pm (undoubtedly the same person) sounds like 9:55am’s neighbor.
I’ll be sure to swing by once my bomb/bulletproof car is delivered.
@1:52 PM - no we don't, but we do like to poke fun at The Fondren and The Belhaven.
The leftist degenerates that lurk the dank spaces of Fondren and Belhaven deserve every misery that the City of Jackson inflicts upon them.
Lots of Rankin/Madison county poors bashing on Belhaven because they're upset they can't afford a house there.
"Of the few people I know who still live in Belhaven, 100% are what I'd consider to be intelligent people. That being said, to a person, they all take the position of "I love Belhaven, and I'll never leave, because I'm not going to let them run me out of Belhaven."
That is so true.
I personally know one that still remains over there.
I think you just described her.
She's one hell of an attorney and brilliant within her speciality.
But She also crows about the exact same thing
(Belhaven is a paradise and she won't move)
Although her house, two blocks South of Riverside Drive has been burglarized three times within the last two years..
While true, that's none of my business. If she wants to remain there, I wish her well.
However, she does get irritated when I refuse to attend her annual backyard "BBQ".
Normally that would not be an issue, but her parties continue until well after midnight. I will not be found in Jackson, Mississippi after 8:30 PM.
Moved from Northeast Jackson to Rankin County in 2015. Don't regret it for a minute. There are lots of rednecks out here (and I'm one of them), but for the most part, people try to get along here. Not sure why anyone in Jackson supports the present mayor. I have to carry my gun with me just to go to work in Jackson, shootings happen pretty frequently right next door to the building I work in. If I could afford to move away from here, would do it ASAP.
@1:52 I get what you're saying, and yes, folks in Madison and Rankin poke fun, but I think you've completely misjudged WHY they do it. I think they poke fun because they can't understand WHY you'd still live there. While Belhaven, and parts of Fondren, are a couple of the prettiest neighborhoods in MS, I think more people look at it from more of a cost / benefit perspective. Yes, the vegetation is glorious and the architecture is eclectic and unique. Yes, it's also very convenient to many nice places, but that's where people diverge over the cost / benefit. While I'd LOVE to live in a lush neighborhood in a beautiful house that's close to some neat areas (which, incidentally, I do), it wouldn't cross my mind to make the decision to do so if it meant I had to be perpetually concerned about:
WHEN my house would be burglarized (whether I was there or away),
Traversing TERRIBLE streets to get to, well, anywhere,
Enduring common water main breaks,
Whether or not the police would arrive if called,
Exorbitant taxes (property, car tags, etc.),
Deplorable public schools that are more likely to produce criminals than scholars,
......and the list goes on and on and gets longer every day.
No, it's just difficult for those of us, who did abandon Jackson for the justifiable reasons above, to understand why people would be willing to put their life and property at peril, just to be hold-outs that are "not going to let anyone run them out of Jackson." It just seems so counterintuitive to those of us who look at things rationally, and not emotionally.
@ 7:22
1:52 here. Truly I don't begrudge anyone who makes the decision to leave for safety, family, schools, whatever. In the aggregate, these are the forces that cause places like Jackson to fall into cycles of despair -- and there are a thousand Jacksons in this country. But when it's just you making a decision for your family, you're gonna do what you think best, and I don't judge that. And look, all the liberal white folks left in Jackson also happen to be the ones who can afford St. Andrews and JA, because they sure aren't sending their kids to JPS. So it is a luxury to take a "principled stand."
All that said... Jackson is the core and identity of the region and the capitol of the state. I will never understand or excuse people openly gloating about its struggles or mocking those who decide to try and do something positive about it in whatever small ways they can.
Not all of us in Belhaven are dumb liberals. Some of us are center or right, and just enjoy getting buzzed within walking distance of home.
@10:40 PM
No self respecting conservative is a drunkard. The ATF form 4473 strictly prohibits the transfer to, and possession of firearms by drunkards. You are probably some smoothbrain who watches OANN and leaves your guns unsecured for your children to shoot their siblings with.

Who the hell else do you think should or would organize neighborhood events? Or were you looking for Bennie to host a catfish fry in Belhaven?

Exactly what the intelligent Romans told their goofy brethren that choose to remain in Rome after the
Ostrogoths/Visigoths took over Rome.
7:36, If drunks couldn't buy firearms, the market would crater. The closest thing I could find to the prohibition you cited on Form 4473 is question 21(e): "Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?" Obviously, alcohol is not a "controlled substance," within the meaning of this question.
Maybe I'm missing something. If so, I'm sure someone will fill in the gap.
