This is what the 2nd Amendment is all about. A single woman protecting herself and her child in a situation where the police can never arrive in time to save her. Some people in the current city administration would want her defenseless and another statistic of Jackson crime. Shame on them.

I am an attorney and have represented several women who had been in relationship with individuals who couldn’t undertand it’s over and I am moving on. I also advise them to go through legal process, get a restraining order, etc. But when a perp is kicking in your door, a piece of paper with a judge’s signature means nothing until the police show up. During the in-between time, you need the ability to protect yourself. Hence get a gun. I hate when any person dies unnecessarily. But if a person has to die, it should always be the person who made a choice to commit a violent act and not the innocent party.

So sad.

She did the right thing. Self defense is always a righteous kill. Hopefully she knows that.

Thank God we don't have gun control. Generally it's the fondren eastover crowd calling for it. They have gates and security... the poorer single moms and elderly in lower income neighborhoods are the ones left out with no protection. It's a white privlidge thing calling for fun control. Generally the poor are not in favor of it. Just private school white families and academia... they don't see the need for cases like this. Nor do they understand it.

@10:05. That is a problem in the police society which I am a part of. When cops get fred for many reasons they need to also be decertified and made to start over again. Without this they just go down the road to another agency, who may be in a manpower crisis, and get hired. Problem isn't rectified it is just moved around the state.

And, it hasn't apparently occurred to one of you to imagine what a child goes through in life when one parent has killed the other. Do you EVER think of consequences ?

God Almighty, how did so few of you never learn that the power you get from a gun or brute strength is not as useful as the personal power you get from figuring out how to avoid the need for a gun? And, how did you become so lacking in empathy never to consider the consequences to innocent bystanders your use of guns as the first and only solutions?

We managed not to shoot the WHITE teenagers who vandalize mailboxes and cars all over town or the ones who tried but failed to sneak into our daughter's pajama party or the ones who threw beer cans in our yard or used our yard for a bathroom when partying next door. Good thing we found other ways to " teach them a lesson" because some of them may now be YOUR employers and all of them actually matured enough to become good citizens.

I find it hard to believe that none of you were stupid teens who engaged in risky behaviors that could have ended up these days as getting you killed. My guess is you didn't get caught and never matured and have convenient memory loss about what you were like.

Guns and violence get you death and suppression. It's quick and easy, but temporary. How'd you miss that in the '60's? Did you really only learn that pointed white hats looked silly?

Mostly white but plenty of other racial households as,well. My 2 brothers are in prison to this day and j understand these people that you don't. I graduated college and went to med school. It was hard but I managed. I laugh now at these elite libs trying to understand lower income demographics and how they think. Your way off.

And by the way, there are "privileged" (hate that term, but I'll mirror what you said for simplicity's sake) people of all races represented in the Fondren, Eastover, and Woodland Hills neighborhoods, as well as, at JA, Prep, and St. Andrews.

This was the same place where a pizza delivery driver was held up within the last year. Someone started shooting from across the street (red brick apartments) and a kid in one of the multi storied apartments was struck.

1:26pm This isn't Michigan and I hate to disappoint you, but I suspect I know more people of both races in the South that grew up poor or in section 8 housing or who are in prison and know more gritty details of their lives than you did from growing up in one project in Michigan.

And, I met a lot of bright. innately perceptive kids like you who, despite their families, managed to break the cycle. And, some of those kids, just like the " elites" I mentioned, went along to get along and survive and weren't always " law abiding". More than a few shop lifted some of their school supplies or food and some prostituted themselves. Hope you managed to avoid all that. Some got in good foster homes. Some didn't.

African Americans make up 15% of Michigan's population. It's 37% here. That affects racism, much of which is based in fear of revenge. The Civil Rights history in Michigan is quite different, especially when it comes to education. And, you haven't lived here very long if you don't get the cultural differences including the gun culture.

You ignored the points I made and chose instead to try to discredit my remarks. You missed entirely that this article is about domestic abuse. I suspect you saw domestic abuse if what you claim is true because abusing men often have little control in their lives other than beating the crap out of a woman dependent on them and physically weaker. Brawn and anger and guns are the only power they have and that is especially true in the slums.

I'm suggesting to you that you don't win the "hearts and minds" of those you try to overpower and abuse into submission. In the short run, they will cower and submit physically and do your will to avoid pain, but they will hate you and wait for the opportunity to escape or get even. That is human nature. Killing them works if they don't have anyone to remember or avenge them. Genocide works if you don't miss too many.

By the way, did you know that many far right groups are composed of those who come from white families that had little economic or social successes and are the first to have financial success? Lots of research on that trying to determine if it's seen as a pathway to acceptance or fear of what they gained being taken away.
