Flashback Friday

Today's edition of Flashback Friday will continue to look at Mississippi lynchings.   The Flashback Friday posts usually show stories, ads, and videos, and other items of nostalgia from Jackson's past.  However, Flashback Friday is delving into the darker side of Mississippi's past. Posted below are the Clarion-Ledger editorials on the subject from 1900-1909.

It is one thing to read about lynchings described in today's language. Statistics are often cited but they tend to numb the brain and all too often remain in the abstract.  It is altogether different to read about lynchings as they were reported at the time. Lynchings were reported with nary an editorial comment made against such savagery.  As stated last week, these posts don't do justice to the subject and apologies are made to those who have made a life's work out of fighting such injustice.  It is just a humble attempt to show the average reader how things were a long time ago.

1900
"Sentiment of the people is greater than judge or jury."
1903
A mob lynched three blacks after a white couple in Carrollton was brutally murdered with an ax.  Various newspapers took different stands on the lynching.

1901

1901
However, this editorial spoke against the anti-lynching crusade.

1901
This editorial made no bones about what it thought about lynching.

1900
While this editorial justified lynching.

1901

This editorial says it all.

However, this 1902 editorial suggested lynching the lynchers but such opinions were in the minority of the editorial pages of the state newspaper.

My father who died 13 years ago at the age of 84 grew up in Rural Hinds County. He told me that it was a crime for a Black man look directly into the eyes of a white woman when talking to her, and if he did he had better hope she did not take offense. If so, he would be at least whipped maybe killed. A "crime" for a Black man was whatever a White man said it was since law enforcement was official and unofficial. Without actual accounts such as these the history of such events would be completely denied.

In no way, shape or form am I condoning lynchings, whether then or now. That being said, when you consider how society operates / how we're forced to live today - vs. how society operated / how people lived back then - I submit that our criminal justice system might serve us much better by "operating" somewhere between then and now!

Ever heard of the St. Valentine's Day massacre? Yep, that's because it was scandalous back then....and that was a massacre amongst CRIMINALS! You have 7 people shot execution-style today, and the response is "meh. No big deal. Happens all the time!

I may not be in favor of ALL the prior "law enforcement" tactics from past times, but I'd be OK with a BIG helping of a lot of some other ones back in the day!

Where were these "lynchings that began a week ago"?

These are your parents and grandparents. What lessons were taught when you guys grew up under these animals?

And you wonder why black people don't trust you to this day?

Please note that the black men lynched were often accused of an "assault" on a white woman. Before you fix your mouth to justify these lynchings, you should understand what those murderers considered an "assault" to be.

Pitt and 12:47types...

Yes, some really bad things happened by a minute number of bad (re)acting people. However, my families (nor anyone I know) went around hanging/lynching people. Didn't buy em, hold em in chains, whip lashes upon em... etc.

There seems to be a carte blanche opinion that all white people were in on all that was done wrong in the past.

"Animals"?

Thanks for posting these, KF. Seeing the bland lies in newsprint helps us realize how these things could happen ... and ought to alert us to the bland lies of today’s news as it excuses atrocities.

2:37 ... the vast majority of white people accepted or endorsed it, which is the same as being “in on it.”

If racism isn’t a deal-breaker for you, that means you’re okay with it. Which is not materially different from being a racist.

Enjoy this season of grace and peace.

None of this happen, they worked magic with cameras back then too.

I am so tired of this "racism" bullshit. GDit grow up. Thousands are hiking thousands of miles to get here, and these tired old grandstanders keep bitching. Find a better country. contribute. contribute. contribute. Move there.

4:01 PM ... the vast majority of white people in the US never condoned slavery if that is what is being suggested. Read a little history. Southern plantation owning and slave trading elites were pro slavery for obvious reasons. Those elites manipulated the uneducated whites the same then as now.

I’ve never lynched or hung anyone in my life. So quit rubbing my nose in my ancestors shit and telling me I’m guilty. Can we not move on from this. Living in the past doesn’t seem to helping.

I think this is the 3rd week of lynching stories on the "Friday Flashback" around here, and it is indeed a sad part of MS history. To think the print media at the time created sensationalism with these articles is, at least to me, sickening. That being said, I'm pretty sure all 3 installments of this subject have included "The Taliaferro murders" story. So just who were these Taliaferro's around the turn of the century in Carrollton? I would think that's a fairly small surname as compared to say a Jones or a Smith. And you do realize their are "former" members of a Taliaferro family in local politics right here in Jackson. Is there a connection?

Some folks never had/have a chance, and some will never get it. Folks are ready to move from the past, and they will, when they see a future.

4:01, 2:37 here

Racism isn't a "deal-breaker" for me.

It seems to only consume those, like yourself, who state that every action or breath by others who don't agree with your scrip are the racists.

You could (should) note that vast responses wish the hell you'd get a life outside of your self-imposed shackles.

Sharpton and Jackson are not the only race hustlers. There are hundreds right here in our state. Many right here in the Metro. Others right in our towns. Double handfuls working for the media. College classrooms full of 'em. Some right down the street. One or two running blog sites.

Racism and stoking embers make money. There's an art to knowing exactly when to stoke a smoking ember.

When a loud-mouthed, angry man is just about to doze off, you poke him with a sharp stick and he bolts upright and starts right back up mouthing off angrily. If you're crafty enough, you can actually do this for about sixty years.

Well the old advertisements were interesting, and that’s about the size of it.
Stirring the pot with newspaper articles from around 120 years ago does nothing
But promote hate and racial distrust. I never owned a slave, never lynched anyone,
And neither did my Father or Grandfather so you can quit trying to lay a guilt trip on me
For being white.

KF Why don't you do some fair & balanced reporting? Let's see all the newspaper clipping of the Watt's, Chicago, & other big city riots by blacks. Black mob attacks burning, looting, & shooting firemen & police was very common in the 1960's. Were is that flashback? Has some racist black group called you on the carpet?

Well put 6:57 AM

I want my history. I want my heritage. But not like this...

Anonymous said...

9:07 Thank you. Yeah, I remember blacks killing whites at will and having the full cooperation of the government, law enforcement, and especially the media. Nobody went to jail! Black racists were in complete control. KF should get those newspaper clippings and publish them. That'll show 'em. And don't say you can't find it. Equal time.

Anonymous said...

12:18 Blacks controlled the newspapers too. Remember?

Anonymous said...

12:18 - It'll be rather easy. Just go back two years and gather up newspapers from Baltimore, Chicago and a few more select democrat cities. There were unrestricted riots, gunfire, cooperation of the government, law enforcement ordered to stand-down and, of course, the spin of the liberal media. Black racists were in complete control and were told they would not meet with opposition.

In fact the only difference in the current-day killings and shootings and bombings was the fact that the President of The United States encouraged and stoked the latter.

Now....kiss my ass and move the goal posts in 3...2...1.

Just so you know you can go to Twitter and there is limited censorship and the Twitter in Chief is much more interesting.

Speaking of Mississippi and Lynchings...Either they know who the culprits are or they lied about 'constant video surveillance of the grounds....

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
