They can ride their bikes in the Costco parking lot

@6:03 Thanks for making me spit sweet tea all over my keyboard hahahaha.

Also, what parent in their right mind would let their, im guessing by the image, 8 and 9 year old daughters ride bikes on Highland Colony Pkwy near the fruit loop?

They can ridge their bikes on the numerous biking trails that go along the Natchez trace. HC Parkway was never intended to be a biking trail for kids.

Anonymous said...

I was thinking the same thing @6:28. Kids shouldn't be anywhere near there riding their bikes.

Congrats to Ridgeland on attracting Cosco. A 1st class organization!

Precisely. Please tell the people that bike on the Parkway this. Annoying.

Can't wait till Cosco opens! They will beat Sams Club hands down.

People in Ridgeland are too stupid to: design a proper roundabout (it needs to be about 4 times larger in diameter) nor how to drive around one (it could be because that one is too small).

I suppose the snobs in $400k homes will protest like they did the mini sky scraper.

lol at the death of Ridgeland. Well, at least Sal and Phils is getting a new bar.

All of the trappings of a suburgatory border town.... Big box blight and little ones protesting the imminent doom of their once beloved paradise at a town hall meeting in the high school.
#bikeslivesmatter.

Gene McGee won't be happy until he has bike trails leading up to and through all the funeral homes in the Ridgeland-Madison area.

@7:16 Highland Colony has many signs acknowledging the city and this road as bike friendly. Me and many others cycle this road frequently and are glad the city promotes Mississippi's three foot law.

The people of Ridgeland are starting to look like a bunch of tea party coo coo birds, why all of a sudden the dislike of economic growth? It was fine when we moved here, but now its not fine. People move to an area, it creates consumer demand, stores show up. That's how it works. Up to now, the retail development of Ridgeland has been well done.

Anything to keep tax dollars in Ridgeland and out of the hands of Mary is good news to me.

I notice on the Facebook pages of news organizations that are reporting on this, where a person has to use their real name, there are positive pro-Costco comments. Unlike here, where I suspect the same 2 or 3 people are ranting and raving under the guise of anonymity. This is not a knock on JJ, just an observation.
I have a Costco membership. It is a great company. Regularly listed as one of the top places to work in the country. If Costco opened in Ridgeland, I would shop there tomorrow. As would, I can guarantee it, the St. Andrew's parents, the Butler Snow attorneys and their support staff, the Dinsmor, Greenwood Plantation, Bridgewater, Carlton Park etc crowd.
If people didn't picket the streets and get up in arms about Fresh Market and PF Chang's coming to town, I don't see what the problem is with a Costco.
There are no kids riding their bikes on HCP, and Costco isn't coming to Old Agency Road. As a taxpayer, I would welcome Costco, and I hope they do come.

Costco would increase traffic and prevent children from activities they may normally do in their neighborhood. Not to mention the fact that Costco will also hurt local Ridgeland merchants.

Wait, 15,000 people aren't againtst it?

The point is, she will NOT be able to safely GET to the bike path.

Ironic - no one at the meeting sends their children to Ridgeland High School. The school is now heavy majority black and Hispanic. The whites have moved to Madison, or send their kids to Madison - R School, St J, or St A.

Dear Neel Schaffer Enginneers. When you rebuild the roundabout, go to New Orleans and see how theirs are designed. You will see that there is no way a car going straight can proceed through one without having to make a turn to the right. A real turn. Because the failure of the one in Ridgeland ( and the old one at the airport) is that a speeding car simply had to swerve then correct to go through it. This renders the roundabout impotent and useless. Unless you are an Ole Miss engineer, no sane person would stamp the design as built.

You have your chance for fame and awards if you do the right thing

Sign me: shaking my head at the ignorance of the people that built the interchange at Old Agency Road

5 spandexed fools were backing up traffic on Old Agency Pkwy last evening, with a perfectly good bike trail parallel to them. Arrogant bicycle riders are going to create a backlash one day ... if they live so long.

@ 7:05 AM - Have you ever tried to ride a bike on the "bike trail". Actually, it's a multi-use trail. You have people walking in the middle of the trail 2 wide or walking their dogs that zigzag all over the trail. I can't tell you how many dogs I've nearly hit. The point is that it is almost impossible to ride on those trails because you are constantly slowing down to avoid people who don't stay to the right.

Anonymous said...

@ 7:57 AM - So you're saying that people walking on the bike trail cause similar problems for bicyclists as bicyclists riding on busy streets cause drivers. Good to know

Anonymous said...

@ 7:05 - I have driven down Old Agency Pkwy every day for the last 8 years and have never seen traffic backed up, much less behind any cyclist. I do think traffic will back up at Old Agency Pkwy and HC once Costco is built. If a cyclist does slow you down for a minute or two once in a while, appreciate their efforts to stay healthy and active!!

" I have driven down Old Agency Pkwy every day for the last 8 years and have never seen traffic backed up, much less behind any cyclist."

Then you're very, very lucky (or something). I was in a line of 8 or 9 cars held up because the bikes + oncoming traffic wouldn't let us advance.

It would not kill these Lance Armstrongs to show some courtesy & pull over onto the shoulder & pedal there for a minute to let traffic pass. But they're all about their Right to the Road. Yes, the law allows them to do that. Laws can be changed.

8:48 - gold medal for applied logic!

I've been wondering what all that dirt work and heavy equipment were for in front of Trustmark at Steed and Highland Colony. Now I see it's just another Gene McGee-D.I.Young bike trail-leg. Meanwhile, the weeds are six feet tall on the north side of Jackson Street in Downtown Ridgeland.

Why should Ridgeland taxpayers underwrite private development risk for Bailey Mattice? Start the 'Bridge to Nowhere' round-a-bout development with 30,000,000 from MDA to private developers via TIFs; when Bailey Mattice fails to meet cash flow, or tires debt service, call Mayor--- shift private debt to pockets of local taxpayers. Heck, Gene may have sold Bailey Mattice 3million in term life policies before Bailey Mattice cut the deal with Manning McPhillips & MDA. Mr. McPhillips is Senator Wicker's son-in-law, whose wife is a Butler Snow lobbyist, and whose brother-in-law, Kirk Sims, is chief Yates Construction lobbyist.

Associating Costco around-a-bout protestors in Ridgeland with Tea Party & 'conservative extremists'? Stop smoking synthetic canabinoids --- try physician ordered Prozac & 12 step meetings.

Anyone who allows, much less encourages children to ride a bike on Highland Colony parkway should be jailed and/or fined.

Ridgeland is toast. It never had a chance. Every middle class resident that could afford it has left and moved to Madison for the schools. They've been replaced with the Jackson residents who will vote like Jackson residents. You millionaires on your white island on the West side have a lot more to worry about than Costco coming to town.

Ridgeland needs to develop and enforce strict HOA policies, stop accepting any HUD vouchers and raise rents to a minimum of $1200 for a 900 sq. foot home/apt. Collect all deposits in a lump sum (no "can I have a payment plan" stories is a BIG RED FLAG.) Don't fall for it ever, because they won't be able to afford the rent if they aren't able to save for a deposit. Explain to EVERY prospective tenant their verifiable income fom lasts years tax return and 4 most recent paystubs must be a minimum of 3 times the monthly rent. Run a credit check to see if they've been to court for previous evictions. Remember that you can have bad credit and still be a good tenant, IF the all of the other factors check out okay. Make sure that you personally call their employers human resource department- NOT THEIR BOSS, to verify their work history. Do criminal record checks. Allow no felons, sex offenders, or those with violent misdemeanors to rent. (This is legal as long as you run record checks on ALL prospective applicants that are over 18 that will reside in the home) If a boyfriend moves in at anytime, and you will know if he does, he must have a background check done. The city must charge the landlords, who can in turn charge the renters a $100 inspection fee. Only allow the children initially listed on the lease to live there. During the school year, check with the schools to see if your tenant is allowing a friend/relative to use your property address so their child can attend your schools. These ideas may seem harsh, but that's how to get good renters and keep the trash out. Treat every applicant equally and with respect and you'll never have a problem.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
