Hinds Junior College is closing the 18-hole Eagle Ridge golf course. President Dr. Stephen Vacik announced on Facebook:
For many years, the golf course has been more than just a recreational facility. It has been a gathering place for friends, families, alumni, students and community members. Generations have learned the game here, enjoyed fellowship, and created memories that are deeply connected to both the course and our college. Because of that history, I want to share some important news directly and transparently. After extensive review and careful consideration, the college has made the difficult decision to cease golf course operations. This decision was not made lightly. We recognize the important role the course has played in our community and understand that many of you will be disappointed by this announcement. We share those feelings. The course has been a valued part of our institution for many years, and we appreciate the loyalty and support shown by our patrons throughout its history. As we evaluate the future of the college, we must ensure that our financial resources are aligned with our core mission of providing accessible, high-quality educational opportunities for our students. While the golf course has served as a meaningful community asset, it requires a significant institutional investment, and we have reached a point where we must prioritize resources toward areas that more directly support student success and the long-term sustainability of the college.More Information Here: https://eagleridge.hindscc.edu/eagle-ridge-golf-course

Unfortunately for the golf course, it's located in the wrong county (among the counties served by HCC's footprint). The resources required to maintain it are better utilized elsewhere in the footprint ..... [/wink].
Eagle Ridge was a well-run facility.
The Prado Bunkers comment was hilarious.
Do I smell a new development…Data Center, Solar Farm, etc…
Hinds will be under a significant audit soon. The money funny like improv
Considering how the Rankin County Board of Supervisors have contributed the appropriate funds to build on the Pearl Campus, I am wondering if the Hinds County BoS didn't want to or couldn't? Should the HCC administration just not build and grow where they are supported, or do people expect them to whither and die since Hinds is in their name?
Hinds CC is transitioning all it's non-Raymond facilities to other counties. The entire nursing/health care operation moved from South Jackson to Pearl in August.
But where are the inmates at the Raymond Jail going to play golf?
Doesn't pass the smell test. All that spent on the new watering system and greens ? And you aren't gonna see if this helps the revenue stream ? Bottom line is that this golf course will not close and will no longer be "owned" by HCC. Lanny Watkins.....Uncle Ted.....plenty of suiters out there.
Maybe if the board of supervisors would raise hinds county property taxes just a little bit, the golf course could afford the much needed improvements.
The real question is whether the golf course is generating enough revenue to cover operating expenses. If it is then there is no reason to close it. I have always thought the area around the lake would make a nice subdivision. The school should try to generate regular revenue from this property and not just sell it to a developer.
I think I smell palm grease.
Is the adjacent conference center closing too?
They have lots of experience doing just that.
Is the adjacent Raymond Jail closing too?
The golf course was likely losing too much money to continue. However, if we are concerned about losing money, all Mississippi JUCO athletic programs should be eliminated. No way they are generating any revenue but are incurring major expenses.
12:29 losing money or not, Mississippi has one of, if not the, best JUCO programs in the nation. That never needs to be squashed. Figure out how to make it work. Our JUCO programs are solid and one of the most underrated things this state has going for it.
In response to multiple comments....
Several athletic teams at HCC lose more money than the golf course.
Who cares how good juco sports are? All juco sports should be eliminated. They used to be for getting athletes academically qualified to play D1 but now that there's basically no admissions standards in D1 any more, juco sports are a waste of time and money.
Hinds CC and Hinds CC in Raymond are doing just fine. Campus is still beautiful. You guys need to get over all of the territorialism.
I hope somebody makes a go out of the golf course before it closes. Look at Live Oaks as an example. Its booming after decades of neglect.
Mayor Horhn, pay attention. Note how competent institutional leadership responds when an asset badly under-performs. Competent institutional leadership acknowledges reality and stops the bleeding by CLOSING THE UNDER-PERFORMING ASSET.
I will never understand why KF is such a censoring low-IQ fraud when Reddit, ZH, and 4chan allow much more free speech. Just institute a Comment takedown policy and use a gemini agent to mute and review comments. It’s shrimple but apparently you aren’t intelligent enough for basic Gemini prompting.
I went there last November and the greens were in absolutely awful shape. Some of them only had half the grass on the green.
The Juco system has a few purposes 1) minor league athletics for D1 ball, 2) a place where you can get a decent education for less money (this is good), and 3) remediating kids who were failed by the K-12 system.
Heard from another golfer last fall that several greens were destroyed by kids on ATV’s. I’m sure this didn’t help matters.
Why can't the course be turned over to a contractor? They could run it like a country club with memberships.
Yea, imagine a golf course that was actually pretty decent and was operating somewhat successfully is closing but the zoo remains open. Guess caged rodents are more worthy of support than free range.
How about a transfer of ownership to the MSU golf program?
It was well run sometimes. A few bad hires can kill a course.
Hinds CC building in Rankin Co., And look at the building Holmes CC is doing in Madison County. The institutions are going where their students are and hopefully will attend. The Raymond campus has been having issues with attendance for years. Drive by the campus on a school day and see the number of empty parking lots. The town of Raymond is so dependent on the college that this closure hurts. However, the college can’t afford to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on a golf course when there are other needs. If the course was financially viable other investors would be interested, but it is not. Many hurt feelings and many memories but nothing is forever.
I've played that course since the mid 80's, but only 3 times in the last 5 years. I played in July with an 8:00 tee time. It was in as bad a shape as I've ever seen. Too many temporary greens. The best part of that day was seeing the friends I played with for the first time in 6 months..
“ Compared to fall of 2025, Hinds enrollment on the Rankin Campus is up 5%, from 1,286 to 1,354 students. The expansion of health sciences training capacity will allow the school to welcome an additional 480 students over the next three years to further support the region’s healthcare workforce needs.”
That’s a direct quote from a HCC press release in August 2026. Raymond campus is still much larger and prettier.
But the area can’t support a golf course. It’s been losing money for decades.
Wink what? Are you suggesting Hinds CC put a golf course in Rankin to try to compete with Patrick Farms, Refuge and Niknar? That would be asinine. How about colleges stick to educating?
If you are looking for alternative to Eagle Ridge for an inexpensive round of golf give Pearl Municipal Golf Course a try. It is in better condition than Eagle Ridge.
Isn't Golf supposed to be UPPER CLASS? - for people with nothing - and I mean NOTHING else to do with their time? My image is of Jane Hathaway lookalikes, and men who can afford to look like dog turds, whiling-away the hours, dressed as badly as is humanly possible, obsessing over 'game scores' (because they have trust fund managers obsessing over their money, for them). ...having their skin destroyed by the sun, because they're so rich they can afford to be hideous, and thus guaranteed to always be "loved for themselves"?
OK... and for people trying to INVADE the Upper Class. So, would a Junior College, an institution established for training individuals to enter Lower Middle Class careers, be offering Golf? ... as a way for its members to schmooze the right people? Or is there a major, at Hinds, in something like 'Golf Course Management'? ...or 'Golf Club Management'? ...or Golf Facilities Installation'? ....'Greenskeeper Science'?
Full Sail University probably has a 'Professional Golf Caddy' major. But Hinds surely is better than that.
I know that, TODAY, there are GOLF SLUMS, catering to Lower Middle Class men who somehow have money to burn. Flipping channels, I saw some of them driving around Hawaii, pulling into a golf slum "suites" complex, looking like those HUD apartment complexes built for redundant rural Mississippians - wallboard & tarpaper exteriors - no trees - no shrubbery - in Hawaii, where one expects saturation-planted frangipani & palms & hibiscus.
TODAY, of course, in a world where cruise ships have become floating slums, and jumbo jets have become slums-'o-the-skies, we should not be surprised that Golf would become something similar.
But I assume that Hinds' Golf facilities are decades-old. What was the thinking, back then? It doesn't make sense. Someone, please enlighten me.
