Sid Salter: Telle's Appointment Makes Mississippi's Robust Defense Influence Even Stronger

President Donald Trump’s appointment of Mississippi State University alumnus and former Thad Cochran adviser Adam Telle as Acting Secretary of the Army carries significance well beyond his personal achievements. For the first time in years, Mississippi finds itself positioned near the center of America’s national defense establishment, with influence extending across military policy, defense spending and executive leadership.

The most appropriate comparison is former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus, whom President Barack Obama appointed Secretary of the Navy in 2009. During nearly eight years in that post, Mabus served as the Navy’s top civilian leader, overseeing both the Navy and the Marine Corps, and became one of the most recognizable figures in the Pentagon. Telle’s path to the Pentagon was considerably different.
Rather than rising through elective office, he built his career on Capitol Hill. After graduating from Mississippi State University – serving as student body president, Telle spent more than a decade in Cochran’s Senate office as one of Cochran’s key advisers on national security, disaster recovery and appropriations matters. He later served as Trump’s chief Senate liaison at the White House and most recently held the Senate-confirmed position of Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.
The distinction between Mabus and Telle matters. Mabus was nominated by a president and confirmed by the Senate to serve permanently. Telle currently serves in an acting capacity following the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. Yet that difference should not obscure the larger political reality. Mississippi now has a seat at virtually every major table where defense decisions are made.
Sen. Roger Wicker serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, arguably Congress’s most important defense panel. The committee writes the National Defense Authorization Act and helps shape military policy, planning and procurement.
At the same time, following the death of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham and a subsequent committee reorganization, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith moved into the leadership role on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. That assignment places a Mississippi senator in the congressional process responsible for funding military operations, weapons systems and defense infrastructure.
In practical terms, Wicker helps determine what defense programs are authorized, while Hyde-Smith helps determine which programs receive funding. One oversees policy. The other helps oversee spending.
Add Telle’s position inside the executive branch, and Mississippi's presence in national security circles becomes difficult to overstate.
That influence matters because Mississippi’s military and defense footprint is substantial. The state is home to Keesler and Columbus Air Force bases, Camp Shelby, Stennis Space Center, Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding on the Gulf Coast, and a growing network of military contractors, aerospace firms, and research operations. The Army Corps of Engineers also plays a significant role in Mississippi’s flood-control, navigation and water-resource projects. Telle is well acquainted with those issues through both his congressional work and his leadership of Army Civil Works.
The more intriguing question, however, concerns not today’s appointment but tomorrow’s prospects. At present, Telle is the Acting Secretary of the Army. The acting designation gives the administration time to evaluate its long-term options
That reality makes the 2026 midterm elections especially relevant. If Republicans retain control of the Senate, Telle would appear well-positioned should President Trump decide to nominate him. If Democrats gain control of the Senate, the political landscape changes. Committee leadership would shift, confirmation hearings would be conducted by different chairmen, and administration nominees could face more rigorous scrutiny.
Regardless of how that question is ultimately resolved, Telle’s appointment arrives at a remarkable moment in Mississippi political history. With Wicker shaping defense authorization, Hyde-Smith helping to direct defense appropriations, and Telle serving as the Army’s top civilian official on an interim basis, Mississippi’s voice in national security matters is arguably stronger than at any point since the era of John Stennis, Thad Cochran, and Trent Lott.
For a state that has long relied on seniority, expertise and strategic committee assignments to amplify its influence in Washington, this is a rare convergence of political power. Mississippi is not simply participating in the national defense conversation. For the moment, it is helping write the agenda.

Was Telle head aide ? The one that helped Thad shuffle around the Capitol for three years ? The one who was actually in charge.

Can't believe that ol' Sid didn't remind us, again, that Warmonger Wicker is a supposed military expert.

Sadly, the difference should be " between the ears", truly learning to know what you don't know and the work ethics to figure out the best options for our NATION, not for our party's popularity and electability. Wicker is smart enough but unless we elect those who can speak truth to power and honorable enough to put the United States and it's security first, above party and self, they are just unethical cowards! PS The Speaker makes $223,500 a year and the other leaders make $1193400. They have perks like free food. They have pensions and death benefits. The worst is they can grant death benefits to family while they are still alive! That's cost us from 2000 to 2025 $7million. Then there's still the problem of benefitting from " inside information". The " blind trust" has more holes than a sieve. ZERO family members should be able to invest on the behalf of the President or any member of Congress, nor should they be able to get more than quarterly reports. We operate more like a Kingdom with no parliaments, just loyal princes, dukes and barons and with justice no longer being blind or balancing scales. Worse, the fools among us think it's a game and don't realize pawns are always sacrificed!

$40 trillion debt. $2 trillion annual deficit. Over 80% of government spending is defense, interest on debt, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The day of reckoning is fast approaching.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
