Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
Shortly after 7:00am this morning, a Deputy with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department who is assigned as the School Resource Officer at McLaurin Schools was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic.
The Deputy has since been released from an area hospital and is recovering at home.
Thank you to everyone who prayed and thought of him and his family this morning.
The MS Hwy Patrol is investigating the incident.

Another texting accident?
Seems obvious to me that was deliberate.
Hope he is ok. I live in this area, and the speeding on Star Road is out of control. I am constantly passed while driving the speed limit. Even Highway Patrol Officers pass me routinely. They have meetings on Monday or Tuesdays, at The law enforcement academy, and will pass you with complete disregard for the law and public safety. It’s happened to me many times.Need an unmarked vehicle officer on Star Road for a couple of weeks. You would be shocked at the number of tickets written, including the number of Highway Patrol officers who would be ticketed if enforcement doesn’t give them a pass on their speeding.
I support the blue, but I fail to see why the blue are allowed to drive 40 miles over any speed limit to buy a soda.
Bless the driver's distracted heart. Whoever she was.
The driver should lose their license for at least five years, maybe that will be long enough to learn not to Facebook and drive.
10:08, where are you passed on Star Road?? the only area you can pass in down in the Tumbaloo Creek Bottom at Jack McRae's old place! The rest of the road is like a malaria Germ! Granted it is not as bad as State Road 469, but it is still bad!
11:35. In flat area of Star Road past Garth Farm many times, coming up on Shell Oil Rd many times, even in McLaurin School zone when school was not open. If you doubt my word, drive from Brandon to Star, at the posted speed limit, you will believe me. I drive to Star about two times a week to visit an old friend.
The whole damn road (471/StarRd) should be 55MPH, much like Midway and Springridge in Hinds county. The 50, 40, & 35 MPH changes seem arbitrary. The 30MPH school zone is appropriate during beginning and ending the school day, but the flashing lights are often mistimed. Nonetheless, whoever was driving through there and struck that SRO should be charged with whatever they can make stick. Classic example of DISTRACTED DRIVING, no excuse for hitting a high-vis pedestrian while he’s directing traffic. I hope the teachers/administrators who are often out there (and in other school zones) helping get more PPE.
