The Crescent City is a far cry from what it was when it was the third largest city and gateway to American commerce. Step back in time to the 1920's to see the city when it still enjoyed some of its past glory.
If you really want to enjoy reading about New Orleans in its heydey, check out Lafcadio Hearn. He was a columnist for the New Orleans newspapers from 1877 to 1888 before moving to Japan. He described the New Orleans of the late 1800s as few could, in a time when the old French families still ruled the city. The book posted below is a collection of his work in New Orleans.

Shit hole now.
My how times have changed what was once a great city.
The story of American cities. Built great and total rot now.
I feel sorry for the bumpkins that know of New Orleans only from their visits to Bourbon Street. The city remains one of the three best for dining in the US and there are historical treasures that take weeks to take in.
I still love NOLA and enjoy The Roosevelt Hotel and The French Quarter! The Garden District is as beautiful as ever. I think some of you never have been there or are too cheap to stay in nice hotels!
The story of America in whole.....diseased with parasites because it's people lack the courage of their convictions to appropriately cleanse itself in favor of expressing suicidal empathy for "others".
What is “appropriately cleanse itself”? Let’s all take a spa day!!!
I've stayed multiple times in the four finest. I probably said 'thank you' as your tipped your cap and held the door for me.
Going into 1840 New Orleans was the center of global commerce. The land of milk and honey. The family disagreement that followed had nothing to do with the self righteous, sanctimonious, indignation that was served up. It was about money.
Speaking of that war, Jackson looks like Sherman just blew through last week, backed up by no kings color revolutionaries and Muslim mercenaries.
Everything that the lefties touch turns to shit.
If you don’t like New Orleans great! Stay out.
But Gomorrah has such a special, magnetic attraction.
Yeah, everyone negative posting here has never ventured south of Poydras or outside the Quarter. They think Ruby Slipper and the Krystal on Bourbon is the finest dining available. New Orleans is the only walkable city in the South, and a top 5 food destination in the US. Hell it has one of the best zoos and children's museums within driving distance from the Metro Area if you wanted a family outing.
I used to think this was just a place for Madison people to bash on Jackson, but apparently anywhere that's outside of Mrs. Mary's bubble is scary!
New Orleans is the greatest city in America. You can bash it all you want for having the same corruption and infrastructure problems as every major city in America. However, it offers a cultural and entertainment factor that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. I've met people in NO from all across Europe, every state in America, and countless others from South America who can't wait to take it all in. Likewise, I've traveled the world and anytime you bring up New Orleans in conversation to someone in their home country they can't wait to tell you their New Orleans story with a smile on their face.
If you're too scared to take a trip to New Orleans stay in Madison "The City". New Orleans, a true American gem of a city, isn't catering to you, nor changing for you.
I love New Orleans and visit often.
I am careful and aware of my surroundings when in any touristy area. But the city is still amazing compared to Jackson and I am thankful it is such a close and easy trip.
I love New Orleans. I usually visit once a year and dine on delicious fare and stroll through the French Quarter. Christmas is my favorite time to go because it's cooler and much less crowded.
I have lived in New Orleans for 15 years, moving there after 40+ years in Mississippi. The quality of my life has skyrocketed in every conceivable way, and the only regret I have is that I didn't move there sooner. Most of you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. It's one of the world's great cities.
Anyone who thinks New Orleans is a "shithole" now has obviously not spent much time there. Or spent all of their time in the wrong part of the city.
There is plenty to do without going to the Quarter. There is the WW2 Museum. They get real Broadway shows down there. There is the New Orleans Museum of Art with Monets, Degas, Renoirs, Picassos, and other masters. There is the Chevron Sculpture Garden, which is a real treat. Then of course there are the parks and the zoo.
