Check out what Jackson mayoral candidate Zachary Servis suggested on Facebook:
Today I will be offering public comments at the city council meeting to request a pay increase for the council members. Many people may not realize that a council person only receives a salary of about $25,000 a year. With the amount of work that they are required to do and the amount of time that it takes to truly be an effective council person, I think it is ridiculous that our mayor receives a salary of $120,000 while the council people receives a minute fraction of it.In order to secure a better future for our city and in order to guarantee that those who serve our wards as council people can meet the needs of their family and our city, I am requesting that the council vote to increase their salaries to no less than $40,000 a year, but preferably 45,000 or more.In addition to this I would like to see an alternative plan to move the council position to full-time and a salary of $70-$75,000 be proposed. I believe this would allow our council to be much more effective and attract better candidates if they know they won’t risk not being able to pay their bills if they serve our city.We have about 75 days to make this change legally. If we don’t act now we will have to wait another 4 years to change salaries. I encourage you all to call your councilman or woman and tell them you want to see this brought to the agenda and approved.
Don't forget a brand-new SUV for each Council member. They have to inspect their wards, you understand.

Would this make it less likely they take bribes?
Do I detect palms, greasy palms, in the future?
Hey, give them each a pick up and since they’re full time they could ride around their wards and PICK UP THE DAMN TRASH.
At a minimum he should know the law. They can change salaries any time they please.
No money for the run down fire stations to be repaired, but there's money for raises for city councilmen. Ha Ha Ha
Grizzel gets 25K as a councilman in addition to his “job” in JPS? How does he do both jobs at the same time? Aren’t they both during the day a good bit of the time?
There is a legitimate argument for paying to attract talent. That being said the mayor's $120,000 salary didn't stop him from taking money from a corrupt DA.
The whole concept of elective public service is to SERVE, regardless of the compensation. Actually, in spite of the compensation.
isn't that what the FBI does? add a little extra!!!
"He should know the law" MS Code states (21-8-21) "(1) The mayor and the members of the council shall be qualified electors of the municipality. The compensation for the mayor and the members of the council shall be set by the council. After the salaries of the first mayor and first council have been determined by the council of any municipality electing to come under the provision of this chapter, such salaries shall be effective immediately. Thereafter, any increases or decreases in the salary for the mayor or councilmen may be authorized by the council at any time prior to ninety (90) days before the next general election for the selection of municipal officers. Such increases or decreases shall not become effective until the next elected mayor and council takes office."
That last line is very important.
Funny he wants to increase the salaries of the very same job he is considering running for.
Grizzell has a big grocery bill.
The notion that anyone in charge of this corrupt crime ridden hole should receive a raise is absolute lunacy. There are a lot of good, decent, hard working people in Jackson in all wards who deserve people at the helm who make good decisions. Every one of the current asshats in charge fall short in every way. 25 grand a year is way too much money.
City of Madison aldermen makes more than that
They have money for salaries but not building repairs?
Effective date doesn't negate fact they can change salaries at any time. Naïve for Servis to think an incumbent running for re-election is going to hurry through a massive salary bump such as he proposes in the few weeks before an election. He is correct though that Lumumba is grossly overpaid.
Rightfully so.
$120k isn't that much anymore
Will he vote to bailout any Mayor time after time as Virgi did again this week?
Can a refund be given for the allegedly corrupt city council and mayor? Jackson needs the money for more cameras to catch the criminals.
"City of Madison aldermen makes more than that "
Compare the results - we get our money's worth in Madison.
Their current $25,000 is only $1000 less than the median income for the whole city. $40,000 is only $2000 less than household median income.
Here is a novel idea. Why don’t the council people in Jackson move to Madison, run for office, and take advantage of the higher wages?
why don't the city council vote to reduce the mayor's salary & then divide the savings among themselves? Or better yet spend it on the city proper. Or reduce the mayor's pay to $1 per year. The options are endless!
I think they should get free lodging at some select fire stations.
$120,000 still puts you in top 92 percentile in Mississippi. To say you can't live lavishly on 120k especially in MS is nuts. That doesn't even include what Mrs. Lumumba (not Rukia) makes. You have to add her salary to his to get a household number.
These are GREAT ideas. Run out of town the only people paying taxes. Economics 101 should have taught you that if you made it that far.
New mayor, same as old mayor?
4:34 please elaborate as to how Virgi bailed Mayor out this week please?
And therein lies the problem (as 8:06 PM points out with a ?).
Democrats can’t fail badly enough for their poor constituents to vote the Democrat Party out of office in inner cities like Jackson, or states like California, with a majority gene pool lacking basic 2+2=4 common sense.
They cannot resist falling for the race hustling bait from grifters - and the white liberal Democrats Malcom X warned us all about 6 decades ago - that back said grifters with articles about robot loyal Yellow Dog Democrats, segregation, state flags, and all of the other decades all non-issues that keeps the poor sheep living with crime and chaos Democrats use to keep anyone from moving in that will vote them out of office.
Their hands are burned completely off, yet, they just KEEP TOUCHING THAT RED HOT STOVE EYE.
The City Council serves part time. The Mayor's job is full time. If either feels the job should pay more, they should know how to request that given the responsibilities they do have. Please look at the requirements for both positions.
There’s an argument to be made that more money will attract more competent people. I wouldn’t deal with that crap for $25. Maybe not for $45k. There’s what 7 wards in Jackson? That’s $140k a year to possibly get more competent people? He’s not entirely wrong
"Naïve for Servis to think an incumbent running for re-election is going to hurry through a massive salary bump such as he proposes in the few weeks before an election."
This from above pretty much sums it up.
Mr. Servis should get elected first, then win the legislative day while a sitting member of the Council.
Mayor of Brandon with an unbelievable population of just under 30,000 people has a salary of 115,000
How much raw sewage is Brandon dumping into the Pearl River?
It’s laughable to hear republicans in Mississippi, or virtually any southern state, comment about democrats running things in the ground, since they have been in charge of the state nationally, and most cities and municipalities and boards locally for over 25 years now. HMMMM.
10:33,
Where would Jackson be without the State expanding the Cap Police and where would Jackson be without the State stepping in along with others to do something about the water in late summer 2022?
