It appears MHSAA does not want Mississippi athletes competing at the national level. Check out Rule 7.22 in the 2023-2024 handbook.
Just to make sure everyone gets the point, the rule says MHSAA "vigorously opposes" Mississippi students competing for national championships. The message: Be good, but don't be too good.

So, no AAU basketball outside of Mississippi? No travel soccer or baseball competition outside of Mississippi? 18 year old track star can't run Boston Marathon?
What about a kid who qualifies for the Olympics?
This organization needs to be dissolved, and a new one put in its place. I am all for protecting the kids, but this is ridiculous!
Absolutely asinine policy. All under the guise of "protect the children." Give me a break.
I think this rule is as old as me. It appears to have been made when educators actually cared about the kids.
Everything they say is true. Admit it. Special privileges, priority of jock chest beaters over scholars. Etc. That's everyday in the bottom ranked state. The Big Lie is that sports is secondary to academics here.
It's just out loud laughable that they claim this, as fewtbawl and BBall thugs can literally get away with murder. As long as they don't get a national championship.
Remind us again which state responds to derision that we are bottom ranked academically with "but look at how many NFL guys we got!"
Soothing words. Reality is that it's a lie as to Bball and Fewtbawl already, but apparently applies to our track and field athletes, from which we have had Olympic Gold and nationally ranked milers and sprinters.
Good grief.
attendance rules already in place take care of 99.99% of this. Its just a money grab
Nobody ever said the people at the MHSAA are smart as a sack of hammers. This is just their "hey, look what I stepped in" moment.
As 10:39 indicated, we already have teams and individuals competing outside the state in baseball, 7 on 7 football, basketball , travel Soccer, club swimming, golf, archery?
There's a higher authority in the MS public school system that should step up and fix this. After all, if this is an acceptable position, shouldn't it extend beyond athletics? If students excel at academics should they be banned from national competitions such as spelling bees?
How does a regular person get the MHSAA rules? Are they online?
FYI: Same rule 7.22 appears in the MSHAA 2022-2023 handbook available online.
Here is my position:
1. Parental decision
2. Parental decision
3. Parental decision
4. Parental decision
End of discussion.

Under this rule, if your child is a once-in-a-generation athlete, you should attend private school or leave the state. Because we cannot let athletics get in the way of teaching the test.
Andrew Brown would be well within his rights and reject all scholarship offers from Mississippi universities. He frankly owes the state nothing after this mess.
Just wait until ESPN calls asking questions.
How many MSHAA bubbas can fit through the exit door in 30 seconds?
#ESPN
I actually agree with the underlying premises of the rule.
But any policy is only as good as the dipshits who carry it out. Who we put in leadership positions matters.
Like the poor kid who is too embarrassed to go to the party with the rich kids we should have a handy excuse to explain why we don't compete nationally. Something like, "We have a conflict with our exam schedule". We are the po' kids aren't we?
This is pretty ridiculous. Perhaps a high school in TN or AL would be more accommodating. If he is as good as it is appearing, he might end up an Oregon Duck anyway.
MSHAA: People come for the athletics but stay for the academics!
Our longtime emphasis on academics exemplified by rules like this is why Mississippi is nationally known for its scholarship. Let us not lose our reputation.

That bears repeating! You've encapsulated all that matters, in this situation. And the same could be said about about a great many other organizations/associations/governmental bodies, which were formed to serve, but have devolved to ENSLAVE.
Consider, for example, what, since 2020, we've come to realize about the Medical Industry.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! We have a winner!
Funny story on Woodrow Marsh, the man I paid homage to by using his name in the original post. Dr. Marsh was executive director of MHSAA in the late 70s/early 80s, and before that was superintendent of schools in Cleveland, Mississippi. One morning there was a light snow in Cleveland and a Cleveland High School student called the local radio station, WCLD, claiming to be Woodrow Marsh and informed the station all schools were closed for the day. The radio station broadcast the closing, and by the time school officials became aware of it the damage was done; there was mass chaos and many absences. Afterwords, Dr. Marsh setup a password he would use so the station would know it was him calling.
Which has the least value? NCAA or MSHAA?
10 or 12 prominent universities leave the NCAA----NCAA will be nothing but an afterthought
Same with MSHAA
It doesn’t seem fair that kids that play other sports can compete nationally on club/travel/AAU teams and this kid cannot compete nationally. Just one in a list of things that don’t make sense about this ruling.
MHSAA = Money Hungry School Activity Association.
MHSAA = Money Hungry Self-Absorbed Aholes
MHSAA has already lost many track and field athletes as well as good baseball softball basketball and soccer players due to this no travel team and limiting the number of kids that can perform on a high school team from the same AAU travel basketball team or soccer club. Cheer has already quit mhsaa stuff as the dance and cheer teams have athletes that prefer travel over school teams
They’re running the talent off by this. They’re forcing them to choose and they’re choosing travel and AAU teams
There will always be a problem with adults, including parents, exploiting talented children.
Some will push them beyond their physical capabilities and risk their health or see them as a future financial source.
But, it's interesting to me that these proclamations aren't extended to the cheerleaders or the majorettes or bands where physicality and performing in the poor conditions outdoors aren't a concern.
We hold an International Ballet competition with competitors who are not over 18.
We see marathons run here. Do they check to see if public high school Mississippians are running? Or do they assume they aren't and don't care about young people in general and would only "punish" a winner?
And, of course, there's swimming. As pointed out, just as there are no indoor tracks in Mississippi, there are no pools, inside or out.
We have Mississippi athletes in the Olympic games. Did our star from Gulfport High get such scrutiny? Or how about the one from Oxford high school? Oh ...wait ...they were women!
AG...shouldn't you care about these girls?
The hypocrisy and stupidity and corruption that infect this state are stunning.
Anyone want to tell NWR, Brandon, Oak Grove and Desoto about this rule? Seems like they all won a national championship in cheer fairly recently.
