Coach Prime Lays Down the Law

Coach Prime took the Buffalos by the horns today and spelled out the new reality for his new team.  Good luck to the player who dares bring a cell phone to a team meeting.   Coach Prime went old school as he told his new young charges he was going to run off the quitters.  Watch for yourself.

However, Coach Sanders may encounter some difficulty in raiding rosters.  USA Today reported:

Colorado watched several top players depart and despite that creating ample opportunity in Boulder, the Buffs haven’t come close to making up for their losses. Nothing here is black and white, but the unique academic requirements to transfer into CU appears to be a major factor and one that has been exposed in recent months.

Chancellor Phil DiStefano's response to why Colorado has struggled to bring in transfers:

“I don’t think it is a matter of altering any of the rules and policies. I believe that you can have excellent academics and excellent student-athletes coming together. They are not mutually exclusive.

“On the transfer piece, it is just based upon the degrees we offer. And the way that faculty own the curriculum, they own the degrees so when a student wants to transfer, for example, we do not have physical education here, and we do not have general education, and to be honest, that’s not going to change....

Simply put, CU doesn’t offer certain programs that are popular among student-athletes....

The percentage of non-graduate transfers who can successfully find their way through the CU admissions office is painfully low. Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.com reported that CU coaches submitted a list of 11 wide receiver transfer candidates for academic appraisal this past offseason, only four came back with approval for CU with permission to recruit.... Rest of article.

I can’t believe there are people still naive enough to still think D1 football is played by teams of student-athletes. It’s a quaint concept they are holding on to, but nowadays that’s true only at the three service academys. All other teams are mercenaries hired by universities, with possibly a sprinkling of student-athletes. The NCAA should abandon the charade, pay players, and quit requiring them to go to class.

His opening remarks to his new team sounded great, very similar to many sports movies we’ve seen.
How this morphs into the real world is the question considering the potential, or lack thereof, for acquiring talent through the transfer portal with the Colorado academic caveat.
I will be paying attention for a while to see the fruits of his labor. I assume his son is the new QB.

"Hey everybody on social media, look at me. I'm prime time."

He Gone. Let it go.

Can Prime pick up Chockway from the transfer portal? His NIL won't cost much - a silver pocket square, 3-piece purplish suit from the mall outlet, a trim for the graybeard 2 x week and a dictionary for the 3 syllable words.

The next few days will tell everything. If the four star transfers line up to come to Boulder he can cherry pick the academic problems and still upgrade that program immediately. If that happens, watch out. Jackson State had less than nothing to offer and never will, it's Mississippi's whipping boy. But Colorado has money already and beautiful facilities and a favorable position in an over-rated conference. If he could recruit in Jackson he can recruit anywhere and if he can start hot, get some momentum, with money and good assistant coaches, watch out!

I listened to it all but understood very little of what was said other than, 'I'm comin'. I'm sure it's my hearing problem. He did a great job of speaking off the cuff, not from notes. He was there for one reason...So that these young men could form an initial opinion of their new coach. In a sense, he was being interviewed, evaluated. That's as it should be.

I wish he had done more convincing that he's there as 'one of them' and 'there to work WITH them' and 'ensure their success and that of the program'. If even one of them left the room in fear, doubtful or hesitant...that's not a good thing.

The ensuing days and months will be critical. Best to the coach and team.

@5:50am

Coach Sanders is not "one of them"...he is their coach. Real leaders don't "work with" their subordinates because he's the one with the knowledge and experience, and who is ultimately accountable. Coach Sanders has proven he's a winner and that he's old school which means:

It's my way, or the highway. If you can't hack it, pack it. A lot of those Midwest boys and their parents aren't going to like being yelled at - or being threatened with being kicked off the team for being on their phone.

Great video but the article about transfer difficulties makes me wonder if Coach Prime his due diligence.

Relax Colorado. They are acting like they are Princeton.

"I assume his son is the new QB." December 4, 2022 at 9:38 PM

I'm led to believe the son is not eligible to transfer as dictated by the school regulations regarding transfer credits, academic majors, etc.

Colorado ain't Harvard. I'm sure that attitude is coming from some administrator who is trying to climb the academic ladder towards a presidency. With a 1-11 team, it's easy to claim academics. Prime will be able to get any player he wants. Just wait and see. The school isn't paying him to lose.

Anonymous said...

For those naysayers who say that Prime won't "fit in" in Boulder...it's a left-wing white-guilt paradise. They will fawn over him.

Anonymous said...

For those that worry about the few that will quit after that meeting, because of their feelings, they had already quit. Old school coaching isn't for the faint of heart.

I’m betting the academic standards for student athletes are going to be a little more challenging to the kids he wants to recruit when compared to JSU

Wow said...

It is a really good move. If he can flip Colorado to 9+ win seasons and sneak into a PAC championship, then the big boys will come calling.

If he is successful, perhaps his next stop to the big big boys will be a bottom-tier SEC school like Mississippi or Mississippi State. Or from Colorado, he may jump directly into a top 10 program.

Time will tell.

" All other teams are mercenaries hired by universities, with possibly a sprinkling of student-athletes. The NCAA should abandon the charade, pay players, and quit requiring them to go to class." Agree wholeheartedly. Sports now a days are solely there to make the Alumni happy and to generate more money from the happy Alumni.

"Real leaders don't "work with" their subordinates because he's the one with the knowledge and experience, and who is ultimately accountable."

Bullshit. Obviously, you've never worked in private industry at a management level where, in today's world, it's important to foster the notion of a TEAM, rather than "I'm your boss". Everybody knows the pecking order who the boss is and the chain of command. To repeat it to subordinates is a recipe for disaster.

"Together, men, we are going to rebuild this program!" has got to be the mantra...NOT, "I'm here to tell you boys what's what!"

I'm sorry about your experience.

9:45,

This isn’t private industry in today’s world. This is a sporting competition where the players are trying to out gain their peers to maybe make multi-millions one day. Corporate minions want to eke out an another day doing as little as possible until they can hit the watering hole and then try to out detect the subtleties of bourbon from their peers. I have never seen Saban trying to hard to go-along-to-get-along. He is building men, shaping futures, and letting people who is the boss. He will be remembered and respected by these men for the remainder of their lives. Someone with your “experience” in management with an exaggerated resume will sadly not be remembered by anyone probably.

Anonymous said...

His "old school" brand of enforcement rather than pandering to his players means he will either be highly successful or fall flat on his face. No middle ground. Like Saban get the best athletes and demand respect. Do what the other coaches are afraid to do. He'll win or else...

Anonymous said...

The quitter is going to run off all the quitters. Now, for more important news I saw 3 dogs in someone’s yard this morning.

Anonymous said...

1:04 All coaches are quitters when $omething better comes along and it don't come unless you win. Deion is now in the pipeline, thanks to success at JSU and he will quit Colorado if he wins and something better comes along. He just happens to be human. Gosh!

Anonymous said...

The nice thing about having 'F*** You' money is you don't have to pay attention to the message baord trolls.

Anonymous said...

Second murder in a week just reported on the Jackson State campus. I am pretty sure any credible football players on campus will also be heading west pretty soon. Wouldn’t you?

Anonymous said...

Did the coach ever wear a suit with vest while at JSU? Just asking because it seems like he was always bringing swag with casual attire and lots of jewelry when appearing on these videos at JSU. This is going to be interesting to watch over the next couple of years. I think it depends if he can hire high level assistant coaches who can cover for his lack of coaching experience. Also will be interesting to see what happens to the JSU football program.

You know, Eddie Robinson likely had a bunch of opportunities to jump ship from Grambling. He never took them. He stayed the course for the HBCU and retired with an incredible record and legacy. Unfortunately, those days in the past. Coach Prime likely doesn't need the money, but I am sure he enjoys the attention. Attention that he could have had at JSU. I don't have a dog in this fight, but I would love to see him stay and build a lasting legacy with a program and institution that needs a lasting example and legacy.

Deion is for Deion. Nothing wrong with that. Get on the wagon and ride it to the bank or ride to the unemployment office. If I was a young coach or student athlete, I would take that gamble because if your smart enough you will get things out of it one way or the other that will benefit you in life. It's unique with what he's doing or at least the world thinks it is.

Anonymous said...

Race aside, if he alienates those hundred-fifty boys sitting there staring at him (which could be his game plan), he will be a disaster. The notion of "Listen up, children. I'm the new sheriff in town" won't fly. And maybe that's his intention. I just don't think he's that smart. He thinks of himself as a drill sergeant at a Mississippi reform school. He really has almost zero experience upon which to relay in this arena.

You people need to stop with defending him because he's a black man.

Anonymous said...

Noticed no comments on all the prime posts mentioning the young men he recruited to play for him and players he inherited who are now left with a void even larger than Prime's ego.

Anonymous said...

5:43 "Race Aside"? You are the only person making race the issue in this conversation. He's not hired or leaving because of his race. He never alluded to an issue of race in his speech to the team. WTF Race Aside?

Anonymous said...

College football coaches, the successful ones, are ALL bullshit salesmen. That's the job. Give him a break.

Anonymous said...

Just the Facts ! Nothing about race here! It’s about Daddy Ball with Deion, his kids are going to get special treatment no matter what! Let’s see how that works in the PAC 10! If he is such a great recruiter, he certainly should get players that are better than 3 Star, which is what his kids are at best!

Anonymous said...

I like his message and all, but there is a part of me that thinks all this is showboating for his brand/image. He literally has someone following him around videoing and posting to social media. He's going to take all of the JSU players to Colorado and the others already there aren't going to get any playing time. He talks a good game, but he also talks about himself a whole bunch.

Anonymous said...

11:23...90% of the sucking up is due entirely to the fact that he's a black guy who's rocking a boat. If he were white, we would not even be having this discussion. The job being filled at Colorado would be a non-event. And you know it.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
