Madison-Rankin District Attorney John Bramlett issued the following statement.
Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Bubba Bramlett announced today that Zebulum James, 27, was convicted, after a jury trial, of the murder of Kristy Mitchell.
On November 19, 2015 Ridgeland Police Department was alerted to a shooting at the Logan’s Roadhouse on County Line Road. Upon arrival, they located Kristy Mitchell, 48, who was from Excelsior Springs, Missouri and staying at the Drury Inn on a business trip.
Mrs. Mitchell had been shot in her abdomen by an unknown man driving a blue Mustang. Witnesses stated that the Mustang left the parking lot heading south towards Hinds County via I-55. Officers later received information, from the Jackson Police Department, that they were working multiple crime scenes involving a man driving a blue Mustang. After a joint investigation, it was determined James had shot and killed a woman at a gas station in Hinds
County, shot a JATRAN bus, shot into a house in Jackson, and shot and killed Mitchell all within an hour and half period.
James was located shortly thereafter at his mother’s apartment in Jackson. Authorities also located the blue Mustang as well as the gun that was used in both murders. James went to trial in Madison County Monday asserting an insanity defense. Multiple forensic psychiatrists evaluated James over an extended period of time and testified at trial that he was not insane at the time of the murder. After deliberation, the jury unanimously found him to be guilty of the murder of Mitchell.
District Attorney Bramlett stated “First, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mrs. Mitchell. It is inconceivable that someone here on business could be gunned down by a stranger as they walked through a parking lot for dinner. Why Zebulum James found it necessary to take this innocent woman’s life we will never know. But, what we do know is that he was not crazy. He was not insane. He is a murderer, and he will now spend the rest of his life in prison as a result of that. A special thanks goes out to the many officers with both the Ridgeland and Jackson Police Departments that worked together in order to quickly capture this violent criminal. I also want to thank my investigators at the DA’s Office for the countless hours they spent helping to bring this case to trial. None of this would be possible without the work of law enforcement. We hope this verdict brings some sort of closure to Mrs. Mitchell’s family.”

Fry Baby Fry!
Adios MFer...no blessings in Madison Co. In Hinds Co. he would have received an apology.
My computer screen indicates this is the third day of December in the year 2020. This man will have met his maker in approximately 26 years, 2046. I'll have been dead for a long long time by then.
He’s already been convicted of first degree murder in Hinds...so.
Bring back public hanging.....and start with this worthless scum.
WOW! 5:03 PM That's a prowerful indictment against Hinds County.
The News just said Zebulum "has a mental condition". Is 'Brain Fried on Drugs' a mental condition?
Hope the Judge runs the sentence consecutive to his Hinds sentence
If this POS doesn't get the death penalty and actually gets executed, we need to clean house in the judicial system and the rest of the chain of responsible parties.
@5:03pm - He was also convicted and sentenced to life in Hinds County.
No more expense on this dog. Less than $1 for a high velocity termination.
Serious question here. Does JPD have anything resembling a gang unit?
10:06 they don’t have enough officers to cover patrol shifts. So no they did not have a gang unit
"It is inconceivable that someone here on business could be gunned down by a stranger as they walked through a parking lot for dinner."
Really? Where you been Bubba? Maybe you were still in tenth grade when Nissan was new to the area and the visiting senior engineer from Japan was gunned down in a parking lot, headed to dinner, at his extended stay hotel in Jacktown. Luckily the gentleman did not succumb to his injuries but he'll never forget Jackson, Mississippi.
The only difference here is this lady was murdered thirty yards north of Jackson.
Why five years between murder and trial?
If the guy already had a life sentence for a Hinds county murder why the hell was he on the street instead of a prison cell?
I would venture to say that most murderers are "insane" or have a "mental condition". Sane people think about consequences.
Now the endless appeals process, on our dime, begins. They will first start with his so called mental health issues getting their own experts to say without a doubt he was insane or could not make proper judgement calls. While I did not see it in the release, I hope it was Life with no possibility of parole in both courts, but then again....
"If the guy already had a life sentence for a Hinds county murder why the hell was he on the street instead of a prison cell?" He wasn't on the street, he had to be tried in Hinds County first then in Madison. The crimes (rampage) all occurred at the same time.
Agree with 7:18, as so called inconceivable crimes will and do occur in the Metro area at all places and times. You all stay vigilant and safe.
He'll die in jail, but he was dope and def and fresh and one bad MFer on that night when he popped dat cap!
I'm sure he thinks it was wurf it.
7:43, he killed in Jackson on the very same day he killed in Ridgeland. He went on a rampage. Got life in Hinds now life in Madison. He is mentally ill and repped himself in Hinds.
And his victims remain dead!
I don't understand how someone randomly goes on a shooting and murder spree, but is not considered insane. I don't believe he had any violent criminal history, so if not insanity what was the motivation?
Regardless he should never be released. I just don't understand the pleasure with finding him sane.
Pitty-Pander: It's not that people find pleasure in sanity. It's that society deserves the right to see this toad fried, rather than feed and house him for fifty more years while he gets tattooed and becomes a minister.
Any updates on the guy who first sawed-off the legs beneath P.F. Chang's horse statue, was sent "away", and later returned to 'Renaissance Lifestyle Center', to saw-off the legs beneath the fountain's horses? How's he doin? Is he running-around LOOSE? Or is he "put-up", somewhere?
