Canton Tax Increase?

Uh-oh.  It appears the Canton Public School District is considering a tax increase:

So what have they spent the $33 MILLION on that was approved a couple of years ago?

Anonymous said...

Is this because of the CMU mess and the "tornado insurance"?

Anonymous said...

It got increased last time for buy new ipads and tablets for the students.

It will go to a vote and it will get voted in. We are powerless to stop it.

Why should the tax payers pay for a D rating school district. The tax payers should expect more from the Canton School District. Why would I want to pay for something that is broken. Would you!!! Shame on the Canton School District for allowing this.

This is the result of a corrupt Democratic government who was having it's turn, but ran short of duckets.

and I remember when Canton was a nice place.

lol Duckets?

Doesn't the law requiring publication of the notice of the meeting also require the specific underlined language?

Anonymous said...

@12:23 - $33 MILLION for Ipads and tablets? Right! What about all the new furniture, vehicles, sports equipment, and everything else that had NOTHING to do with educating our kids!!!

Anonymous said...

A million dollar increase is a million dollar increase; but, it does not automatically mean an increase in the mileage rate. The required language of the ad is not clear.

Anonymous said...

Majority of the school districts across the state ask for an ad valorem tax increase as long as they don't reach the 55 mil maximum. Why is Canton being singled out?

Anonymous said...

This is just the Cuty if Canton sticking it to whitey. The houses of real value in the canton school district are white occupied. Increasing the milk age on houses in the city limits won’t hardly have any value. The problem is the City of Canton is in charge of who is on the school board. If the residents of the school district had any input on it, it would be a nice school district. That’s where the change needs to happen for an improvement in school conditions.

Anonymous said...

Sorry. Typed that in a hurry on an iPhone and didn’t check to see the auto corrects.

Anonymous said...

@3:21
And who is on the Canton Public School District Board?
What are those names?

Anonymous said...

The majority of tax paying citizens inside the Canton School District don't go to school in Canton School District.

Anonymous said...

A 2% tax increase for education and people are up in arms. There is a such thing called price inflation!!

Anonymous said...

There is no requirement that the school board hold a public hearing to discuss a funding increase that will result in an increased millage assessment. Not sure why they decided to throw this grenade.

Anonymous said...

Attn 4:24 I am a college MBA graduate, and I have never heard the term "price inflation". I do know that inflation automatically increases tax revenues. Ask your "price inflation" teacher to explain it to you.

Anonymous said...

4:24 I laughed out loud at your comment you clearly don’t understand inflation. A fixed rate tax does keep.... oh never mind. Prob a Democrat who has a great heart but isn’t very sophisticated in either economics or business... these people are a dime a dozen.

Anonymous said...

@ 5:01
Says who? Provide proof of your comment please...
Public notice must be served Anytime there is consideration of a school millage increase.
Go back to sleep!

THE WHISTLE WAS BLOWN ALREADY!! However JIM HOOD, our AG, running for Governor won’t prosecute because he will not get the black vote from Canton. FBI need to get involved, but they are too busy playing politics with President Trump. So to all of you in Lake Caroline sell your house and get out NOW before it’s too late.

The State of Mississippi has some notice requirements and even if there is no intent to raise taxes, the notice must contain that language if spending is rising. Of course, the legislature does not put this burden on themselves. The bulk of the large bond issue was for new school buildings. Actually I think the Canton School District should be dissolved into the MC School District. Taxpayers would save money on Administration expenses and in the long run, the Canton schools would improve.

Anonymous said...

Canton Separate School District will never EVER be dissolved in to the Madison County School district. As much as those of us that actually pay taxes in the Canton Separate School District would love to see it happen it will never EVER happen. The Queen Mother and citizens the the county school district will see to it.

White folks sure screwed the pooch when they formed it to keep from being in the county school district.

@4:00

Here are the board members of the Canton Public School district

Isn’t one of them under an indictment now for voter fraud??
She must be proud.

@7:27pm. I agree! Dissolve the Canton School District.

Anonymous said...

Don’t dissolve it. Just enable all residents of the school district to have some sort of say in who is on the board. That seems pretty fair to me.

Anonymous said...

@8:18 p.m. I agree! It will never EVER happen.

Anonymous said...

Tax them all back to Jackson!

True, the Madison County School District won't absorb the Canton District. But what folks need to realize is that the Canton School District is not restricted to the city's boundaries. It takes up a full 1/3 of Madison County right across the center from the Pearl to the Big Black.

If we could just get the boundaries of the Canton District shrunk down to the current city limits (and make the current city limits the permanent boundary regardless of future annexation by Canton) and then have the Madison County School District absorb the outlying areas of the present Canton School District, the property values in those newly-absorbed areas would go way up.

Once free of the burden of being in the Canton School District, new development would be stimulated in those new areas and the county's revenues would grow. So if it's not possible to absorb the Canton District or to abolish it, it might help to simply shrink its size.

All of these comments are totally irrelevant in the face of the demographics. What we have here is a demographic population and leadership base that is the precise mirror of those running Jackson, Mississippi and Canton Municipal Utilities.

We can chatter all day long about where money went or who wants more money for what purposes. It's a fact that officials with this school system have been embarrassed regarding their athletic facilities for decades. They held their heads down in shame when other schools showed up in Canton to play. So, they spent several million on facilities hoping to compete (in perception) with Madison Central and Ridgeland High. Facilities and vehicles and ipads are more important to them than educating the children. The system is corrupt from top to bottom, nepotism and favoritism is rampant and parents typically could not care less as long as their graduate gets on at Popeyes, Kroger or C-Spire.

I have to agree with several comments on absorbing the CPSD into the MCSD will not be agreed on by the folks in that district. The absorption would diminish the overall score dramatically. I believe it may also require busing of whites into Canton and visa versa. May be wrong but think this is law for student balance. If done it will help private academy enrollment.

The $33M (or whatever the amount was) from a couple of years back was to replace two old schools and build a 9th grade academy. I lobbied for these upgrades. The old schools needed replacing regardless of performance. That said, I will lobby against any tax increase for whatever purpose. Now here's my second point - everyone talks about a school/district performance. When did we quit talking about a student's performance. Where there is no doubt that there is room for improvement in the district, the reason for such a low grade is that many of these kids come from homes where the parent/s just don't give a damn. I think it is high time we started pointing the finger at the homes instead of the schools.

To CPD21 - busing white kids into Canton and busing black kids out. Just might be the most asinine idea I have heard in a long time.

Anonymous said...

@10:36am - I think CPD21 may have been speaking about forced integration, because separate but equal was not handled the way it should have been.

I am no fan of busing kids all over creation for "balance". Its a waste of time and money.

10:34 posted, in part: "...the reason for such a low grade is that many of these kids come from homes where the parent/s just don't give a damn."

Help us understand this. The Canton Separate Municipal School District is centrally located in the middle of Madison County. Why is it that these particular parents don't give a damn? What about the parents whose children are at Canton Academy, Madison Central, Ridgeland High School, Flora, Germantown and remote schools in the Madison County District?

Why is this district suffering the ills of incompetent leadership, parents who don't give a damn and children who have no desire to learn? Is this district some sort of 'island in the sea'? You really need to dig deeper in your analysis.

Anonymous said...

1:05 the board is appointed by officials who are elected by city of canton residents. Virtually no respectable tax paying citizen sends their children to these schools. And you can remove Ridgeland schools from the good ones you listed. That time has passed.

Anonymous said...

1:05. Bingo. You nailed it. The CPSD is an island in the the sea. Those schools you mentioned are all successful. Why? The students are successful. Why? Because the parents give a damn.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone seen any financials for the last few years of CPSD ?
Or annual audits ?
What do these documents show?

It's time for people to atttend this meeting and voice their opposition to this tax increase. A tax increase would also adversely impact blacks--as well as whites-- who struggle to pay their bills as it is. Canton lacks leadership. Do members of the school board even live in the school district? And, how can whites continue to be taxed by this entity when they have no representation on the school board???

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
