Kingfish note: What exactly is the growing season?

Uhh, it's that time of year when plants yield fruits and vegetables which are harvested for consumption.

$18 tomatoes?

Is this a MDAC sponsored farmers market? If so, how much of our tax money is being spent on such a joint effort? Will the vendors be charged for retail space? Jim Buck's back from the grave, this time in drag!

Interesting. It's the old adage "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." Livingston has built quite a farmer's market out at the corner of 463 and 22, so now "Madison the City" is going to try to do the same, I guess.

Hell 3:33, Livingston is using the federal $$$s for theirs; thru that scam that no-vote Landrum put through to get USDA money via N Walters.

If CHS is in fact supporting this in "Madison The City" with our tax dollars, surely the ever vigelent KF will file a PR request to find out how much is being wasted.

But the more important question - does Queen Mary require the market to have brick veneer walls around it and only 'appropriate' signage that is not visible to anyone driving by?

You people in Brandon, Jackson, Clinton and other places just keep doing pushups in your cucumber patch and stay the hell out of Madison, The City. Ain't none-O-your-bidness.

How could you live in an area where agriculture is such a vital part of our economy and ask, "Exactly what is the growing season?" That is why our children believe all food comes from the grocery store. It seems that some of our adults, as well as children, need to be educated.

There is no fee to the vendors, no tax dollars are being spent. The property is owned by the city of Madison. Calm down folks.

As an actual resident of Madison, I'd like to thank whoever established the hours for this farmer's market. Four to eight is IDEAL.

While the Greater Belhaven Farmer's Market was a nice way to interact with the nicest people in the Metro (both customers and vendors), we just have too much going on, early on a Saturday, to make it into the city. Four-to-eight on a Tuesday will be PERFECT.

Well... it will be perfect, unless the damn mosquito trucks spray us while we're trying to shop and mingle. If that happens, we'll NEVER GO BACK.

Then go some place else to 'mingle' 11:39. It's a market, not a place to shuffle around pass out bidness cards.

It will be nice to be able to finally go to a farmers market in Madison. I like the Livingston farmers market and will go there also.

Growing season isn't really "official". It's basically from about March through October or November, and even then, it could depend on the hardiness of the crop and the intensity of the cold during the fall.

well then, here is my two cents...I still go to the original farmers market on West Street...lady peas, sweet corn, okra, purple hulls.. all fresh and oh so good. A hidden plus is that the dummies from the 'guvment don't run it!!!!

Having a harsh winter, a cold, wet spring or a hot,dry summer can greatly affect a crop's production. Realize also that produce availability/growing season varies....blueberries typically from mid May until late July...corn from early part of June until mid October.

8:20 - Most food in Mississippi does come from the grocery store unless you're talking about soybeans, corn, or sweet potatoes.

OMG Keep Calm and Eat Healthy

A farmers market in nothing new to agriculture rich states some are for profit others are just neighbors and friends sharing a bounty. If you go by the market at the top of the hill on Old Canton Road and it is closed you can bet 'growing season" is done!

The 'market at the top of the hill on Old Canton' has abandoned the original purpose of it's former operator (before he died). Now they're more into Mexican Junk-Art, baled straw and assorted flower baskets. Oh, and there's also some produce back under the shed. Still, not a single thing sold there originates within a hundred miles of the place.

Please; Enough with the cutesy little jars of homemade jelly! Farmers don't make jelly.

Anonymous said...

Not sure what kind of farmers you are used to being around, but the ones I know do make jelly.

Original farmers market is the one I go to (by the stadium). Been going there all my life. Just can't beat the food and the folks are incredible.

If by any chance they run out of something I'm looking for (and that's happened maybe twice in 30+years), I'll go to the one on Old Canton. 8:37 pm nailed it though. The gentleman who ran it at the beginning ran a good market. I don't go to a farmers market to get who-has and rinky-dinks.

I like a true farmers market, with fruits and veggies from our farmers.

11:35 AM, I need to get you outside the city and to a farm. Pink eye purple hull peas, a fresh ripe tomato, okra to die for, sweet corn, onions, green tomato, potatoes, peppers, and the list just goes on and on.

11:35 Do you really believe that food grows in the grocery store?? You really need an education!!!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
