Daimler Consortium to Build EV Battery Plant

Governor Tate Reeves released more information about the EV battery plant project in Marshall County.  The Governor issued the following statement:

A joint venture between Accelera by Cummins, the zero-emissions business unit of Cummins Inc., Daimler Trucks & Buses and PACCAR, is locating advanced battery cell production operations in Marshall County. The project represents a corporate investment of at least $1.9 billion and will create 2,000 jobs with an average annual salary of approximately $66,000.
The economic development project represents the largest payroll commitment of any major project in Mississippi history. Additionally, at $1.9 billion, this is the second largest economic development project in state history.
Accelera, Daimler Truck and PACCAR each own 30% of, and jointly control, the joint venture. EVE Energy will serve as the technology partner in the joint venture with 10% ownership. The joint venture aims to accelerate and localize battery cell production and the battery supply chain in the U.S. The company will manufacture battery cells for electric commercial vehicles and industrial applications, creating quality manufacturing jobs in the growing clean technology sector.
The to-be-named joint venture’s 21-gigawatt facility will be located on a portion of the Chickasaw Trails Industrial Park Megasite near Byhalia.
Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority funds will be used to assist with infrastructure needs, site preparation and tax credits.

QUOTES

“I can’t imagine a better way to kick off the new year than with the announcement of the largest payroll commitment and the second largest capital investment in Mississippi’s history. This historic investment by these industry-leading companies will enshrine our state at the forefront of the automotive industry for years to come and create 2,000 good-paying jobs in the process. Today’s announcement further demonstrates to the world that Mississippi is a top destination for business.” – Gov. Tate Reeves
“It’s a win to land one world-class automotive brand, but to land three of the world’s automotive leaders and to secure this $1.9 billion economic development project serves as a remarkable testament to the power of collaboration and the state’s commitment to bringing family-sustaining, high-tech careers to the people of Mississippi. MDA thanks Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Trucks & Buses and PACCAR for choosing Marshall County as the location of this new battery cell production facility, and we look forward to the positive economic impacts it will have on the region and the world-changing technology it will create that will shape the future of mobility and industrial processes.” – MDA Executive Director Bill Cork
“Marshall County, Mississippi, is thrilled to welcome Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Trucks & Buses and PACCAR to our great state. Marshall County is committed to economic development and appreciates the partnership of the Mississippi Development Authority and the state of Mississippi on this great project. This project will provide quality career opportunities for our residents for decades to come.” – Keith Taylor, President, Marshall County Board of Supervisors

Of course, Mississippi Today couldn't help itself as it published an article focusing on the Chinese company that will own 10% of the project.  The online newspaper opens the story with an accusation of hypocrisy:

In 2023, Gov. Tate Reeves decried Chinese technology as “an existential threat” and signed bills limiting what business the state of Mississippi could do with China.

In a special session today, he’s asking Mississippi lawmakers to send millions in state taxpayer funds to a Chinese technology company to close an economic development deal.

A China-based technology company is one of four companies that will partner — pending legislative approval of a state incentive package proposed by Reeves — to construct a $1.9 billion Mississippi plant to make an electric battery to power commercial trucks.

before reporting Eve is only 10% invested in the project:

Bill Cork, Reeves’ appointed director of the Mississippi Development Authority, confirmed to members of the Mississippi House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday that three major commercial vehicle companies will each own 30% shares of the company, while the Chinese company, which will provide the technology to manufacture the battery for the commercial vehicles, will own 10%. Article.

However, Eve appears to be a mainstream company as its products are sold through major American corporations such as Apple, Best Buy, and Home Depot.

Obviously EV’s and their batteries are an evolving concept (see autos and ICE, circa 1890 -1930). I’m neither pro nor con, but see the products evolving into a larger market segment as efficiency improves (think my Gateway 21 inch flatscreen that weighed a ton and cost 2k in 2k) but not replacing ICE. Frankly, we need to wind, solar, electric, fossils in a market based economy that will sort out which source has what slice (I know, I know, we have gov’t meddling and subsidies and and and).

I’ll let others debate the politics, but I do appreciate the attempt to localize the manufacturing as opposed to allowing China to maintain the monopoly. For many reasons we need to get off their teat before Chinese internal politics start eroding their perceived stability.

Mississippi Today is pathetic.

The WSJ posted an article about the plant about 20 minutes ago. There is some great purely technical and financial points and info in the comments section that have nothing to do with the plant's location, who owns it, or who may or may not benefit from it being built in MS or anywhere else.

I think the link will change when the story moves from its current position on the WSJ main page. To search for it if it does, the current lede is "The Multibillion-Dollar Bet That Truckers Will Ditch Diesel for Electricity" and the author is Bob Tita

So a 10% Chinese investment in "the largest economic development in Mississippi history" [sic, Tate] is a nothingburger [sic any Trump]? How about a Chinese company owning 10% of the land in your county?

Anonymous said...

@ Bill Dees

A 10% Chinese investment in a battery manufacturer and a Chinese company owning 10% of the land in a county - kinda totally not the same thing.

I read about all those people in Chicago stranded in their EVs this past week when they failed to work, or hold a charge. I think I'll just sit back and keep driving my gasoline-powered vehicle while all the early adopters do all the suffering.

Anonymous said...

5:52 PM China and other investors already own the majority of the land in most counties in Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

@Bill Dees - where does he say it's the largest economic development project in state history? We reading the same thing? He says it's the largest payroll commitment and second largest economic development project (for capital investment).

Chinese will own Marshall county and start nail salons and massage parlors

Pretty soon they will have a schitty wok

I want an electric monster truck with monster mud tires that will keep me going down rutted out gravel roads because when "they" finally kill the internal combustion engine and petroleum in general there will be NO asphalt to pave the roads.

But conveniently nobody ever thinks about or mentions that!

Next up, Bill Dees will discuss the political parallel between China producing 80% of what we consume and owning 10% of a product produced in America.

Mississippi Today is said to have the scoop on a story revealing the batteries will be manufactured in Marshall County, shipped to China and from there, loaded into containers bound for the USA and other locations.

Meanwhile: I vote YEA to letting the post at 7:39 slide into the dung heap.

Sure is strange this was in the works but was announced right after inauguration. By the way why a special session when The Legislature is already in session?

@9:02pm Exactly. One should read about the "Kulaks" of Russia a hundred years ago. It's the exact same thing the global oligarchs have been planning and are currently trying to carry out against the American citizenry. If successful, they will eliminate any "rural" independent citizens and communities, and concentrate everyone in to "smart" cities that can be controlled - via electricity.

I’m surprised that China would have anything to do with the State of Mississippi, due to the lawsuit filed against them by our Attorney General Lynn Fitch back in 2020 over COVID-19

@7:13
Once Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg have perfect Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) they will have no need for the rural and suburban types. Simple as.

All of these plans have been in the open for a century. You are just repeatedly told it is a hoax. Or that talking about it is “hate” speech.

The $349 million is only part of the corporate welfare handout. The Legislature passed $489 million in bonds to finance the project and gave breaks on sales taxes and use taxes during construction and a year after construction. Also, NO corporate taxes for 10 years.

This from the man that doesn't want to expand welfare.

Is this another Beef plant scandal, Some of the more recent EV bankruptcies, Biden backed Proterra(electric bus maker) filed for Chapter 11, Britishvolt - Bankruptcy, Volta - Bankruptcy, Blackstsone Technology - Bankruptcy, Alelion Energy Systems-bankruptcy, Lordstown Motors - Bankruptcy, Enerdel, Inc. -Bankruptcy, Are we throwing good money after bad. I don't care if you want to drive an electric car, I don't want to have to subsidize your $100,000 automobile while I'm doing good to pay for an older sedan.

You never know what some people are thinking. I suppose the trucking related companies involved in this see the battery operated trucks as unavoidably. With their international connections, they are in the Davos loop.

The mafia dons of Davos are all in on the climate change shakedown. Robbing various treasuries around the globe by having, as in the case of the U.S., the Green New Deal. The subsidizing of the unproven renewable energy sector, is the latest treasury draining scheme.

The Chinese see their part in this venture as a way around the tariffs that Trump imposed, and Biden has continued. The money coming in on the tariffs are too good to turn down.

There may be a ray of sunshine peaking through, Ford is slowing up the production of their battery powered pickup.

@7:48 AM: Lynn Fitch, perhaps the worst AG in Mississippi history, still hasn't figured out how to serve China with the summons and complaint. She filed the lawsuit more than 3 years ago, and STILL doesn't know how to serve the papers on China!! She must be brainless.

Bad idea.

https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-ev-sales-prices-problem-transportation-2024-1

"The trickle-down effects of this decreased demand are everywhere. EVs accumulated at dealerships this fall, even as automakers cut prices to try to entice customers. Automakers have backtracked on their promised investments: Ford delayed $12 billion of its planned $50 billion investment in EV manufacturing capacity, while General Motors delayed production of key EV models and scrapped a $5 billion partnership with Honda to make cheaper EVs. Even Tesla — once the superstar of EVs — announced it would delay a planned factory in Mexico. Auto execs who were once trumpeting the potential of electric cars are even publicly acknowledging that EVs aren't working.

Industry analysts have pointed to several reasons for the slowdown, including insufficient charging infrastructure and a lack of affordable EV options. But they're a symptom of the larger problem: America's EV plan was flawed from the start."

So, after the last four posts - how much are Tate Reeves and Trey Lamar getting in campaign contributions for forcing this boondoggle through?

Anonymous said...

Tate is about to get PAID!

Anonymous said...

@3:46
Nobody has to prove a negative. You have to prove there is corruption if you make the claim.

Anonymous said...

I’m no fan of Tate’s far right politics, but this is actually a very smart play for Mississippi.

The joint venture with the three largest truck manufacturers in the world means less risk for
The state because we aren’t just picking one “winner ” with whom to partner. And our state won’t be dependent
On a huge increase in market share for this EV manufacturer to work.

This is a much smarter deal than the states that jumped in with Ford or Rivian or other startups in this sector early!

Anonymous said...

@9:29am And the alleged corruption hasn't been proven to be false.

The public proposition that Reeves and Lamar are chiseling, corrupt politicians (and nothing more) must make you a bit nervous...perhaps you're feeling like the guilty dog that barks the loudest because you know something?

Mississippi has a well-known, long history of public corruption from its root to the fruit, so any alleged corruption by ANY publicly elected official in the State of Mississippi is fair game... especially when Mississippi's very own Attorney General is in on the flim flam of it all, and looks the other way.

I thought we were done with GOP Governors riding about in golf carts with China loving Bill Clinton and giving Chinese businessmen tax breaks AND Visas for "investment?" Guess Tater loves Chinese money as much as Xiden. BTW, what about those "Chinese landowners" you bi...ched about Tater?

Two Faced Tater.

And, RWNJs, you do know that both Gates and Zuckerberg OWN farms. Gates owns 17,000 acres in Mississippi. And Zuck is raising his Wagyu beef on his own ranch in Hawaii, with a macadamia nut orchard to supplement their chow. They ARE the farmowners, despite propaganda billboards about Miss. "family" farmers. What a corporate lie.

So, yeah, they have bought up the farm land with Billy Bob Big Bux III of Mississippi's help and do plan on using illegal aliens and AI/GPS guided equipment to eliminate the small farmer. And send them to the big city.

Been happening for 150 years. Globalism and the Davos Set planning on genocide of the middle class. Blacks are just now figuring out who is replacing them in the work force but continue to vote for Good Ole Uncle Bennie, the richest Miss. Member of Congress.

There is NO difference between the GOP and Dems except in love of trannies, pronouns, and antitheism. They both LOVE money, not God, though.

Where did you think the 9 Trillion dollars in COVID relief money went? To the TRILLIONAIRES. Ka Ching.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
