Ag Commish Andrew Gipson issued the following statement.
The 164th Mississippi State Fair is in the books, and I am proud to report the 2023 State Fair was a success. The 11-day fair is the state's largest agriculture event with an economic impact of nearly $50 million annually. Fairgoers from across the state enjoyed new attractions such as the Mississippi State Fair Idol competition and Taste of Dixie National Rodeo along with many traditional favorites like the Biscuit Booth, livestock shows, and of course, the fair food.Fair attendance and revenue were up this year, despite a couple days of much-needed rain that had less attendance. Considering we have one less fair day than prior to 2022, we are very pleased with the increased attendance that was driven in part by higher concert attendance. We drew large lunch crowds during the weekdays. We estimate the total fair attendance, which accounts for non-paid admissions, to be nearly 526,000.
We accomplished our goal of hosting a safe State Fair. For the second year, we implemented the new stringent security model that included policies such as a youth curfew to ensure a peaceful, family-friendly, fun and secure Mississippi State Fair for fairgoers. There were no major incidents to report. Any issues that arose were handled by law enforcement quickly. We could not have accomplished this without the support of multiple state, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies. I want to personally thank all of our law enforcement partners: Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi State Capitol Police, Department of Homeland Security, State Fire Marshal’s Office, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Mississippi Agriculture and Livestock Theft Bureau, Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Police Department, Pearl Police Department, Florence Police Department and private security officers.I also want to thank the Director of the Mississippi State Fairgrounds Michael Lasseter and the staff at the Fairgrounds for their dedicated effort to make this the best Mississippi State Fair. I hope to see everyone October 3-13, 2024, for the 165th Mississippi State Fair.
Note: Fair attendance was 518,576 in 2022.

I took my wife to the fair again this year. We had a nice time. What we found very disappointing was there there were less than 5 vendors selling the turkey legs and they were all charging $20. I saw one BBQ vendor from a nearby state who advertised turkey legs. I stood online to order one and when I got to the window she said they AG Commissioner told them that they aren’t allowed to sell Turkey Legs. Only a select few are allowed to sell them and they all marked them up to $20 each.
I would really like to see Commissioner Gipson explain this predatory and anti-competitive behavior!
We went. Well done Andy

🤣 Haha, if that's your chief complaint, the fair must have been great.
I bet Mr. Turkey leg is a lot of fun at parties
The only reason a conservative is ever anti-capitalism is when he has a personal vested interest in a monopoly.
Someone needs to investigate the fair for price fixing and corruption!
I did not attend, disposable income is not at all time high for me now.
But I am very happy that it was successful.
Good for them!
@ 4:05 - Investigate? Over what? A damned turkey leg?
Toodlum, from the hood, would not be allowed to roll his grill down High Street, throught the gate and sell cheese-burgers either.
We went to senior citizens day. Briefly saw/heard Andy singing in the coliseum for the health fair part of it and fled to the midway. Yikes!
Prices were outrageous for everything and many fewer rides compared to my childhood memories. No 4-H animals or anything in the livestock barns because, apparently, the livestock is there only for the first few days and we missed it.
Saw limited forestry, cotton, and honey agricultural displays. Wondered why no marijuana crop farm displays. LOL.
Actually, it was pretty lame. Admission and onsite parking was free. We don't care about performers so I doubt we'll go again.
@4:05 - You sir are just downright racist. Your comment is something that a Chokwe supporter would say.

This made me think that 'Stamps' should open a food stand at the fair, if they haven't already. It's a very good burger sold out of a small place located in Washington Addition on Dalton St.
Looks like I'll run with #TurkeyGate as the lead story on my show tomorrow morning. Seems legit
Good Lord.
Some cheapskate gets pissed off about the price of a damn turkey leg
...and then proceeds to rant about an entire state fair.
Go to the free biscuit tent if you can't afford a turkey leg.
Definitely the next Guv!
No incidents. Good Job.
I'm with Mr. Turkey leg. There is another anti-competitive issue no one really talks about. There is a Mississippi based business that can't sell his product in Mississippi. It is the deer corn vending machine, Corn Express. The Ag Commissioner and Ag Dept use some obscure weight rule for selling grains. The reason being something about having to have certified scales on each one, for deer corn....not food consumption or agriculture commerce, deer corn. He is allowed to sell them in other states, but it has pretty much put him out of business in his own state. The real reason is the co-ops and feed stores are a major contributor to his campaign and raised hell about the corn vending machines taking their profits, when in reality, people used the vending machines after hours or on Sundays when the co-ops and feed stores aren't open, but hey, we are for Mississippi, right Andy?
@7:58 Are you talking about the law where people that sell by weight have to have a scale that accurately measures weight? That applies to everyone in the state and even gas pumps. Last time I checked a certified scale was under $150 on Amazon.
The fair was great this year. Kids had a blast. I know Andy Gipson must be disappointed though, as he was only able to work seven pictures of himself in a cowboy hat into the nine page fair guide.
Its 2023 and a state fair makes the news 5 times a day ...
its like going back in time here.
cowboy Andy can count his cut of the turkey legs and work on his singing ... dear lord
The turkey leg lobbyist must have got to him
I miss the pickled baby with 2 heads
BS Andy. Show us the numbers. You can “estimate” those figures all day. How convenient that the big rise in attendance was from the ones you can’t track. It’s should be a gigantic rise in attendance considering it was while Ole Miss and State both had an off week at the same time, many schools were out for a whole week for fall break for the first time and the weather was great. It should be near double last years you would think. Right?
G.
Hey great job Andy and gang kept fair safe and a good time had by all. This will encourage people to attend something else in Jackson. This is how you do it Chok people will come to your city if they feel like it will be safe and incident free not entering the Hunger games just to get some taffy.
It’s not just Turkey Legs but also alcohol. Several of the vendors are equipped to sell booze because other states let them. Not here though. They all say Andy won’t let them. He makes sure that only a handful sell alcohol and probably takes a cut of that too! Where’s Shad?
Oh yeah he’s got a podunkville clerk who lost $1500 to bust!
My turkey leg was $17. I must have gotten it before the mark-up.
I love going to the fair. Thanks to all who make it happen.
