Former Jackson Municipal Airport Authority CEO Carl Newman passed away. The cause of death was myelofibrosis. Mr. Newman was 68 years old.
Mr. Newman was a great guy and probably the best CEO the airport ever had. He was well-respected by his peers and Jackson was fortunate to have him. However the same can't be said in return as Carl Newman deserved better than Jackson and the crap dished out by the cronies of Bennie and Chokwe.
Rest in peace, my friend, rest in peace. Posted below is his obituary.
Carl worked for the City of Phoenix for over 34 years. He began his tenure with the City as a police recruit. He joined the aviation department in 1980 as an Operations Administrative Assistant. He held many roles in the Aviation Department, eventually becoming the Assistant Aviation Director. After retiring from the City of Phoenix in 2012, Carl and Jeanette relocated to Houston, Texas where he accepted the position as General Manager for the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. He would remain in Houston until another career opportunity in Jackson, Mississippi was offered to him as CEO of the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority. Carl was not one to sit idle. Upon his return to Phoenix in 2019, he accepted the position of Aviation Director for the Glendale Municipal Airport in Glendale, Arizona. He remained in this position until his health would no longer permit him to work. During his illustrious career, Carl received many accolades and served as a mentor to many. Some of his major accomplishments include serving as the first African American to chair the American Association of Airport Executives Executive Committee. He was also appointed to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council by President Barack Obama in 2017. Out of all of Carl’s accomplishments he was most proud of his children and grandchildren. Carl was an avid sports fan. He loved football, baseball, racing and coaching. Carl’s passion was aviation. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying his Piper Archer II every chance he got. Carl passed peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2023, surrounded by family and loved ones. He is now resting in the arms of Jesus. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Conley and Minnola and his sister Debra.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Jeannette Newman, Phoenix, AZ; his children, Aundrea Newman, Chandler, AZ; Jason (Lynda) Newman; Jennifer Newman, Taylor (Eric) Newman all of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren, Carlyn Faye, Miranda Jean, Conley Mychal, and Giana Sophia; -three siblings, Vernon (Lesia) Newman, Winnola (Randolph) Thompson, Phoenix, AZ, and Bobby (Tammy) Newman of Tucson, AZ; one Aunt, Katherine Baker of North Hills, CA; nephews, nieces, and host of cousins; other relatives and friends. Carl was greatly loved. He will be dearly missed, and not soon forgotten. He made his mark on many lives.

Carl Newman had integrity. The half-Mayor Antard can't even spell the word.
Interesting swipe at Bennie and Chock. I wonder if Carl continued to allow that 'up front', free parking space where Bennie used to park his antique Chevy truck.
That's an impressive resume, and he didn't have to take junkets to Paris to do a fantastic job. RIP.
Carl tried.
Carl lived a couple of doors down and he and Jeanette were wonderful neighbors. He did his best to work with the self-serving clowns on the commission but I think the Paris junket was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
He left when Henley got the board to hire a consultant to micromanage him. He was against Henley's pet projects such as quarter million dollar bathrooms at Hawkins Fields or Paris trips. One time Henley and Lawanda Harris wanted to illegally split up a large federal grant among a. bunch of subcontractors contrary to the grant guidelines, they pretty much told him to shut up even though the attorneys told them they couldn't' do it. It didn't happen but that is the crap he dealt with.
We had lunch a week after he quit. He said he had never seen an airport board meddle as. much as JMAA's did.
KF, thanks for sharing. Jackson did what they always do - chase out the highly qualified, HONEST, and conscientious professionals.
Wake up people!
Carl was all of that was said here and more. He was truly a class act. Very intuitive , slow to anger and methodical. Missing from his obituary was a stint in Miami FL. RIP my friend.
KF, your post at 946 is very telling. They have been advertising for a GC for a while now. I'm guessing some are willing to apply, but most are not wanting to have to deal with the board.
The biggest mistake he ever made was relocating to Jackson, MS
You pretty much have to be 150% DBE to do business with JMAA and none of the people they are looking to hire have the qualifications to do a lot of the work, they don't have the insurance required, or employees that will pass security clearance to work around an airport, and most don't have the bonding capacity for the work, so JMAA just doesn't get it done. I've read the RFP's and seen the requirements.
If he was 'against the Paris trip', why did he board that plane?
8:41, the commission voted to send themselves AND five staffers to the Paris Air Show for 12 days even though the show only lasts 7 days. Estimated travel costs were $50,000. Mr. Newman tendered his resignation the next day.
This is a great loss. Mr. Newman was the best leader I’ve ever had the privilege to work for.
