Why, as reported in the article, does poverty have anything to do with Jackson’s nation leading murder rate? I can assure you all cities listed have similar poverty rates. One direct effect of the Jackson crime rate is the massive real estate growth in west Ridgeland and Madison. I have lived in Madison for 20 years and I only remember one murder. It was a Jackson state professor murdered by some JSU students. The abduction and murder of the child from Kroger in Jackson happened in unincorporatedMadison county.

There are many reasons for the murder rate in Jackson. Certainly the Mayor and his administration have decimated the police department, also Hinds Counties judicial system, which has been on the decline for years shares blame. The current state of affairs in Jackson and similar cities can be traced back to the 1960’s when LBJ and congress first implemented welfare programs that incentivized fatherless homes that began the breakdown in the family structure. Over the decades too many children born to mothers who were children themselves, led to the decline in public education and other social institutions.
Again, the current problems are decades in the making and will take years to begin to improve. Without leadership from the minority community nothing will change. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be that leadership on a local or national level, only calls for more social programs which will only exacerbate the current problems.

There are plenty of jobs available for any reasonable person in Jackson that wants a job. No, if they are convicted criminals some of those positions may not be as quickly offered, but even for those individuals if they were serious felonies there are opportunities.

Its not poverty. Look at the other cities listed, and the areas where their homicides are occuring. We can beat them in that statistic as well, if you want to brag about another of yourn failings.

7:34--I get what you are saying but it isn't the majority of voters, but rather the majority of people who voted. For example, Mayor Lumumba was elected wit 69.3% of the vote. That would be amazing except that he only received 13,210 votes out of 19,051 cast. There are 175,000 citizens in Jackson. I have no idea how many are registered to vote but have no idea how a leader is elected with such a pitifully small number.

The 99 per 100k number is based on the 2020 census which said there were 154,000 people in Jackson. But that was done in the middle of 2020. Jackson has been losing 2000 people per year for the last deacade.

Extrapolating from that the present population of Jackson is 151,000, so the homicide rate for 2021 is 153 / 151,000 or 101 per 100k.

Jackson could have the best police chief in the world with a fully manned patrol division and it wouldn’t matter. Policies like stop and frisk or zero tolerance won’t do the trick either, not until there is a jail that will house not only felons but misdemeanors as well.
