"Check Ball"

Once upon a time, an NBA rookie trashed MJ a year or two after he retired.  Something about he could easily beat MJ one on one.  Soon afterwards,  MJ showed up at the Bulls practice and simply said "check ball."  Watch the rest. Start at 2:50 in first video.

Raw footage.

I often wonder what makes grown men worship other men who play children's ball games.

What is the deal with Michael Jordan? You old timers act like he was the greatest ever-not even close! I’ve watched plenty of YouTube videos and it’s clear that during the MJ era the competition wasn’t close to what it is now. A young MJ today would be a good NBA player, maybe even great but certainly not the greatest ever lol

7:03, agree. It's much more mature to post anonymous crap on the internet criticizing other grown men.

Whatever. Give him the rules today favoring offense and three points shots and he'd still rule. Oh, and he was better on defense.

MJ developed into a leader....and made everyone around him on his team elevate their game. Very few do this today.

And they didn't have to deal with the Michael Jordan defenses a la Detroit.

As for today, it's almost impossible to defend a perfect fallaway jumper.

This post makes me want to buy a copy of Space Jam on Blu-ray.

@7:03 AM is just mad because nobody invited him to a Super Bowl party. I doubt he ever gets invited to any parties. I know his type.

8:47 am You really don't "get it" anymore than Benjamin did. You clearly don't know MJ and never met him or his family or Dean Smith.
MJ would be just as much a star now because he outworked and out studied and out prepared everybody else. He also made his teammates better players. He has little tolerance for those who don't try to do their best. He wasn't out partying or hanging out with losers away from the court. He didn't need " an entourage" of worshipers. He was, instead, among other things, finishing his degree and learning how to manage his fortune better.
There were bigger guys born with more natural ability then and now, but who are not as smart or driven to succeed. MJ is MJ in every part of his life. He wasn't ever going to squander away his opportunities or rest on his laurels. He wasn't ever going to live a life or have a career that disappointed his father, mother or Dean Smith...all of whom excelled at whatever they did too for the same reasons.
He hasn't changed.
The NBA is a bunch of Pistol Petes with few teams. And, apparently, you can't see the difference.

Takes me to this: LeBron attempted to make a speech about Kobe and LeBron failed miserably. LeBron is just another opportunist and his speech lacked emotion and to me he is jealous of Kobe. He only passes the ball to get assist numbers up. He’s great, but never as good as MJ was. Kobe was great too. They’re all great at basketball, but what would they be without it for a platform. I’ve watched them all play, not just on YouTube. MJ was the best I’ve seen and would not have accepted the opportunity to speak about Kobe to remind everyone he was also 18 when he was drafted. And, I am a friggin expert. Anonymous Out!

Agreed with Kingfish on this one. He definitely was able to get everyone to elevate their game, and with the triangle offense it sure was fun to watch. Talk about somebody driven that cannot stand losing. That game against the Jazz when he had food poisoning was unbelievable.

The rookie sort of looked like he misunderstood MJ and thought he said, "Chopper, Sic balls!"

That look like sumpin bad finna happen 2 me.

Respect those who brung you to the dance.

MJ was the best. I watched him in New Orleans with UNC in National championship game. Amazing athlete.

When somebody has 7 straight seasons like Jordan had with the Bulls (and takes a break to play baseball on top), then we can have this argument. He was simply the best ever.

Kingfish said...

I think someone one time said Jordan didn't shoot threes. So Jordan hit like 7 or 8 in a row, then taunted the guy about not shooting three's.

KF, I remember it well. But, I also remember him hitting shots from beyond the 3 point line while at UNC when there wasn't a line drawn. He hit more than a few from damn near half court.
He also made spectacular assists even as a freshman and unlike, so many college and NBA " shooters" these days, didn't miss free throws. Missing a free throw is inexcusable. It's just a matter of practicing until your muscle/body memory is ingrained. Anthony Cole just hit 100% of his against BC after being hurt and that was because shooting free throws was all he could do for months. And, you can always use the square around the basket. I want to scream," aim at the center of the top line" rather than risk a " swish".
The legendary Bones McKinney once hit 18 out of 20 free throws tipsy and blindfolded on a bet. My Dad won a lot of money that night.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
