JPD issued the following statement.
Jackson Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident involving a
police officer. It occurred at the intersection Briarwood Drive and
Interstate 55 West Frontage Road.
Shortly before 6:00pm,
an on-duty officer was traveling on Briarwood Drive when a second
vehicle collided with the officer. The suspect vehicle, which was
believed to have ran the traffic light, left the scene following the
collision and was observed traveling
to a nearby business.
The driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old black male, was later
taken into custody and arrested for several traffic violations, as well
as leaving the scene of an accident.
The officer was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries but none appear to be life-threatening.

People running red lights has become a big problem. This isn't the "it was yellow when I entered the intersection!".....this is "F that red light, I'm not stopping!!!" I am glad the officer is ok, but I also hope that this will wake up JPD to what is becoming a serious problem.
That's certainly an odd traffic signal if you are traveling west on Briarwood and going to turn left onto the West Frontage Rd., as from red, the light initially turns solid green over the turn lane before later giving you a green left arrow. It's been that way for several years.
Now what's really maddening is when the power goes out to a street light anywhere in the Metro area. I'd bet that more than 90% of the motorists just zoom through the intersection as if the light didn't exist. If you do the right thing and STOP you'll get rear ended. It's mayhem.
I'm trying to get my head around this one. Someone runs a red light, hits a police car hard enough to at least knock the bumper off (according to the picture above), then leaves the scene of the accident? When they leave the scense, however, they only "flee" to a local, but unidentified, business according the the CL, where the car is quickly identified and the suspect arrested. I mean, if you're going to leave this scense of an accident, especially one involving a police car, anyone with an ounce of brains hightails it as far away as possible and hides out for a while. Was this guy just that stupid, was he drunk/high, or maybe both?!
Yes, I know how to spell scene even if I only got it right 1 out of 3 times above. I see the double "the" now too. Sheesh! Long day.
10:14 Imagine that, another screwed up intersection controlled and programmed by MDot. All the D+ engineering students now designing and programming our traffic flows.
