Secretary of State Gibbit Hosemann issued the following statement.

Two Madison attorneys are trying to stop their neighbors from having their annual Christmas light display.  Eddy and Cecile Edwards  asked the Madison County Chancellor to issue an injunction against the Richardson family on Sundial Road in Madison and declare the display to be a nuisance.Mr. Edwards is an attorney at Phelps Dunbar while Mrs. Edwards is a Professor at Mississippi College School of Law.

Carlos the Clown lost again.  A Chancellor awarded a $28,846 judgement against attorney Carlos Moore's firm, the Moore Law Office, after it failed to honor an assignment of part of a BP lawsuit settlement that was awarded to his client.

If one is going to keep an eye on the politicians, it's a good idea to stick around when they decide to go into executive session.  The real fun usually takes place after the executive session - when most of the audience has left.  The Madison County Board of Supervisors are no exception to using this old trick as they proved last week.

Update: Shooting suspect, Sheroderick Elmore has been located and is now in custody for Aggravated Assault in the shooting that occurred on William McKinley Circle.

The Jackson Zoo needs volunteers for cleanup tomorrow morning.  This Saturday (November 11th, 8 to 10 am) is the Zoo's last landscaping day of this year, as many get into holiday activities in December. We will be focusing on the last of the autumn clean up, such as removing invasive plants, raking, and pruning.Yes, you can bring your own tools and gloves.   The volunteer gates will be open from about 8 to 8:15 am, after which all our landscapers will be sent throughout the park with tasks, and the gates will be closed.  This is a good service project for youths as well.

The Clinton Police Department arrested a suspected carjacker last night. A victim was carjacked in Clinton Wednesday evening after his car was rear-ended by the suspect's vehicle. JPD assisted in the arrest. Police are still looking for two additional suspects.

A Madison County grand jury indicted David Watkins for embezzlement on October 24.  Attorney General Jim Hood issued the following statement:

Madison County deputies busted a dog-fighting ring on Monday.  Photos obtained by this website show the savage scene that greeted the deputies when they arrived.   Sheriff Randy Tucker's statement is posted below the photos.

The city of Jackson issued the following press release.

A Madison County grand jury indicted attorney Sharon Plunkett last month for allegedly embezzling from her law firm, Young Wells Williams, P.A. Earlier post.  However, the indictment is merely one front in a war between the Flora attorney and her former law firm.  Mrs. Plunkett sued for an accounting and discovery in Hinds County Chancery Court in September after the firm allegedly refused to allow her to review the financial records of her practice. 

There has been quite a bit of sick news stories such as dog fighting rings, stabbings, and child molestors reported over the last few days.  Take a break from the news and enjoy this video JJ unearthed on Youtube.  A young Luciano presents Nessum Dorma as only he can.

There will be a runoff for Hinds County Attorney.  Gerald Mumford and Malcolm Harrison advanced to the next round after they survived elimination in the primary today.  Roughly three hundred votes separated the two candidates.  Incumbent Martin Perkins only received seven percent of the vote with 748 votes.  Mr. Harrison led with 47% (4,861 votes) while Mr. Mumford had 45% (4,595 votes) of the vote.  The margin between the two was 261 votes.  The total number of votes cast was 10,229. 

The Madison Police Department issued the following statement.

It appears Jackson will lose another luxury car dealership to Ridgeland.  The Ritchie Group plans on moving its dealership at 5320 I-55N in Jackson to a site on I-55N Frontage Road in Ridgeland next to Patty Peck Honda.  Ritchie sells Jaguar, Audi, Range Rover, and Volkswagen vehicles.  The city of Ridgeland is working with the Ritchie Group to issue $2.3 million in TIF bonds to fund infrastructure improvements for the project.

If you live in Hinds County, get out and vote for County Attorney.  The candidates are Gerald Mumford, Martin Perkins, and Malcolm Harrison.

A Madison County grand jury indicted Madison County attorney Sharon Plunkett for embezzlement and mail fraud last month.  The indictments accuse her of embezzling from her law firm, Young Wells Williams, P.A.  Mrs. Plunkett no longer appears on the firm's website.

The Hinds County Sheriff's Department purchased sixty body cameras and a server in 2015 yet they are nowhere to be found among the deputies.

The University of Mississippi Wellness Center announced today that it will close the "Wellness Center" on Highway 51 in Madison but don't worry, it is seeking to relocate to another site in Madison.  UMMC sent this email to its "Wellness Center" members today:

Suppose the Mississippi Department of Revenue does indeed charge internet sales taxes and starts collecting the revenue.  Does DOR keep all of that money? If so, what happens to the local governments who have seen their tax revenue vanish thanks to the internet? Does this mean cities and counties are suffer twice? Once from this monumental shift in the economy and once again when the state refuses to share the sales tax revenue.  Something to think about if the Department of Revenue has its way. 

Get ready to pay sales tax on those Christmas presents you purchase online. The Department of Revenue will being charging sales tax for internet sales even if the retailer has no presence in Mississippi.   DOR submitted a notice of a new rule to the Secretary of State yesterday.  The new rule will go into effect on December 1. The notice states:

Hinds County Court Judge William Skinner denied bond at preliminary hearings held last month for the two men accused of killing Chelsie Kirschten  and ordered that they be bound over to the grand jury.

A crime victim is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the recovery of his truck and arrest of the thieves who stole the truck and credit card. Info is posted below.

Posted below is the Memorandum of Understanding for the "Third Way" for Jackson Public Schools.  Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba presented it to the City Council last night.  The council approved it on a vote of 6-0.  The Mayor also said that Governor Phil Bryant will announce the members of the Commission overseeing the "Third Way" tomorrow. 

A jury awarded $218,000 to Michael Wiggington, Jr. yesterday after he was denied tenure by Ole Miss.  Wiggington was an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice for six years.  His application for tenure was denied by the university.  He sued Ole Miss in U.S. District Court.  Judge Neal Biggers presided over the case.

Patient safety at Jackson-area hospitals improved from a year ago.  The healthcare watchdog organization Leapfrog Group grades hospitals on patient safety and issues a report each year.  Leapfrog studies factors such as infection rates,  mistakes, errors, and accidents to determine the score.  Only eight states had "F" rated hospitals and of course, Mississippi was one of them.
