The container ship, Dali, destroyed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last night.
It appears the ship lost power at least twice before is slammed into the structure. Two people have been rescued but there are believed to be between 7 and 20 people in the water. The Governor said at a press conference this morning, the crew had notified authorities of a power outage. A Mayday stopped more cars from coming onto the bridge.
The video has been edited and speeded up.
Here is the longer, unedited video of the collision.

Prayers for everyone affected by the horrific accident. I don't understand why the ship wasn't accompanied by tugboats or have a functioning automatic backup power and/or steering system.
I wonder who made it first to the accident scene.
The rescuers, or the lawyers?
I am actually right down the road from this bridge currently, right off 695, my ship is in Curtis Bay for repairs and got the message early this morning that our departure will be delayed because of the bridge collapse. Should be interesting to see what they’re going to do with recovery and opening the channel back up, there’s no other way in/out of Baltimore Harbor for ships.
One can assume a steering or thruster casualty and you’re not going to stop a ship that big in time. Ships usually have EDG’s or EGT’s for emergency power if you lose your generators.

I believe the ship made it there first. Like traveling 1st class on an airliner. They get to the crash right behind the pilots.
Reports are that it was a Singapore cargo ship that lost power just before it approached the bridge and without navigational power veered into the bridge footing. The power loss suggests accident but we will see.
Too soon, @9:03
9:03 isn’t wrong. Lawyers be lickin they chops over this one.
EVERY accident is the result of someone else's negligence. I learned that watching local TV
Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan and Morgan.
and Morgan.
@9:03 AM - You "bridged" the gap between serious news and gallows humor.
I crossed that bridge twice a day back when I worked in that area ten years ago. Truth be told it was dilapidated and in need of updating or replacing. Silver lining I guess.
Not to worry: Buttigieg is on it!
9:41 does that port have pilots that take control of the ship coming in like river pilots coming into New Orleans? That would be interesting to know. Pilots vs foreign captains navigating into port on their own.
From what I've read, local pilot.
Excellent technical discussion by an expert.

Just a few more consequences than the collapse of the Wilkinson County Jackson Point Bridge.

Yes he is, as is the President. Politics does not matter in times of disaster. Getting it handled as quickly as possible is what counts.
They have the local Baltimore Port Pilots come onboard. That’s usually standard procedure for inbound/outbound ships and there has to be at least one English speaker onboard the crew coming into the U.S.
After watching Biden & Buttigig on the news, it is a real shame the same sense of urgency is not exhibited in regards to the southern border.
This is just a horrible nightmare. I cannot imagine what the victims went through and the families who lost loved ones.
So tragic.
This is the route for most big rigs through the city because part of I-95 through Baltimore has tunnels which they can't use.
I visualize it taking at least two years to replace the bridge, maybe much longer.
But wait, Biden and his butt boy are on this so all is good.
If only the (not my) corrupt president would put the same urgency on the open border where dozens of known and unknown terrorists pass weekly, but they are all potential dem voters.
The mayor of blue city Baltimore has asked CNN (his people) to stop showing video footage of the collapse.
The footage should be replaced with reruns of "The Wire" 24/7.
I Buy Scrap!
On Another Note I hope No Porpoises or Sea Turtles Were Injured! No Need Involving the Animal Rights Folks in this...
1:41 Just ask the residents of East Palestine, right?
Disaster in a blue area and Biden is all over it.
Disaster in a red area (East Palestine) and Biden says
"screw you."
Biden said that "we will move heaven and earth" to rebuild the bridge, and won't spend a penny on a border wall to keep out terrorists and future dem voters.
in 2002, a large section of the I-40 bridge at Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, collapsed into the Arkansas River after two drifting barges slammed into supports. 14 people died. The State of Oklahoma and the feds "moved heaven and earth" and the bridge was re-opened to traffic in 65 days. Properly motivated, even the shittiest level of government can accomplish big things in a short period of time.
Doubt this was an accident.
Trust is a fragile thing.
"Properly motivated, even the shittiest level of government can accomplish big things in a short period of time."
I think what happens is the emergency overrides concerns about stepping on other people's toes, and the people who can actually get stuff done get called in to do it.
Kinda like the Jackson water crisis 18 months ago, when the capital city went without water for a month.
Here's a bonus for the "capital" v. "capitol" jackass:

9:12 You are 100% correct and the true MS men stepped up and faced these families in person. Mr. Lampton was one of the finest Christian God fearing men people could ever meet. Prayer to these construction workers families whose fathers, sons & brothers did not come home to their earthly family that night. These are just everyday people in middle income families, I am guessing trying to feed their families. These are not high paying jobs like highway workers with traffic not slowing down & obeying signs posted. Let us all drive a little slower to respect these workers. God bless all who were their on that tragic night & in the days ahead!
Being Baltimore, that initial $80 million promised by Biden will grease a lot of palms. It will be like Jackson on steroids. No doubt that Baltimore has their equivalent to Socrates, right?
