Sheriff Bailey Speaks Up

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.

Deputies of this department are sworn to protect and serve the public and uphold all federal and state laws. We have approximately 230 men and women with this department who report to work every day and perform their duties in accordance with department standards. Based on today’s arrests, five former deputies violated all such standards, their training, and my expectations of them. The badge worn by so many has been tarnished by the criminal acts of these few individuals.

Based on the facts in their guilty pleas, all former deputies lied to me the night of the incident. We have cooperated fully with all outside investigative agencies to uncover the truth and bring justice to the victims. We have also sought assistance from outside agencies and consultants to help us with repairing the trust within our community.

I truly have tried my best to make the Rankin County Sheriff's Office one of the top departments in Mississippi. This incident and the crimes of these individuals has been devastating not only to the victims but also to the sheriff’s office and the hundreds of men and women that work here. Ultimately, I believe we all want a safe place to live and raise our family. We all also want to have faith and trust in those who wear the sheriff’s badge. You have my sincere promise that I along with every employee at the sheriff's office will work nonstop to obtain these goals.

You’re the leader that did not instill modern day policing. Instead, you quietly pushed 1960’s policing. There is some much more than this. I will never vote for you again. You were their leader and failed.

Go home and take the leadership with you.

It starts and ends with you! You are culpable and obviously in denial! You are you top brass need to be removed ( DOJ probably will) . You took the paycheck you take responsibility!

Bailey didn't write this. His attorney mouthpiece wrote it for him.

Did Bailey discard his Goon Squad challenge coin?

In Bailey's defense, I would issue a written statement (that he absolutely did not write himself) instead of making another public statement. He could not have looked worse in the first presser.

That said, Sheriff Bailey needs to provide some details to his constituents about what he knew and, more importantly, when. Why was there even a culture where these officers believed such activity could take place. The text messages alone indicate their actions were just a typical night at the office.

I doubt we'll ever get these answers from Sheriff Bailey because he knew full well what these officers were doing. This incident exposed "the goons." It went too far, he couldn't cover it up and he was forced to make a public statement about it (albeit 6 months later). Now he was lied to (which I do not believe for 1 second)?

Don't believe that all "the goons" are now off the street. At least now, hopefully, they will calm down a little.

I'll be waiting to hear more from the good Sheriff (or his trusty sidekick).

I was always under the impression the Captain went down with the ship. Seems as the Sheriff threw thesis Deputies to the dogs and acts like he knew nothing. BS

Bailey must resign.

He was either complicit or clueless. Either way, he catastrophically failed as a leader.

Anonymous said...

That scene reminds me of the pawn shop scene in Pulp Fiction.

NO, the R.C.S.O. is NOT that pure and innocent and oh so sweet group of guys that is described here. The jail leadership is so corrupt. The road deputies are bullies. It's just that these deputies got over confident and got caught.
And remember, the current sheriff was hand picked by J.B. Torrence.
Sure, there are times that the Sheriff's office has their "atta boy" moments, but that does not mean the S.O. is as described above.
Oh yeah, that shaved head muscle man that says playing golf is how he works out that literally pushes children out of his way.....you too.

By the way, no, I have no ill will against the S.O., I just know some things.

I think you are 100% correct in everything you said, to your point about "6 months later" there was a reason for that!!

Anonymous said...

How can they repair trust with the community when they never had any trust to begin with?

Anonymous said...

Well, I guess I'm the non-tin soldier that doesn't fall in line, but at this point I'm not calling for Bailey to resign.

Why? I'm person enouogh to admit that I don't know enough about the facts to say whether Bailey is implicit in this ridiculous action or not. I don't blame the leader for every action that occurs by an underling unless and until I know what the person knew - or should have known - about the actions. (The CEO of a bank should not resign because some teller was kiting friends checks, or the County Clerk resign because the employee at the counter was skimming cash off the top.)

But the ridiculous statement at 5:45 of 'six families lives were ruined' because of Bailey's leadership shows nothing but absolute blame game. Those six families had their lives ruined because members of those families were bad folks - not because of the leadership they were given or not given.

If Bailey is found to be complicit, then I expect his resignation will be the smallest part of his penalty. And those doing the investigation are in a much better position to make that determination than any anynonymous individual with a keyboard.

Anonymous said...

I doubt these Baily bashers have ever managed any employees much less the number he has. Yes, he's the Sheriff but being all places at all times is an unrealistic expectation.
Also, you people that want this new modern day policing, just move across the river.

I have my problems with some of Bailey's actions, such as his refusal to sign ATF forms for citizens. But, his good points far outweighs his shortcomings and unless all of you are willing to take the blame for something you did not do, shut up.

I sleep very well at night here in Rankin County because of our LEO, unlike citizens in thousands of other counties across this country. Now, let's apologize with our checkbook to the victims and move ahead.

Those officers arrested people of color for years and they are now going to be in prison with people of color. Why do you think is going to happen to them once word gets out they committed hate crimes???? Going to be a few Epstein’s I do believe.
This leadership failed them all. Bryan go home and get down on your knees and pray for forgiveness like you constantly preach on social media…..

After Rodney King, George Floyd, ...... (add the names of numerous prior victims), law enforcement departments continue to believe it's just a few bad apples. May be more involved.

It is very obvious that you are turning your back on those who have worked for you. After all, if you continue to support your “employees” , you will lose your job. F**k them.. They will do fine, maybe and hopefully with a lot better leadership.

Who do ya'll think asked (ordered) McAlpin to "handle" the house on Conerly Street? It all started with Bailey

Anonymous said...

@6:29
You are so far off the mark.
You need to educate yourself about the dynamic between a Sheriff and his sworn Deputies.
It’s a lot different than the dynamics between the CEO of a bank and a teller.

His deputies are very different from the sheriff’s office workers too.
These were regular “cops” like JPD.
Same with Sheriff Jones and his sworn deputies.

Anonymous said...

Had this not been kept quiet until after qualifying deadline he would have an opponent and lost in August!

Anonymous said...

I just dont believe a word he saying, why wait 6 months on an internal S.O. investigation when he was at the scene?? Very telling.

Anonymous said...

@6:29 you are ridiculous. CEO of a bank/ employee skimming money? Really. Did you read the indictment from the feds? They assaulted the men with a dildo; made them crap their pants; shot the gun in the mouth; let him bleed out while they spoke about planting evidence ; collecting bullet casings; trying to burn the victims soiled clothes…Jesus. Do you honestly believe this is the first time they went on “missions” to hurt people? No this was the first time they got caught. And the top leader needs to be held accountable- resign. You knew what your deputies were doing- you coward

Anonymous said...

6:29 well said, however I’d like to hear from the other people that were falsely accused and harmed in other instances by the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department. When there is smoke there is a real fire!

They will be coming out of the woodwork!

Anonymous said...

@6:29 comparing Bailey overseeing this incident to the CEO of a bank overseeing a teller kiting checks is the worst comparison I've ever heard. McAlpin worked directly under Bailey. McAlpin called Dedmon and told him to handle the guys at Conerly. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out. You think McAlpin just decided on his own to "handle" the guys at Conerly one Tuesday night in January? Give me a break.

Who refused to plead guilty to something they did not do and based on these “decorated officers” testimony are now sitting in prison for decades. At least these plaintiffs are getting paid for their abuse… what about the others?

Bailey actually said in his press conference that the deputies involved robbed him of his reputation. Because it’s all about you Bryan Bailey. Never mind the victims robbed of thier constitutional rights. Never mind the citizens being robbed of thier faith in law enforcement. He says he didn’t know about what his deputies were doing yet most of them had a reputation for being brutal. They didn’t just decide to plan a home invasion and torture two men on that night. They had obviously done it before without concern of repercussions because there is already proof of a prior incident involving at least three of them. Don’t act like you didn’t know your deputies were crossing the line sheriff. You can stay in office at your own risk but it sounds like the feds are closing on you and your staff. Stay tuned.

I’ve personally had my life and career ruined by the crooked runt sheriff and a crooked judge who took his own life. I’m delighted at the prospect of Bryan Bailey spending the rest of his career as a rent-a-cop on a golf cart in some remote location reflecting on his decisions.

I expect to read all about this on the front pages of the WSJ and NYT. Both newspapers have been printing stories about Mississippi LEOs and sheriffs' crimes this year. Once again, our state is humiliated by this kind of inexcusable behavior.

Prayers for the victims and their families.

A little too much over-emotional pearl-clutching, frothing at the mouth, lynch mob mentality in these comments. Smells like racial activists, grifters, hustlers and those just butt-hurt that they, themselves, had to face justice in Rankin county are posing as Rankin county residents hoping they can drum up some of that sweet media exposure and the money that follows it. Unfortunately, people have grown wise of this duplicitous strategy.

Sorry guys, track records of hate-filled lynch mobs rarely prove out (after the hustlers and activists leave). As an actual Rankin resident, everyone I know is going about their day expecting that justice will be served as it should be. We aren’t so naive to believe that perfection is the only measure of policing and realize this only comes up in particular circumstances.

Who knows, maybe one of those who pled guilty will use the Sheriff as a bargaining chip for a few less years. It only takes one bird to sing and if any of those were my clients (I'm not an attorney), I tell them sing like a song bird to get less time. The story leaves the impression that one or two people have not pled yet and their indictment may still be pending. Sheriff even accidentally mentioned that..... Wonder if that is the song bird? If I were a betting man, I would give the Sheriff 90 days before indictment. You know feds want him gone if there is any ounce of connection.

6:22 AM, great points. The minorities I know very personally that have moved from

Lumumba’s “for second straight year, Jackson’s homicide rate ranks highest in U.S. among major cities,”

are much more concerned about not getting car jacked, not being killed by a stray bullet, not having their children grow up failing in schools, not having to drink unsafe water, etc., etc., etc., than they are of Rankin County Sherriff’s Deputies.

Not sure what part of “their job is to arrest and book - not to prosecute and sentence” these likely room temp IQ PIGS did not understand, but they do not represent Rankin County.

Living in Rankin County is exponentially better than living in Jackson.

Nope it’s just you.
Bryan Bailey is a phony Christian and a douchebag.
He’s let his deputies abuse people of all races and trample on every civil right you can imagine.
He’s had crooked Rankin judges help cover up his deputy’s dirty work.
Just look at the checkered history of Rankin’s judges.
One even blew his brains out back in 2015.
This is a long time coming.

State law provides a path for a Board of Supervisors to remove a sheriff and hold an election. It rarely comes up because sheriffs are usually more popular than supervisors and such action is rarely needed anyway. But it can be done.

Anonymous said...

We NEED more 1960's policing. Criminals are not scared of getting caught anymore.

Anonymous said...

There is still that pesky $400 million civil suit pending. My guess is that they reach a confidential settlement of $60 million, with the lawyers taking $20 million and each plaintiff getting $20 million. A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with that kind of money.

Anonymous said...

@7:35 am, you are dead wrong. The Board of Supervisors has NO authority to remove a county elected official from office. The authority to remove a county elected official is vested solely in the Office of the Governor and only after all requirements of Miss. Code Ann. Section 25-5-1, et seq., have been met.

Either Bailey knew what the goon squad was doing, which makes him complicit, or he didn't know, which makes him incompetent to hire and manage staff. Either way, he and his entire SO are tainted, and he should resign. We need a sheriff that is both competent and trustworthy, which appears to exclude Bailey.

That said, this whole ordeal is indicative of the extreme levels of corruption that permeate both state and local government.

WOW! Most of these comments are surprising! How about waiting to see how the investigation turns out, because you KNOW good and damn well they're investigating the sheriff. These comments are like the social contagion comments coming from the political left about, well, pick a topic. No facts, just vitriol and name calling.

I don't know if the sheriff is guilty of anything or not, but neither do y'all. However, considering the guilty parties just plead YESTERDAY, it seems to me it'd be worth giving the legal process more than 15 minutes to look into things.

The ones claiming "there's no way Bailey didn't know," are likely to be the same ones who have NO idea what their kids are up to....and they live in the same house!

I'm not saying Bailey isn't guilty. Hell, he may have TOLD the Goon Squad to do what they did. The flip side of the coin is that, those kneejerking for him to RESIGN, have zero idea what he did or didn't do either.

I suggest the pitchfork mob take a breath and let this thing sort out. If some investigators were able to discover that the 6 guilty parties did what they did, chances are, they'll determine if Bailey knew or was otherwise involved. If he was/is involved, then appropriate action should be taken.....but there's no way to know for sure until an investigation is completed.

Tough to believe the Sheriff didn’t hear about any of this. I’ve heard plenty of stories about his officers over the years and I’m inclined to believe every single one of them is true. 758 - you go ahead and "organize a write-in" for this election - it will be a good exercise for you in twiddling your thumbs.

Write in votes are not counted in any election unless the candidates' names on the ballot have either withdrawn or died.

Best I can tell, Bailey might feel like he wants to die at the moment, but it doesn't appear that he has done so.

And for those calling on the Governor to act, buckle up your shoes and get to work. The onus is on the voters of Rankin, not the Governor, if you want him removed. You can start gathering signatures on a petition asking for a removal, and if and when you get the 30% of the voters signatures, you can then prepare for a removal election.

Then and only then can the Governor remove an elected official, and that is if you succeed in getting a majority of the registered voters to turn out and vote, and a majority of those voting want him removed. Not an easy bar to jump.

The best hope you folks in Stankin Rankin have is that Bailey will take it upon himself to resign, or that the feds continue sniffing into the operations of RCSO and find what many seem to think (and what this instance sure suggests) exists.

Of course the sheriff knew what was going on. He isn't that dumb. It is just like everything political. Just don't tell everyone what you are planning on doing and we will be alright. The longer Bryan Bailey takes to resign, the more he destroys the reputation of the RCSO, Rankin County, and the entire State of Mississippi.

He needs to hold a press conference and acknowledge that HE FAILED IN HIS DUTY and that he TAKES FULL RESPONSIBILITY for this crisis and will remain available to assist the sheriff who is appointed to replace him (from outside of the RCSO) but that he is resigning effective immediately!

Here's the problem.
Rankin County is so full of racist assholes that every racist voter is going to protest-vote for him. They will make a big deal about how many votes he got. Why? Because the majority of white "Christians" in Rankin County probably condone this behavior. Just look at the vitriolic comments they post here.

Bryan Bailey won't resign. He doesn't care if he drags Rankin County, Mississippi through the mud, It's all about his ego.

"Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
