Hops & Habanas announced yesterday on Facebook that it will close at the end of the year :
Trayce and I opened Hops and Habanas On Feb 1, 2009 in Madison. A truly new retail concept at the time which proved to be successful. We opened the Fondren location in 2014 and created a Jackson destination spot.We have truly enjoyed growing our business concept which has been modeled by others throughout the state. We have certainly had our fun, enjoyed serving our customers and developed many, many lasting friendships. We made the decision that we wanted to retire from the retail business last fall. Since then we have been in discussions with multiple parties over the following months concerning the sale of the business or building. We did not find a party to continue the business and subsequently have sold the property.December is our last month that we will be providing full retail sales. It is difficult to be stepping away from a business we have put so much time and energy in over the past 12 years and has become beloved by so many. But without getting into details, there is just other things we would like to do more at this point in our lives. So come see us while the doors are still open. We are putting price tags on fixtures for sale, and equipment and remaining inventory will go on sale after Christmas. We wish you all a Happy Holiday Season!Rick and Trayce Miles

The market for small businesses is pretty much nonexistent right now. If they could have hung on for another six months until people feel safe going out maybe they could have sold it to someone with the passion to continue it. I hope they got a decent price for the property, but I can't imagine it would have been a better market in June.
And the great purge of Fondren businesses continues...what's next?
It would've been great if the City had given Hops and Habanas full bar designation. They had to apply for exception year after year, although the bar next door did not.
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others
Damn. A craft beer and fancy smoke shop shutting down in the Hip area of "The Fondren". Who would have thunk it. My skinny jeans shutter at the thought.
(satirical post from the Jacksonites on the closing of the cupcake shop)
I thought the self taxing Belhaven tax bill was going to be good for small businesses.
They always had a great craft beer selection. This is sad.
1:58, yes they did. But now, so do so many other outlets.
Literally selling poison to sheeple should never be profitable. Good riddance.
Small business will continue to take a hit in 2020 and recovery in 2021 will be slow at best. Most are in so deep there will be no return. Families, savings account, 401's, loans will all take a serious hit financially.
According to all the so called experts look for the following changes going forward.
Fast food: some old and most new locations will be takeout only. Inside dinning will be very small if any at all. Taco Bell for example already has a new building concept that cuts sq ft in half with half the employees and half the operational cost, drive thru only.
Businesses with multiple locations will shrink to half current number.
Fast casual and casual dinning will expand carryout, pickup, delivery and reduced sit down dinning while expanding outside dinning.
Delivery will expand in all segments grocery, general merchandise, restaurants, and most of retail. Stores like apparel will move from traditional store locations, brick & mortar to a more warehouse type building as delivery will expand and returns will be easier. Why pay high rent and ops cost when people has stopped coming to the stores and may not return after vaccine.
UBER & LYFT with grow dramatically as they expand package delivery nationwide.
One more from the I can't believe it file.
Towns & Cities are starting to face a budget issue not expected. Neighborhoods are starting to request paving help for their streets. With trucks from Amazon, UPS, FedEx, USPS and others delivering multiple time a day streets that are a basic layer of asphalt are taking a beating. Delivery has a cost for everyone looks like.
Pity...Pity...Pity...what is Bo Bounds going to do now that he won't be able to wear his smoking jacket to that store.
Since we're on the subject of cigars and such...Guess the bald-headed dweeb will have to find another platform of sunshine to pump...since mittittippi tate lost the Egg Bowl once again.
Ohhh and the Lane train? It be rollin' dontcha know. Maklyn Pounders decommited from those lowly poops this week and he could be Oxpatch bound this week.
Still can't believe we left 9 points in the red zone and off the scoreboeard by passing up those field goals. Oh well, the poopers never led in the game anyway.
Just wait till the new parking meters start going into Fondren business district. The S will really hit the fan.
Looks like, the Chinese are indirectly destroying this country by NOT keeping the Wuhan Virus within it's boarders.
I'm talking about people & business.
Biden will normalize relations again within months & appoint his son Hunter to run the affair.
C'mon @1:49pm, you know all of those Fondren yuppies listen to Dr. Dobbs' press conferences and watch CNN all day so are scared out of their minds of the 'Vid
Doesn’t surprise me. You can get craft beer anywhere now. The Country Squire in the Quarter is a x1000000 better tobacco shop than Hops.
I went into this place once, they put a limit on my purchase and it was the last time.
I would love to shop locally, but the online cigar retailer Big Boys, like Corona Cigar Co., have such an amazing selection, incredible prices, and free shipping. I do not see how local cigar shops are going to survive in the modern retail environment. Cigar bars in upscale areas in larger cities, yes (when COVID finally ends).
Also, it is not really "Habanas" when they aren't Cuban. I guess Hops N' Dominicans doesn't have the same ring to it.
The answer to Maceys question is “taxes.”
She asked how local business can survive...internet sales have to be taxed to the point that local businesses can survive.
She may not like paying taxes on her fine cigars but that’s the answer.
That’s what we were looking for in a cigar bar, a bunch of smug, millennial leftists sitting around talking about their hopes for the covid vaccine
Good spot for a pot shop
Great current Fondren business moving to that location. It will be a huge upgrade with what they have planned for that space.
Never heard of it. Maybe someone would be interested in using the place to sell Singer Sewing Machines or Hoover Vacuum Cleaners. Next.
Fondren Guitar is moving there.
4:54 - Thanks for the online sources!! Finally got some useable info from the comments section.
I was in there yesterday. Lady told me sales were better this year than last and that the closing was NOT Covid related. The owners want to retire and enjoy life. Fondren Guitars is moving in.
@ Macy Hanson, agreed, but then again, I like to examine humidity conditions in the humidor, mail order makes me not wanna drop too much cash on one buy
"Literally selling poison to sheeple should never be profitable. Good riddance."
Amen to that.
Patrick Harkins will grow his already profitable business when he moves to that location. FG is one of the few places in the neighborhood that is a destination for customers and he’s done a great job in the 10 or so years he’s been there. Patrick is a great guy, a great business owner and a good citizen.
Patrick May be all of the above, but he is an asshole when it comes to parking, but try and tell any of his budding Eddie Vedders, or their moms(Ssssshhhhhaaaarrrrrooooonnnn in my Ozzy voice) and there will be some excuse. You can’t hardly park close to him without him pitching a fit.
More small and local businesses failing... years of sweat and hard work and a virus shuts the little guys down.... sad.
1:16- yeah, imagine that. A business owner wanting his customers to have a place to park when they come to buy something from him. Sounds like you are the failed Eddie Vedder, Bro. Too bad the only think you play with is yourself! Ha!
Closing a bakery and a cigar bar/craft beer store.
Maybe Mississippi is getting healthy.
So many of these little Fondren-Pecker-Heads actually believe they're hard-timin' in on the streets of New Orleans.
@9:35: I use Corona Cigar Co. because they keep their entire (impressive) inventory under ideal temperature and humidity settings. Further, the boxes are sealed and packed with Boveda pouches. They also tend to offer discounts on holidays. They offered 14.92% off on Columbus Day, for example. I strongly recommend a box of the Arturo Fuente Hemingway line in the "natural" (Cameroon) wrapper. Best cigars for the money out there.
Non-paid advertisement now over.
